one of my coworkers who's vaguely into hockey asked what my "deal with gavin mckenna" was today and it pissed me off so bad, but i was trying to be civil so i came here to rant. please listen up.
like a lot of stuff that's heralded as canadian culture, the making of hockey comes from indigenous traditions. mi'kmaq people carved the first hockey sticks from ironwood. the lakota souix played shinny like 200 years before it was called hockey. thousands of years before skating was a sport or an artform, the iroquois attached blades to their shoes, made from elk and cariboo tibias, to aid them in moving across the ice.
during the playoffs, rogers (canadian telecom giant) came out with an ad campaign about how hockey is "our game" and it made my blood boil a little, how overwhelmingly white hockey is even though as an indigenous person, it feels kinda like my game in particular.
i've seen indigenous players like chris simon (nika-kakwê-wânaskân) and jordin tootoo be on relied as agitators and enforcers, heard about young players facing abuse from coaching staff, have racist comments made about them online and have their name mocked on espn.
i've never seen an indigenous player be raised up for his skill with such excitement by the hockey community until gavin mckenna, and i was so glad to see him go 1st oa. i was on facetime with my cousin on draft day. we watched gavin get called up, saw his beadwork, saw his clearly indigenous family on the screen. we cried about it a little together, finally feeling like maybe this is our game, a little bit more than it was before.
edit: i've gotten a few anons wondering where i'm from but we're a only a few guys so i'll just say i'm cree and leave it at that. if you wanna come off anon and chat, i'd be more comfortable sharing.
It’s KK’s turn with the cup!
If I still had a hockey podcast, this is definitely something I would talk about.
What a guy. What a fella.
Frederik Andersen, my beloved goalie, you did it. You actually took it to Legoland. Don't ever change 🫶🏻🫶🏻✨️✨️✨️
Just saw my doctor type "FUCKED FOR LIFE" on my chart then he turned the screen away and stopped making eye contact with me

being a sports fan will have you saying shit like 'oh boy i hope my favorite millionaire's business negotiations go well today!'
the more i think abt it the more i get mad that the owner's wife and kids are on the cup ABOVE the coaches and players. tom dundon i am mailing a pipe bomb to your house.
just making sure we all heard chase reid on sound of hockey podcast saying he eats 20 honey dipped timbits 40 minutes before warmups every game
his coach got mad and said he was going to crash out but he insists he never has "I feel great ... if I didn't have to play I could probably do a solid 50 pack ... no man it's not gross they're so dialed"
remember when hockey was on tv...sometimes i can still hear her voice
to the enlightened mind, hockey pads are both armour and lingerie, in this essay I will
