Richard Burke, an aide to Teddy for ten years, saw David on many occasions. Although he was only two years older, something disturbed him. “I was troubled by Bobby and David, who were close to my age,” he said. “Both seemed out of control. David, especially, impressed me as being only vaguely associated with reality, and he often bore the brunt of his mother’s distress. I mentioned my concerns to the Senator, who shared them,” Burke furthered. “He knew they needed fatherly guidance, a strong hand to compliment Ethel’s own…but he had his own family and career to manage, and handling eleven of his brother’s children was too much for any man, even a Kennedy…He knew there was going to be trouble regardless of what he did. It was like waiting for a storm to blow in; there was nothing to do but take cover.”
It was evident David needed far more urgent attention, but the family appeared at a loss as to how to help or what form that help should take. Ted and Ethel sat down with him hoping to find the key to unlock him from his struggles. “What do we have to do, David?” Ted asked him in an almost pleading tone. “What is that you need from us? Because we don’t know what to do. You tell me and I’ll do it, David. Just tell me.” “I want you to bring back my dad, how about that?” David said angrily. “How about that, Uncle Teddy. Can you do that?” His mother and uncle just looked at each sadly and as Ted shook his head, David stood up, “I didn’t think so,” and left the room.
While stoic in public, the emotional impact on David’s immediate family was privately taking its toll. “I toss and turn all night thinking what would Bobby do?” Ted said, in a candid moment to an aide. “…And I swear to Christ, I don’t have a clue what Bobby would do. And I think, Jesus Christ, if Bobby were alive, none of this would be happening.”“Look, don’t beat yourself up over this thing,” the aide replied. “You’re doing what you can.” “But I promised I would I would be there for these kids,” Ted said in obvious distress. “I promised Ethie. I feel like I’m letting her down.”

Not to be dramatic, weird, and unprompted😂 but I’ve also found the full tape of this Christmas so uneasy. An uncomfortable but very insightful watch. Particularly the way Ethel and Teddy interact and the implications in the context of Ted’s relationship with Jackie, and what was hers with Bobby. This is opening up a whole other can of worms that dates back to pre-Camelot, but when I first started learning about the Kennedys I was waiting for *someone* to say the word incestuous. Sure enough it came quickly thanks to Inga. Haha. That whisper, and why it persists to this day, is one of the reasons I remain so fascinated by this family. So many excerpts, interactions, and footage are just waiting to be examined if you see the Kennedy-echo-chamber-emotional… instability?; affairs?; incest?; neglect? (You tell me!) of it all. Everyone was a damn mess! And many a time rightfully—or understandably—so. Often we’re humanized in the most unflattering circumstances

In 1973 Richard Nixon was President, the Watergate scandal was on fire, with Trial of the Watergate burglars and the Senate Watergate Committee. In July, Alexander Butterfield revealed that Nixon, the paranoid man he is had recorded tapes all over the white house, shaking the whole country to its core. Also, on October 20th, Nixon ordered for Watergate Special prosecutor Archibald Cox to be fired, leading to resignations of Attorney General Elliot Richardson, Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelhaus who all refused Nixon’s order.

What was ted and Bobby’s relationship like , in the last years of Bobby’s life affer 1963. I think it was incredibly myopic for Bobby to try and become president, especially so soon afer Jack’s death, I think this shows like how optimistic he was, and especially for the Kennedy family. Although apparently ted didn’t want Bobby to run. Then the light just fully disappeared afer Bobby died. I think ted was concerned about Bobby getting assassinated during his presidency. Then stunned when it happened during campaigning. Some Kennedy men don’t really have knack for thinking things through. Which is a reason why ted Just gave up fot 1980 election. His life had done a huge circle turn, from joe jr to now him alone.
ted and bobby were very close, especially after bobby entered the senate. it was sort of a role reversal from the dynamic they'd had their entire lives because suddenly ted was the more experienced brother and he got to take on a different role of helping out bobby. they'd constantly be going into each others offices and called each other "eddie" and "robby". their relationship was always just more affectionate than that of the older siblings. bobby would also go visit teddy when ted was in the hospital with a broken back and he'd bring cookies and just stay by his side to talk :(
ted didn't want bobby to run. he was concerned about his safety and also just thought the '72 election would be better politically but supported him nonetheless because that's what kennedys do. ted really always had a tendency to self sabotage and that escalated extremely after bobby died. he never really let himself have a good thing going for him
