Chapter 7: For All Time. Always.
---Excerpt
âYou canât kill me,â He Who Remains said, his arms wide as Cold stopped, panting. âI already know whatâs going to happen. See?â
He vanished again, reappearing back in his seat.
âItâs a trick,â Cold snapped, retreating to his seat, and ignoring Sara and Leonard.
âDonât you wonder how Iâm able to get out of the way just before you kill me?â He Who Remains asked.
âNo.â Leonardâs voice was calm, and seemed to soothe Cold enough to make him sit. âItâs that TemPad youâve got there.â
Leonard gestured to the device on He Who Remainsâs wrist, and Sara could see that it was a form of a TemPad, like the one in her pocket.
âRight.â He Who Remains grinned at Leonard. âBut how do I already have it loaded up with everything I need to know to keep from being killed by you?â
Leonard was silent, and He Who Remains looked at each of them with a grin. âItâs easy. I know it all. And Iâve seen it all.â
He got up from his chair, going to the window behind the desk and spreading his arms wide. âEverything you guys did on Lamentis, I saw. All the stuff the TVA didnât know about, I knew.â
Turning, he looked at Cold. âAll the scheming.â He looked at Sara and Leonard. âAll theâŠtalking you did last night.â
Sara felt a flare of anger at that. That had been for them. She put the cup down and started to rise. Leonardâs hand tightened on her shoulder, and she stayed in place.
He Who Remains seemed unconcerned as he came to stand behind his chair, leaning on the back with a wink. âQuite sentimental, very touching stuff by the way.â
âNo,â Leonard said, pulling his hand away from her as he put his cup down. âWe broke out of your perfect timeline. Thatâs how we got here.â
âWrong!â He Who Remains said with a sing-song voice. âEvery step you took to get hereâLamentis, the Void, I paved the road. You justâŠwalked down it.â
Sara felt her heartbeat in her throat. No. They had won. They broke free. They solved the Void, not him. Not someâŠTime-Keeper.
âAnd I have the rest of it,â He Who Remains gestured to one of the books on his table, âright here. Everythingâs that going to happen. Thereâs only one way this can go.â
