Really really really enjoyed the new book New book spoilers!! Big Jim Believes Spoilers but I'm psycho-analyzing Grampa because that's my favorite thing to do.
I don't know how other people are feeling about it but I am personally DEEPLY relieved that we didn't get a fully happy ending in this new book specifically in regards to Grampa, and I really love the route that was taken instead.
Silly as it is, Grampa's origin story is pretty grounded, especially when other origins range from "orphaned by a car accident and falsely imprisoned" to "kicked out of cub scouts by the guy we kicked out of cub scouts so we're gonna kill his child". Having his original source of insecurity be the teasing/bullying of his name is a perfectly logical way to implement that control=happiness mindset that leads into the "but I wasn't happy" loop of his entire life. Teasing about a name is such a mundane issue that most adults wouldn't do much to stop it, and though his parents were book-described "well meaning," they were the ones that named him and didn't see a problem with it, so they probably weren't much help either.
A little kid's first dream being to run away is concerning no matter what, and though the action is depicted as just as selfish as ever, it didn't seem like Grampa had any actual support group or foundation in his childhood home. At least it didn't seem like he had anyone who he was able to be vulnerable with. You don't need a super traumatic childhood to turn out closed off, sometimes it's the little things that does it. Even if he ever chose to change his name legally, the mindset would still be too far in his head.
I also really enjoy his own self-destructiveness. By constantly having his head in the future rather than the present, always on the hunt for bigger goals and more control, Grampa fails to ever fully see what was already there for him and leaves before anything has any time to settle. Afraid to feel anything bad so he runs, not knowing that happiness is slow growing and a late bloomer.. Serial abandoner, serial idiot, world's most impatient man. Not even Grace was special in that front, she was just one in a laundry list of abandonments.
This is even shown in the books! In Begins, he wants the cake and is denied, made to be upset for a nonsensical reason. Then in Believes he is given the chance to enjoy a cupcake and passes it up for the sake of proving a point, a reason so petty it ends ups being just as nonsensical, and suffers irreversibly as a result. Grampa's goal is a whole cake to himself, an object too big for one person and meant to be divided, so he ignores the cupcake, the thing that is smaller but available in the present moment, entirely whole but still made in a batch for everyone to have an equal piece. To want control to this extent is to remove the option of community.
The biggest thing I enjoyed was that Big Jim Believes followed the outline of a redemption arc up until the very very end. The previous book paved in some Grampa heroics, and even though it wasn't on pace with the actual themes of the book and was mainly used for comedic effect it was still heroics. And with the constant talk of bad/good luck and believing changing perspectives an everything I really thought that there was going to be a redemption. Even if it was only a change that still didn't change his kneejerk grumpy personality, I was worried he'd end up turning good, in simple terms.
And I'm so happy that he didn't.
Grampa's "I don't believe it" is one of the most genuine things he's ever done in the books. It's the honest and deep truth. And not only is it a highlight of the tragedy of Grampa's life, it is the acknowledgement of his own failures due to his mindset and the self-awareness that he isn't aware enough to change. It is NOT redemption, in fact it is the refusal to redeem. It feels very natural; how many older people are out there feeling like they are out of time to change, so they just don't and self-fulfill the prophecy?
The path that was taken validates Grampa's life, makes him feel like a complex 3D character, but does NOT forgive him for his many many choices/mistakes and recognizes that he would never apologize for them anyway. He is still an awful terrible person, he's just easier to pity now.
I also find it very . . . interesting that he was made to be stuck as a chibi. Baseline questions of (Does this change his lifespan? Is he younger or just smaller now? How does being cute and small affect any complications with age and/or does it just remove them? How does alien technology affect this bipedal anthro cat? And btw I'm STILL not over the fact that dogs and fish are seemingly the only true animals in Dogman world but they still have their own languages and higher thinking equal to or higher than other anthro animals but they're still legally owned property and every other animal is a citizen who can probably vote and-) aside, I would be amiss if I DIDN"T notice this pattern of orange cats becoming their inner child in order to deal with trauma/general issues. It's weird that it's happened twice. We are now two for two on tiny orange cat sidekicks with no recognizable fingers, just nubs for hands.
It was already an interesting if odd dynamic of Big Jim being this younger set of fresh eyes, both made far too naive and far too wise from his optimism, placed next to Grampa's set-in-his-ways jealous destruction. It's another thing entirely to imply Jim's gonna be attempting to reparent this old fart both in the psycho-analysis way and literally. Acting as a form of actual support and foundation that Grampa seemingly never had whether it was his own fault or not. And with the bittersweet knowledge that he probably won't ever fully accept it, he really is too conditioned into this mindset, but that doesn't mean there's no point in trying.
From just the snippet of the next book that's already vaguely out it seems like this is the last time we'll be really focusing on Grampa for a while, and if this is the send-off we're getting I'm more than satisfied, because there were SO MANY ways that it could've gone really really wrong. Another win for Dav I guess.
Let's hope for everyone that that's all of the thoughts I had about Grampa bc I'm not sure how much more I have in me to ramble.
Very excited to see Clarence and Genie again and following the chosen one arc, see you in a year lmao
