d thinking he probably just picked up someone on the way home and picking up the slack for dirk

he wouldn't know until next morning what had happened, and he doesn't understand why dirk keeps apologizing when clearly he's the one who forced himself on dirk

Notice how error is the one who initiates physical contact and not fresh.. he's respecting error's boundaries... And that's making error feel comfortable enough to touch him..
