personally I am of the opinion that vegans who are like “the way our food system currently works under capitalism on a large scale is exceptionally cruel to all animals including humans and is not sustainable, so I’m doing what I can to make the most ethical choices available to me about what I eat and encourage others to do the same” are generally very reasonable people who I agree with in spades. but vegans who seem to think human beings are not themselves animals who are ultimately also part of the food chain but instead some kind of other paternalistic higher entity that can never engage in ethical and sustainable hunting practices (and especially the fringe I’ve seen who think other carnivorous animal predators are also evil and need to be eliminated) are people I regard as foolish at best if not actively anti-indigenous and racist
My family finally sat me down and got me to watch the Project Hail Mary Movie- I’m already a fan of the book and have been since 2023. I do want to say I REALLY liked it and felt it was a very faithful adaptation all things considered! He’s not book accurate but Rocky is pretty cute. Loved all his chirps and vocalizations! Overall tho I just love PHM and Weirs works in general so I have some NOTES
- Movie Stratt feels so much nicer than Book Stratt? They don’t have as much time to develop her ofc, but still, I feel like they were going for a strict but misunderstood character when like… In the book she is a honest to god sociopath. Like she obviously cares about Grace in both book and movie and in the scene where she tells him she’s sending him anyway she’s obviously hurting in both, but is more outwardly upset in the movie.
- Speaking of that scene… I feel like they like Grace also got some changes to make him feel a little more likable. (And perhaps more pathetic for pity points) but in the book he does the same thing of citing his kids and Stratt calling it for the BS excuse that it is. Where it’s different however is that Grace gets MAD. He like yells at Stratt that she’s murdering him and she’s a horrible person. He says he doesn’t care about a humanity. He says that he will sabotage the mission and destroy the ship if she sends him. This is why he gets the drug for memory loss in the book. Basically movie Ryland is a pathetic coward, Book Ryland is a pathetic **selfish** coward. Who is also much angrier than his movie counterpart.
- A lot of the science was skipped over for the film but that’s alright. I think it will be good for movie enjoyers to read the book to understand the science.
- They took Rocky’s sweater????? He’s just naked????? Okay I guess he has a tool belt still but it’s not the same.
- On the topic of Rocky changes: I don’t love that they changed him to be proud about his eating habits in the movie? But it’s a change I can deal with, even if it was just for a joke that didn’t really land with me haha.
- At the end of the book Grace is not only WAY older but needs mobility aids. I would have preferred that ending? But I also understand the appeal of keeping Ryan Gosling young and able bodied. (Read: Conventionally attractive)
- Also in the epilogue Grace has a cool fucking ORGAN (instrument) that he uses to speak Eridian. I wish they had kept that instead of just using the laptop.
- I think the TTS voice was the right choice for a movie- but in the book Ryland understands Eridian while Rocky understands English. I like that idea a lot more. By the end of the book Ryland ‘speaks’ Eridian too with the organ like I mentioned.
- Movie looks absolutely BEAUTIFUL! Adrian so lived up to how pretty I imagined the planet!
- Not a fan of the AI computer type thing? They make it fairly clear in the book that computers are coded and the ship does not have AI. Grace basically figures things out by trial and error and that’s far more interesting.
- I understand the addition of the mental health room for asthetics… but I cannot imagine Stratt wasting a whole ROOM to create that! It’s fine for the movie since it’s a visual medium, but I’m glad it’s not in the book.
- Wish Grace had kept is little “I commend you to the stars” line he gives at his crew mates funerals! I found that line really touching and it made me cry on re-read when I knew more about them.
- My only REAL nitpick though is the change to the near-death scene after they collect the Taumeba at Adrian. In the movie Rocky breaks out of his little tunnel (jeopardizing all the air on both sides and making it unliveable for both of them? Maybe it’s just an oversight idk) but in the BOOK the way it happens is that Grace is still being crushed to death by the pilot seat- but Rocky climbs all the way down the ship to the bedroom airlock, comes through there, and then lifts the pilot seat off Grace and rights the ship before he basically is too injured to move. GRACE then grabs Rocky and carries him all the way back to the airlock. Problem is Rocky is HOT- so Ryland gets burn scars alllll along his arm and chest. Grace also almost kills Rocky by basically WD-40 blasting off all his scabs… but the point is that he and Rocky save EACH OTHER in that moment. I really like this scene and don’t see why they made the changes, I wish they had kept it more book accurate.
- It’s fine they skipped over the Taumeba farms cause it’s honestly a little tedious? And they cut most of the science anyway But I do wish they had spent more time explaining that the Taumeba was eating the fuel. And they had had a little more time on fixing that problem… feel they could have cut Carl and a little slice of fresh out of coma shenanigans to do this. Since this is far more important to the plot.
Yeah I think that’s about it? 9/10 movie because I have one big problem. But also I completely understand compressing a book into one movie is very very difficult. And I think almost everything they cut, reworked, or only just brushed over EXCEPT Taumeba and that one scene was fair.
Seriously y’all- please be careful, please drink water if it is available to you. Be kind to a neighboor if you can afford it. I love you all.

We need to get porn/fetish out of the trans tags. I have no issue with pornography in general but I should not be seeing bare tits in the transmasc tag.
