Jennifer English wins Best Performance for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Thank you to everyone who voted. This is not just my award. This takes a village and oh my God, I love my passionate, beautiful souled, artistic, clever, beret wearing village. Every single one of you. Guillaume. Jen. Special shout out to Charlotte and Adeline. And of course my wonderful Ben, who has been my ride or die throughout all of this. My big brother. Thank you. Thank you to my beautiful girlfriend. And I just want to say to every neurodivergent person watching this in this room, because I know there's probably quite a lot of you. And at home, to all of you that feel like life is stuck on hard mode, this one is for you. And thank you so much to the games community and industry for giving us, so many of us, a home. For those who come after. Thank you.
This may mean little to other people however I am autistic and have trouble with coordination. Especially now, it’s gotten much worse. My hands even shake sometimes. I only get good at video games by playing them over and over, and I won’t play anything on ultra hard because in games like Horizon I can’t drop the difficulty. My clumsiness and cognitive ability suck sometimes- usually on bad sensory days when I have trouble talking too. I want to be able to put the level anywhere I want to anytime I want to. That’s accessibility.
I get embarrassed playing games with other people besides my son, who I play Fortnite with. We act really stupid so it doesn’t matter that I can’t manage to jump where I want or am unable to hit the right button at the right nanosecond. I don’t do bad especially with sniping.
I am not coordinated in any aspect of my life and have trouble using a pen or pencil in ways that don’t look like crap, stuff scribbled out everywhere.
When Jennifer English said this during the Games Awards, it smacked me right in the face. I cried instantly. It makes me feel less like I can’t keep up and feel less alone due to withdrawing myself when I feel stupid for taking so long to think about things, look at things, and take everything in that I can. It reminds me that my entire life doesn’t have to be lived on hard mode and I am not alone.
And this made me feel seen- I always play story mode at first. She’s my new idol.

Well deserved GOTY

Culture is so obsessed with the idea of lone geniuses that it doesn't really appreciate that most of the progress of science (and likely every other discipline) occurs collaboratively, in babysteps, and usually through a lot very tedious, utterly unsexy, work.
This is what’s so faulty with our short sighted coverage of scientific discoveries. You hear politicians question why we spend money on science studying insect wings and then decades later that research gets used by NASA for the most efficient way to fold/unfold solar panels on spacecraft. All of science is connected and useful because it enhances our understanding of the universe
When lasers were discovered they were called “a solution without a problem”, noone had any idea what to use them for. Since then they’re revolutionised communications and SO many parts of technology. CDs, DVDs, printing, fast internet, laser etching for making computer chips, laser eye surgery, spectroscopy, LIDAR measurements of weather patterns, barcode scanners, cooling atomic clocks, nuclear fusion, microscopy, LED technology and materials research. I’m probably not even scratching the surface here. Fund theory and fundamental science research.
It's actually kind of heartening, lasers; because before they were invented, their only real antecedents in science fiction were things like rayguns and heatrays and what not. But it actually turns out that their usefulness as a weapon is extremely limited, whereas their usefulness for just about everything else is incredible. It's one of the occasions where we flipped the "Dual Use" coin and it landed very solidly on the good side.

If you feel ashamed of getting government provided assistance
whether that's Snap, or cash assistance or housing or insurance or WHATEVER.
I just want to say- I am a tax paying middle class person.
For the love of whatever you find holy, TAKE THE HELP. Seriously. Please. I am paying these taxes, and I am begging you to use that money to make your life better.
I find it tremendously depressing when my tax money goes to tanks for cops or subsidies for billionaires or general colonizing bullshit.
I want my tax money to improve your life. I do not give one single shit what you do with your cash assistance. I don't care if you think you maybe possibly could have gotten by without SNAP. If you can qualify TAKE IT. Eat as well as you can. Live as well as you can.
If you feel bad, picture me, cheering you on with every single choice you make that brings you comfort, stability or joy.
You are not a burden. You are my neighbor. There is enough to go around and I want us all to thrive.
There's a piece of advice that goes something like, "Whenever you feel like an imposter, just remember that some mediocre white guy is probably doing half the job you're doing with twice the confidence for twice the pay."
Well here's another piece of advice for you:
Whenever you feel guilty about accepting government assistance, just remember that the US Pentagon spent literally hundreds of millions of the American people's hard earned tax dollars bankrolling FOUR FUCKING TRANSFORMERS MOVIES.
Once upon a time during Trump 1.0 the government shut down and, as an independent government contractor, I stopped getting paid.
Unfortunately at the time, I couldn’t apply for unemployment because I was technically still employed… by myself. I just didn’t have income from my client. I think this may have changed under COVID, but I digress.
Not exactly government-funded, but it was the kindness of food banks and other “handouts” that helped me make my final paycheck last until we reopened. Anyone who doesn’t support welfare is missing the point — these programs are there because hard times can fall on anyone for any reason. It isn’t something to be ashamed about. It just is life.
So yes. Take the benefits (government sponsored or non-profit) that we all pay into and repay the kindness when you get back on your feet ❤️
What a time to be alive.
Happy Black History Month to all and to all a good night ❤️🖤💚
the david zwirner gallery and the felix gonzalez torres foundation in the smithsonian removed the descriptive plaque for portrait of ross in la by felix gonzalez-torres. the old plaque explained portrait for ross' origins as the artist's partner's aids related death, and replaced it with a plaque with absolutely no information about the piece itself, who ross was, or who gonzalez-torres was either. portrait of ross was also reeranged to lay on the floor long ways instead of in a pile as it typically is situated, and the plaque outside the exhibition FOR GONZALEZ-TORRES omits his sexuality, as well as his aids related death. i'm in utter disbelief
By omitting the tragic story behind Felix González-Torres "Untitled" (Portrait of Ross in L.A.), the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery i

Are YOU gonna let THE GOVERNMENT tell YOU what YOUR GENDER is? That doesn't sound like Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness to me! PROTECT your individual FREEDOMS and call your senator: we want the GOVERNMENT to stay OUT OF OUR PANTS! GENDER FREEDOM NOW!
Two men in your neighborhood are married... to EACH OTHER? Congratulate them for exercising their AMERICAN RIGHT to follow the footsteps of our FOUNDING FATHERS! They've got a fully AMERICAN spirit of FREEDOM and REBELLION! GOD BLESS THE USA.
Your coworker has a different RELIGION from yours? Well, that's just INTERESTING and you should talk about it on your UNION-APPROVED LUNCH BREAK. The UNITED STATES OF AMERICA was FOUNDED on Freedom of Religion and ANYONE should be allowed to seek the AMERICAN DREAM!
You think someone might be in this GREAT country ILLEGALLY? NO YOU DON'T! No one is in this country illegally! The minute anyone steps on our SOVEREIGN SOIL they're your FELLOW AMERICAN and where they come from is NO ONES BUSINESS.
