"I always have loved you." Elena inhaled deeply. "You know, when you stole my heart, I wasn’t expecting you to lose it."
"I am really sorry- I-" Elijah turned around facing the doppelganger.
"No - don't. I just - can you please leave."
"No. I am not going anywhere. I - as you know - have always put my family first. But no more."
"Gia was innocent. Elena, too. Innocence does not do well with our family."
"She is not the only thing Klaus stole from you last night." Rebekah said.
"Hayley was not mine to steal."
"Elijah, it hurts me to see you pretend that you don't deserve happiness."
"And what about you? Where is your happiness?"
Rebekah turned away, drawing a deep breath. "I guess, it's a family trait - all we love we turn to ash."
"I stayed away because I wanted to keep you safe and because I had already failed you- not once. I - you better off without me. But then - Rebekah's words keep hacking at my heart and - I don't want to deny myself to be happy. No more. Destiny has put you back in my path and I want to be with you - if you still want me?"
Elena looked stunned at the Original. Breath stopped in her lungs. She gazed into his mild brown eyes, nodding.
"Yes?" Elijah looked for reassurance.
"Yes!" Elena nodded again.
He cupped Elena’s cheeks in his hands. Her skin was smooth and pale, wiping away the tear that rolled out with his thumbs.
"I love you, Elena- and from today - always and forever."
The doppelganger smiled, resting her hands on his as he closed the gap between them. Time stopped in a collision of senses when his lips met hers.
He was at home. There was nothing and no one that would keep him away from her.
my own take on the prompt_
"You know, when you stole my heart, I wasn’t expecting you to lose it."
