I personally have a unique name (Stina), well, a name that is unique in Australia but not in my native Sweden. It is often mispronounced and misspelt. This blog has been very entertaining, and allows me to hear about stories similar to mine, but one thing frustrates me a lot. People are so annoyed that their names are misspelt, but they don't consider others. I think that it's important for those of us with different names to be aware of how difficult they can be for baristas and so on.
That’s a beautiful name! I honestly feel you on that point.
My name is pretty difficult at first glance, and it’s not one that rolls off the tongue either. I also understand that Baristas are working in a fast paced environment where the spelling of our names probably isn’t their priority.
My problem, along with probably others, lies within the fact that there are people that just dismiss our names, as if it’s just too difficult to try. Like teachers or strangers. I usually give people the upper hand to the point where I sometimes just don’t correct them. But I’ve learned how disrespectful to myself that can be, and then started realizing that if people were really interested in what I had to say or who I am, they would make an effort to get my identifier right. Ya know?
We were given these beautiful unique names for a reason. Same for the people who have typical, basic names. We should learn to try to connect with everyone on a first name basis :)
I appreciate you pointing this out though, because it is something that needs to be thought about! I’m also glad you find this blog entertaining.
