NEET Dropper vs Fresher: Who Performs Better in Kolkata? [Survey-Based]
Every year, thousands of students in Kolkata appear for NEET—some for the first time (freshers), and others after taking a gap year (droppers). But the big question remains: Who actually performs better—droppers or freshers?
To get an accurate answer, we conducted a survey of 300 NEET aspirants (both droppers and freshers) from different parts of Kolkata, including Salt Lake, Behala, Dum Dum, Garia, and Park Street. The students came from various schools and coaching centers across the city.
Let’s take a deeper look into the facts, figures, and realities behind this ongoing debate—along with expert inputs and personal stories.
Understanding the Basics: Who is a Fresher and Who is a Dropper?
Before we dive into the results, let’s clarify what we mean by:
Fresher – A student who appears for NEET right after Class 12.
Dropper – A student who has already appeared for NEET once and takes a gap year to prepare and appear again.
Both categories of students have different challenges, mindsets, and preparation approaches. But which one has the edge?

Why Droppers Tend to Perform Better
Here are some key reasons behind the better performance of drop-year students:
1. More Time to Prepare
Droppers have an entire year dedicated to NEET. They don’t have board exams, school work, or extra distractions. This focused time allows them to:
Understand difficult topics more deeply
Practice more mock tests
Revise multiple times
2. Maturity and Exam Experience
Having already experienced NEET once, droppers understand the pressure and exam pattern better. This gives them an edge in handling time and anxiety.
3. Error Correction from Past Mistakes
Droppers learn from their previous failures. They know where they went wrong—whether it was concept clarity, time management, or exam fear—and they work to fix it.

What About Freshers?
Freshers are not at a disadvantage, but their dual pressure of Class 12 board exams and NEET preparation can be overwhelming.
Many students reported:
Struggling to balance board syllabus with NEET syllabus
Not having enough time for mock tests
Getting anxious due to the lack of previous exam experience
However, freshers who start early in Class 11, follow a proper timetable, and take guidance seriously, can do exceptionally well.
In fact, in our survey, 22% of freshers scored above 600, proving that success is still very much possible.
What Experts in Kolkata Say
We reached out to a few NEET mentors and teachers from leading institutes in Kolkata. Here’s what they shared:
“Droppers do better not just because they have more time, but because they are emotionally more prepared. They’ve seen failure, and that gives them a reason to fight harder.” — Mr. Arindam Saha, Biology Teacher, Salt Lake
“Freshers can crack NEET too, but they need early coaching and proper planning from Class 11. The rush in Class 12 doesn’t allow room for trial and error.” — Dr. Sudipta Ghosh, Chemistry Faculty, Behala
These insights highlight that mindset, planning, and mentorship are as important as the number of attempts.
Real Student Stories from Kolkata
💬 Ritika (Fresher, 2024)
“I scored 585 in my first attempt. I had joined coaching in Class 11, and they helped me maintain balance between boards and NEET. It was tough, but doable with discipline.”
💬 Arjun (Dropper, 2024)
“I failed to clear NEET in 2023. I was shattered. But during my drop year, I joined a fast-track batch and focused completely on my weak areas. I scored 640 this time and got a govt. MBBS seat.”
These stories show that both droppers and freshers can succeed—with the right support and mindset.
