The climb towards Choi Sai Woo Park wasn't exactly a technical one but one that is simply filled with hundreds of concrete steps to reach her from Northpoint MTR station.

With each visit comes the stark realization that the winter air has been the biggest plus point to travel here each year.

That "turtle shell dessert" shown here is called Guilinggao (Chinese: 龟苓膏), commonly known in English as Turtle Jelly or Tortoise Jelly.

It is a staple in Hong Kong’s traditional herbal tea shops, prized more for its medicinal "cooling" properties than its flavor.

New Addition to the Family - SmallRig Grip for Canon R50V

As delicate as the camera is, it goes without saying that her default rubber grip will breakdown as soon as you decide to take her out to the real world...which is why this mandatory grip has to be used if I want my camera to remain clean and pristine in a year's time.

A necessary evil for this camera, which kinda says it all to who the camera was intentionally designed for.

The Canon R50V is still being configured to behave more like a camera than a video camera for me.

Hands-on experience reveals that her ergonomics is sub-par to any Nikon cameras I have owned. It's almost a given that you would need some sort of an additional grip to even hold the camera properly, even with the kit lens!

And I don't find it amusing that Canon has decided to now exclude any lens hood in any of her lenses, save those that probably cost a kidney. I will probably hunt for a Canon genuine hood later this week in Hong Kong.

Do I know which plant species they are? Nope.

Do I bother? Neither.

But the one thing I am very sure of, is that they simply look stunning to me. The added fact that this garden manages to house over 19,000 plant species drawn from Mediterranean, semi‑arid, and subtropical regions worldwide continues to boggle the mind with each visit.

New Addition to the Family - Apple Airpods 4 ANC

Picked this up onboard Celebrity Equinox last month with my free onboard credits, making it a nice Christmas gift for myself. Remember, this is the best way to spend all given credits as opposed to spending them mindlessly on exorbitant land excursion packages with the cruise company.

While it may not cancel ambient noise as effectively as say an Airpods Pro 3, does it quite decently as compared to my Sony WF-1000XM4.

The support for easy-connect and playback from all signed-in Apple devices is a big welcome, despite a known bug that some apps audio from these devices forcibly get routed to it even though it's not being in use.

The audible "self-ring" feature also came in quite handy as it often gets lost among my bags and heaps of bulky apparel while traveling. What else? Transparency mode is pretty responsive too, though I have yet to try the effectiveness of her hit feature - real-time language translation!

Hopefully, with new firmware, this can become a useful gear to me in 2026.

Canon R50V Awarded dFA 2025 Grand Design Award

When it was first launched back in early 2025, the first impression that hit me of the R50V was that of her design team - one that is squarely more dynamic and innovative.

The adjoining product Canon V1 conversely exerted an antiquated, almost boring contrast. So stark the disparity that it looks dead intentional that the company is at war with herself...with the launch that is.

Recalling 2012, it reminded me of that same feeling when she launched a EOS M with the Canon 5D Mark III within that same year!

One spell safe. The other, entrepreneurial. One speaks formulaic, the other experimental. Talk about that shiny EOS RV batch found on her to boot, the sensual curves where it needs to be, the unusual grip design, the terraced sharp edges, the multi-role hot shoe, the muscular brawn of Canon's C-Log 3 and you would begin to agree how she would easily mesmerise anyone with a USD600 RRP tag.

In this evolving world that often rewards form over substance, it is of no surprise that dFA recognises this bold design language and gave her an identical verdict.

It's the Canon EOS M that I wanted in 2025, despite the fact that it took Canon over 12 years to get there.

New Addition to the Family - Canon R50V

It must have been several years since I dispose what remain to be the only Canon camera left in my dry cabinet - Canon EOS M. It was more of a gift than anything else that it was "lost".

But with 2026 on us, I have finally found a worthy successor to the Canon EOS M - Canon EOS R50V just yesterday! It was a very deliberate move, as my focus in keeping with the tradition remains, that my Canon gear should offer an entirely different value in among the mountain of camera I already own.

I believe that remains so, in the quality of video that I can put out with it. Nikon has her root in photography, but I clearly remember that Canon, pioneered hers with videography. It was the Canon 5D Mark II I recalled, that got the world talking about capturing hollywood-grade work in a DSLR.

The Canon EOS M was a beast with the Magic Lantern addon for my videography work, but subsequent iterations got sloppier, bigger and more cumbersome. That Canon mojo never came back on my book...until now.

Canon Morphs the RP into a Porky R8 for $500 More!

With a crumbling dedicated camera market, Canon has once again rises to the challenge to hopefully convince the minds of camera phone consumers that she still has a few tricks left in the bag for better digital imageries.

Personally, I too am already swayed half way that a full frame camera should not cost any thing more than a grand these days, not to mentioned Canon R8′s $1500 asking price. The Nikon Z5 proves that it can be done, with the rest open to an endless debate if there be any difference in image quality between any full frame 24MP cameras in the market today.

p>Taking away a mechanical shutter is not exactly one wise way to cut cost at the expense of skewed images from electronic shutters. It's still but 24MP in resolution. It's still a single card slot pony, making real, commercial captures a risky preposition. As far as I can tell, putting the last nail on her new coffin was made when Canon decided to also remove the IBIS capability of the camera, making what I think could well be another sure sign on the wall of dismay, that Canon has also lost her touch in understanding what consumer actually wants in a real camera.

Canon EOS R7 Launched

Its only logical that Canon decided to discontinue the EOS M line as she completed her transition into the RF mount family of designs. The future is set as DSLR phases out into the sunset of the photography world.

Despite the fact that Nikon was the one to first introduce her cropped Z-mount cameras compared to Canon, the exorbitant price of her featureless FTZ adaptors have kept most traditional F-mount users from switching - a poor strategy that only end up shooting themselves in the foot.

Canon, however, was wise to offer multiple variants of her EF to RF mount adaptors en-massed, causing many Nikon users to abandon the Nikon brand for alternatives during the last 2 years.

I may try the Canon EOS R7 after having shot with the original Canon EOS M for the last decade here at Canon Studio. For the record, its still working just fine!
