!!Welcome to My Blog!!

Hello! I am an 🍭aspiring🍎 coulrologist and will be using this blog to gather and document information about clowns and clown husbandry along with my personal experiences working towards my degree in coulrology :)

Much of my current Clown Knowledge is not based off of up close interactions, but rather classes and observational studies of clowns. I have done some volunteer work at clown rescues and shelters, but I need to stress that I am by No means a professional and I'm not as familiar with handling clowns as I am about the science surrounding them.

This being the case I would like to preface all of my blog with a big ol' disclaimer! Please do not use me as your only source of information on clowns! Please consult an experienced professional in clown care, handling, and behavior before making any decisions based off of my blog!

I try very hard to make sure all my information is accurate and up-to-date, but sometimes things slip through the cracks. If something I've said needs correction please please let me know and I will do my best to fix any inaccuracies :] !!

Saw a clown on roller skates today while passing by the clown park and Wow could that fella go

Something I see a lot in my area that shouldn't but does still catch me off guard is the amount of surprise when folks unfamiliar with clowns learn that the large majority of clown breeds (and All mime/mime mixes) naturally feature prominent and Very functional teeth and claws.

Sometimes the confusion is almost endearing? funny? in a way, coming from a place of having previously studied the evolutionary line of clowns. They have teeth and claws because they descend from species that were primarily predatory omnivores :>

(Court Jesters and their ancient ancestors are a fascinating study. The evolution, domestication, and selective breeding that led to modern clowns is one of my favorite deep dives. It's a Lot to go into however and can get very confusing)

The function of teeth and claws in clowns has also been adjusted through selective breeding over the years. Scare clowns feature exaggeratedly large sets of both teeth and claws for aesthetic purposes, some breeds of working clowns have been bred to have incredibly strong and thick claws but smaller teeth. Party clowns and especially Birthdays have been bred to show as little visible sharpness as possible, but still have functional teeth and have claws that if not trimmed and filed regularly can become quite sharp. Some breeds -see beanbag clowns and porcelains- have had their claws bred into a pseudo-vestigial form, where they have become much more nail-like. In the case of beanbags, they are only exposed if damage occurs to the soft exterior of their limbs. Most breeds of porcelain clowns also have unusual mouths that evolved fused enamel plates where the molars should be due to parts of their diets needing to be ground rather than chewed.

(all porcelains must consume appropriate amounts of soft minerals such as kaolinite and mica, along with other ceramic focused materials, such as bone ash, to prevent a condition where their hard porcelain features are unable to maintain their structural integrity and become incredibly fragile)

A clowns teeth and claws also play a large part in it's ability to properly communicate with other clowns, along side functioning as a way to display distress or agitation. While clowns typically do not bare their teeth as it could be confused with an awkwardly performed smile, often times clowns will posture with their mouth open with their teeth visible as a way to signal to others that they are uncomfortable or need space.

It is important to be educated about these types of displays, as unknowingly provoking an uncomfortable clown is never going to end well for anyone. it's also especially frustrating when folks act like clowns are dangerous simply because they can see that they have sharp teeth or claws. Cat's have those too and if you make one distressed enough it will Also use them :/

Researching the behavioral contrast between clowns bred with primarily indoor vs outdoor living conditions is always super fun for me ! Some clowns, like porcelains, have had winter dormancy related behaviors completely bred out of them, while some specialty scare clown lines have begun to exhibit aestivation.
