the problem is that a lot of people think that the evil of eugenics is "playing with forces of nature man was not meant to meddle with" and not the whole cohercion and killing and mutilation of people
additional problem is that a lot of people think the reason eugenics is bad is because people keep doing war crimes about it, and not the whole thing where eugenics is inherently both violent and coercive, and also completely and literally just incorrect about how biology and humans work on every level
Yeah, like even assuming it was viable and could work as intended, (it isn't and it can't) it is literally impossible to do it without being evil.
Cause one way or another the thing that makes it eugenics is the idea that there are "favorable traits" in humans that we would be trying to encourage and "unfavorable traits" we're trying to surpress. Who is we? Who gets to decide what's favorable and not? People will claim they can determine this objectively, but you literally can't. It's a value judgment, and value comes from people's opinions.
There's just no avoiding power and oppression here. The fact that it always seems to be minorities whose traits are deemed "unfavorable" is not some glitch or error. It is the entire point.
much depends on the context in which the word “eugenics” is being tossed around
frequently, it’s raised by people who want to use it to lend rhetorical teeth to their argument for eliminating the right to abortion. it’s worth contemplating why that is and what it implies. this is a word that’s been weaponized, and what work it’s doing, to what ends, in any given usage should be carefully interrogated
furthermore, i do just need to point out that objectively unfavorable genetic conditions exist
you may be heavily invested in the idea that every single thing that can go wrong with human development falls equally into the category we call “disability,” with the strong implication that it should be accommodated and managed and optimized rather than eliminated. some of the more familiar developmental conditions really are like that, and ethical arguments defending them exist. but there are misfortunes of this kind that produce appalling outcomes with no upsides and nothing to salvage. it would be inappropriate and cruel of me to push examples on people who have no personal or occupational reason to know about them. point is, it would be an unmixed good if we developed and consistently utilized the technology to reduce the incidence of such conditions to zero forever
when i see jeremiads against eugenics divorced from any specific context, my first question is what specific evil we’re talking about, and which side in the argument at hand is for it vs against it
there might be someone here arguing for eugenics who is pushing for the systematic sterilization of members of a certain race. that would be evil!
there might be someone here arguing against eugenics who is pushing to coerce somebody else who has just had the worst imaginable news about their pregnancy to keep that pregnancy and spend the rest of their own life sustaining an intensely suffering child with no ability to perceive or return love. that too would be evil!
also, to the frequently seen argument of "you not creating more people like me is genocide" I raise "ok, so you not creating exact clones of myself is killing me personally".
(I was raised as a member of an ethnic minority, where the more rabid nationalists considered it every woman's duty to have lots of kids, so "our churches and our schools" stayed full - basically you had to out-breed the other local ethnicities. To which I said then and now - fuck you, my body is mine.)
[through gritted teeth] i am strong and independent enough to experience cuddling a lovely person as a positive thing even if we won't exchange contacts afterwards
maybe it’s because i actually have sisters, but when people start waxing poetic about the bond of sisterhood that exists between all womankind i’m like hang on i don’t know you, you’re not my sister
do you remember those bad posts that used to go around like “girlhood is sharing tangerines”? i guess the common denominator is an assumption of familiarity on the basis of gender that makes me want to peel off skin.

#if my childhood being raised as a girl is anything to go off of- no. there is no such thing as universal sisterhood. just cliques.
From the comments
I always assumed those people had never once been bullied and/or were likely bullies themselves. The only way you get out of middle school believing "ALL people of my gender are siblings" are if everyone was too afraid of you to victimize you.

Oh and speaking as a distinctly male-socialized trans woman, the same applies to dudes who act like bitches are such drama and men are always bros to each other (or at least that when men are unfriendly they express it in an honest, straightforward way). Like, if you're a guy saying that, you have never had the experience of being treated as an autistic lolcow and expected to just "take a joke."
yeah. one logical (if misguided) train of thought after that being "if women are sisters then I guess I am not one" (it's misguided because noone is in fact entitled to push upon you, or take away, woman-ness itself), except that would of course mean that one is committing the sin of not-like-other-girls, for which all mistreatment becomes retroactively justified. :p
(but for real, I've spent most of my life single and so ended up receiving my share of close-relationship-type hurting from family members, friends and flatmates who were women, so it's mind-boggling to me how some people can consider sisterhood a place of safety just based on the gender of the people involved.)
For anyone wondering, the PhD student's name is Myra Cheng.
Here's a link to an article about the study from the Stanford Report: link.
Across three preregistered studies, participants interacting with sycophantic AI became more convinced of their own rightness and less willing to repair relationships. Yet at the same time, participants rated sycophantic AI models as higher quality, more trustworthy, and more desirable for future use, which may explain why this behavior has persisted despite its harmful impacts.

Oh, to be granted the power to speak to animals for just like 38 seconds, so that I could tell this pebble-brained feathery fuckass that nobody is impressed that he started singing earlier than anybody else. There's no bird pussy available at 2 am. The dames can sense your desperation. Stop screaming for at least three more hours.
thats most likely a bat
I have never seen or heard a bat in real life, but I think I could tell one apart from a passerine.
I assume the bird would take those 38 seconds to tell the nacked monkey where he can shove his light pollution ...
I'm gonna need more than 38 seconds to explain the bird that the midnight sun was already here before humans even arrived.
has anyone considered that it was probably her house too. where else was she supposed to put her chintz?

I can understand and be supportive of women who feel distress and disgust about their own attraction to men (because of a combination of personal trauma and the background radiation of misogyny), or who get into freely chosen and enjoyed sexual experiences and zone out in the middle, feeling shame about "betraying" their feminism by giving a man pleasure. Feelings are complicated and the situation to navigate is hard.
But I draw the line at ideologizing any of these as good feminism, and using it for looking down at others. No, as a feminist in fact I believe that the good ending is when absolutely noone is ashamed about their orientation, where choices about whom to fuck are made freely and with full awareness, and people fuck people that they do not despise. Your self-hate does not make you better and more enlightened than me. Pressuring me to pretend that I agree with this ideology is not the same as just asking for support for personal pain.
"sex should be a good experience with someone you do not hate" and "you can just choose to not have sex without feeling demeaned for part of you wanting it in the first place" and "hating yourself for your orientation is not an useful thing" should be uncontroversial, and yet.
