For some reason, a lot of people in the #actuallyautistic community have begun to say that autism isn’t a disorder/disability. This is untrue.

Autism is clinically known as ASD. You see at the end of the acronym is a ‘d’ this stands for ‘disorder’.

Now, YOU don’t have to consider yourself disabled by your autism, but the fact remains that autism itself is a disability, and it DOES disable many individuals.

This kind of thinking is often rooted in aspie supremacy and other kinds of ableism. Many of us have been taught that having a disorder/disability is bad or shameful, which is why some people revolt against it. But the truth is, there’s nothing wrong with being disabled.

If you feel threatened by having a disorder, it’s time to work on your internalized ableism, not demedicalize a developmental disability.
