I love it when people use "shrimp" to mean "beyond the human range". like "shrimp colors" but applied to other things. "shrimp emotions" "shrimp sounds" "shrimp morality", as if shrimp are living some kind of transcendent existence that humans can never comprehend

I gotta talk about Mr. Collins in The Other Bennet Sister.

Gotta hand it to the writing and performance for giving him some nuance. Right from the jump we kind of see him as a foil to Mr Darcy, who is also awkward and kind of unpleasant, but because he's attractive and rich gets away with it. Darcy gets to grow in the the story, but Collins is left awkward, much like Mary. So in Mary's story, it's so interesting to see both of them as people who are trying to do what is expected of them, trying to be good and likable, and just always missing the mark. Largely due to environment and circumstance doubling down on the insecurities they both have, it turns into a vicious cycle for them both.

So when Mary, downtrodden runs into him in the library trying to read, his solace as well as hers, about how to be happy, it's such a human moment. They get to connect on how hard it feels to try and feel you always fall short. In that connection, they both have a place to start.

After many years of being pretty chill about most stuff since The Magnus Archives, by fandomness passion's torch has been relighted by the 1-2 punch of The Other Bennet Sister and Project Hail Mary. I apologize for the spam posting, but the properties are too popular for my deep takes to find roots there.
