“You ever talk to the spider-kid? He’s got a saying: with great power comes great responsibility. Or something.” It half sounds like bullshit to Carol even though it’s true. It’s too sentimental. Honestly, Carol just wants to fuck back off to space. She’s just unable to do so when she knows that there are people who need help. “Responsibility: we don’t ask for it but have it all the same. That’s something we all have to deal with.”

Matt’s face flushed a bit when Carol repeated it out loud to him, the depth of that statement hitting him. But he didn’t mind. Thinking about Jen actually made him happy enough to flaunt her when the opportunity presented itself. “It’s definitely healthy. Besides, her clientele tends to be on a higher scale than mine anyways.”

“She’s definitely high profile.” Carol weighs her words carefully. The two are obviously close and she doesn’t want to offend. Jen has all but committed to being an Avenger after the explosion. With everything that’s gone down, they need her on their side. “Has she told you how deep of shit we’re in?”

“Me too, initially.” That’s what Carol was in her heart: just someone who loved to fly and wanted to touch the stars. “I was never happy with both my feet on the ground. I wanted to be out there, doing something. Things took a weird twist.”

“Your optimism is..” Tony trailed off. Appreciated? Admirable? Confusing? All of the above, maybe. He was stubborn when it came to solving problems, but wouldn’t necessarily call himself optimistic. “You really think we can get them to calm down?”

“Honest. I’m not out here trying to sugarcoat anything. It won’t get us anywhere.” Carol’s firm on that. She always has been. It had pissed Maria off more than once. “Maybe, if they want to keep acting like friends and offering resurrections when we get blown up. I don’t know. It seems too convenient.”

“Should we be concerned about that? It feels like something we should be concerned about..” The longer Clint thought about the logistics of all of them existing in the same plane of existence, he got existential and that was something he tried to avoid. So when Carol changed the subject, he pounced on the opportunity to not talk about the weird reality stuff. Unfortunately, hearing that their Nat died only made him feel even more existential as he frowned and nodded slowly while the blonde spoke. “Right, I can.. I can understand that.” He had to clear his throat before speaking again. “And you’re trying to bring the team back together again? Who else is left?”

“I think we have bigger problems right now.” Bigger than a reality merge. Carol can’t wrap her head around that. “Or, if not bigger, at least as pressing.” At this point, they need to make a giant list and figure out which fires are literal and which can wait to be extinguished. Hearing about Natasha — even a different Natasha — seems to strike a nerve. Carol files that away silently. “Bruce, Stephen, Spider-man, Thor and myself. We’re not all original, but it’s better than nothing. I even called Clint. He’s retired now, got some kid he’s training. We’re outsourcing.”

“Khonshu seems to think they’ll go for it.” Marc pointed out with a soft scoff as he just shook his head. He didn’t understand why they’d try to wage a war on the Avengers or anyone that wasn’t directly involved with Pleasant Hill, but then again Carol was right. The mutants had been completely unpredictable so far, and that was unsettling. The last thing he wanted was to get dragged into some kind of war, but he didn’t know if he’d have a choice. “And have you guys been talking about your next steps? If they do decide they want to go there?”

“Does he now?” Carol doesn’t put much stock in the giant skeleton bird. They’ve never met, but everything she’s heard has been ranging from incredibly mediocre to bad. “We were talking before the explosion and the mutants decided to graciously resurrect everyone. Sam seems to think war is off the table, but something’s off.”

Unfortunately was right. Marc was far from the stereotypical heroes that typically earned spots on a roster for the Avengers. He was almost waiting for her to say ‘sike’ and move on, but she didn’t. He didn’t like hearing that they were desperate, because that likely meant that this war stuff was getting serious. That it was holding some merit to it. He’d done war, and he was in no rush to jump back into it. “What, like it’s a cheerleading team? Are things really getting so bad that you’d come to me of all people?”

“They’re interested in your wife as well. We actually liked her more than you.” The Scarlet Scarab is less problematic than Moon Knight in some ways. Not that Carol really gives a rats ass about problematic. Carol scoffs slightly. “Like I said, desperate times. And it’s just a meeting, Spector. Not a lifetime commitment.”

“And you think that I do? I live in space ninety percent of the time deliberately.” It’s where she’s needed. Earth was once her home, but it hasn’t been for a long time. “Meetings are being mysteriously blown up. If you didn’t see that on the news, I’m sure Marc told you considering the fact that he was there. This is everyone’s problem now.”

Unfortunately, we’re nowhere close to making progress on that.” Stephen didn’t like facing problems that he didn’t have the solution to, especially when it directly affected this many people’s livelihoods. “Got room for a stowaway?”

“Then we contain it. We find a way to make progress. Whatever you’re doing isn’t working, so try something new.” Keep it simple, black and white. If you failed, try again. “You know I’d have to carry you, right?” A small smile plays on her lips. “You don’t look like the type who enjoys bridal style.”
