I learned to play on my mom’s Yamaha classical guitar that lived in a closet for an unknown number of years. I got my own classical guitar after my senior year of high school, using money from the Kyle Palmer scholarship I was awarded that spring. I still have that cedar top Cordoba, pictured here with my mom’s piano, which lived in my grandma’s house from 1961 until we brought it to Brooklyn a few years ago. These are now my favorite writing tools. . *Edit* After posting this I learned that the recipients of this year’s Kyle Palmer Award are being announced today! The class of 2018 would have been born around the time I was receiving this award in 1999. My grandparents bought this piano for my mom in 1961. It sat in my grandma’s house, likely in the same spot, until I brought it to Brooklyn a few years ago. I don’t think it had ever been tuned and drifted flat across the board, some keys much worse than others. Early ‘60s Silvertone 1420. I used this guitar for it’s cheap and funky mojo throughout my last solo album. Here is a breakdown of the arpeggios I played in my previous video. I call these “2-1” arpeggios because you alternate between playing 2 and 1 notes per string. The first video begins the pattern on the A string (pitch D) and the second video begins on the E string (pitch A). . The first arpeggio is a Major 7th chord. Memorize this one first, and say “13571357” with each respective note so that you know which chord tone you’re on. The subsequent arpeggios simply lower one note a half step to produce a different type of 7th chord. The formulas: . Major 7 = 1 3 5 7 Dominant 7 = 1 3 5 b7 Minor 7 = 1 b3 5 b7 Half Diminished = 1 b3 b5 b7 Diminished 7 = 1 b3 b5 bb7 . Arpeggios don’t always have to be face melting guitar pyrotechnics, they’re also perfect for practicing clarity and in your clean (and dry) tone. This is a sequence I work on with my students. It takes you through the five most common 7th chord arpeggios starting on both the low E and A strings. Cmaj7, Fmaj7, Bmin7b5, Fdim7 (substitute for E7b9), Am7, Dm7, G7.
