Would you consider Thomas Jefferson a father of the abolitionist movement?

Absolutely not. Thomas Jefferson took no part in the abolitionist movement what-so-ever. He did in fact own over 600 slaves in the duration of his life and only freed one that’s recorded while he was alive. He may have believed slavery was morally wrong but that did not stop him from profiting off of the enslavement economically.

‘’Jefferson placed two busts, a likeness of himself and his political opponent Alexander Hamilton, opposite one another in the Entrance Hall. Both were modeled by the Italian sculptor Giuseppe Ceracchi in Philadelphia in 1793 and 1794. One of Jefferson’s grandchildren said:

“the eye settled with a deeper interest on busts of Jefferson and Hamilton, by Ceracchi, placed on massive pedestals on each side of the main entrance—"opposed in death as in life,” as the surviving original sometimes remarked, with a pensive smile, as he observed the notice they attracted.“

Happy birthday W.E.B Du Bois

Du Bois’s theoretical concepts and empirical findings were trend setting as he challenged ideologies about black inferiority. However, this path less traveled meant standing alone and making theoretical claims that individuals on both sides of the aisle pragmatically disagreed with. Unlike others during his era, Du Bois supplemented his theoretical suppositions on black plight, the urban and rural environment, and the black middle class with empirical research documenting structural racism as the main culprit of racial inequality.
