A quiet moment at the Black-browed albatross colony. Sitting on their cliff top nests, you can spot the distinctive black ‘brow’ of dark feathers near the eye that gives them their name. Beaver Island: First stop was a visit to the Gentoo penguin colony high on a hill overlooking the South Atlantic. Penguins do seem to find the most beautiful spots to nest. Most of these nests had eggs. If you look closely, you may be able to spot an egg or two. Welcome to Beaver International Airport: From Sea Lion Island, we flew to Beaver where we were warmly greeted by this sign. The hut houses the emergency safety gear and marks the grass landing strip on the island. Notice it is built atop a sled. Its former use was for building fences and could be dragged along in the field. Now, it serves as Terminal 1. Beaver Island is a remote island where the Poncet family lives. I was lucky enough to be the guest of Juliette & Dion in December 2018. Upon my arrival, the total population of the island rose to 4. Sea Lion Island: Can you spot the penguins? Rockhoppers arrive by sea, swimming to find a wave that will propel them onto the rocks where they use their clawed feet to cling to the cliff face. If the attempt is successful, they scurry up and out of the waves’ reach to rest and preen before continuing up the cliff face. (Part. 2).
