Chapter 2

“You are my sunshine, my only sunshine,” I speak, and magic pours into it. There’s a tinge of the usual oil slick of my magic, and a rush of Si’s smoke, but it also smells like the stock room of the apothecary Fiona would bring me to when she was working, like their cramped herb garden round back.

I close my eyes, focusing on channeling the rush of magic and the familiar earthy smell.

“Basil!” Si exclaims, and I can almost feel the rush of her breath across my lips.

Fiona and Nico are making plans for after graduation, and they don’t include Ebb. She’s lost without them, but she feels at home with the goats and Mara. She doesn’t want to leave Watford, and Mistress Pitch gave her the choice to stay once before. Can she make the same choice after that night in the White Chapel?

Ebb returns to Watford as an Epimelides, a nymph tied to protect an animal herd. She reunites with the dryad Mara, reliving when they first met until Ebb decided to stay on as the goatherd at Watford.
