Dean almost couldn’t believe it when he saw that huddled body swaddled in a tan trenchcoat sitting in the middle of the dungeon floor. Cas was back. After months of searching, digging through the archives to find a way to drag his ass out of the Empty, they had finally done it. But something was wrong. This wasn’t the Castiel that smiled up at him with a tearful goodbye after revealing his true happiest moment. This was a wild, snarling beast of a man, warped and twisted, feral thanks to the damage of the Empty. A man who would probably rip out Dean’s throat rather than confess his love. Even when Dean breaks through that wild exterior, he discovers that Castiel still thinks he’s trapped in the hell that is the Empty. That nothing around him is real. Dean just has to get through to him.

One thing I will never take for granted is that even almost four years after our show ended, we’re still getting fic. And fix it fic, at that. Four years after the end of Supernatural, and we’re still unsatisfied, and willing to write our own ending, as our beloved Misha Collins told us to do when the show ended. 

Broken (The Worst is Over Now) is another one of those amazing fix-it fics that could easily stand in as a satisfying conclusion to the show, the one we didn’t get in canon. When I tell you I would have ate up an entire season of this idea, I’m not kidding. Dean is a wreck after losing Cas and using all his energy to find a way to bring him home, until his resources run out, along with his will to keep going. Instead, he’s giving in to his depression, until Sam calls in reinforcements. 

Rowena. Up from hell with a spell in hand, once that successfully yanks Cas out of the Empty—only Cas thinks none of it is real, that it’s just another nasty trick being played on him by the Empty, another way to torture him, and break his spirit the same way it's been doing since his confession. What results is ultimately a story about Dean’s love, and how he comes to terms with this new version of Cas and what it takes to convince him they really are, in fact, what’s real. This is a great fic that had me laughing and in tears at various points, and if that isn’t the mark of a good fic, I don’t know what is. Add in our favorite love story and we’ll consider this one a winner.

“Thank you, Dean,” Cas says, softly, surprised but looking at Dean in a way that feels dangerous.

He turns away to clean the dishes. The timer for his mac and cheese interrupts any thoughts Dean might have been having, thank fuck. He’s gotta focus. Taking the almost-done dish out of the oven, Dean moves it to the warming rack and makes an executive decision.

“Right. So, this ain’t an episode of Bake Off, ya feel me?”

Cas tilts his head, his mouth full of lobster roll.

“I’m not putting on a show here, I’m working. It’s my job to feed you, but if you’re gonna hang around, you’re gonna have to help out.” It would save Dean a boatload of time if Cas cut up his vegetables for him. “You can handle chopping some veggies, right?”

If Dean lets Cas use his knives, no one needs to know that.

“Don’t cut your finger off, your mom will fire me,” is all the warning Dean heeds once he gets Cas set up with a cutting board and all the vegetables he needs cut up so he can start roasting them. There’s also a bunch of shit that needs to get cut up for the salad he’s making, so Cas has plenty to do if he manages not to slice anything off with Dean’s incredibly sharp knives.

Dean has steaks to prep.

Dean Winchester’s college years felt like the greatest of his life: School came easy, he was the starting first baseman for the KU Jayhawks and he was in love with the smartest, nerdiest, hottest guy in school, who also happened to be his roommate. They were the definition of Relationship Goals. Until they weren’t. Until Cas left. If you asked Castiel Novak why he was back in Lawrence after 10 years, he’d tell you it was because of a great job opportunity. If you knew Castiel, you’d know it was because of Dean Winchester. But Dean had moved on, successfully running his bar, brewing his own beer, tattooed and still the most gorgeous man Castiel had ever laid eyes on. Oh and? He was taken. Dean wants to, but forgiving Cas isn’t easy, and finding their way back to each other after all this time is like searching for a hand in the dark. Sometimes, ten years is ten years too late.

This is one of the most memorable reunion stories that have been permanently inked into my brain! I really experienced a roller coaster of emotions through the well-paced story with chapters seamlessly alternating between a sense of loss and longing between Dean and Cas in the present and fluffy memories of the past showing the friendship between them growing into love. I very much appreciated that we were able to see both of the boys’ points of view from Cas in the present, in which we were privy to his inner fears and emotions by showing up in Dean’s life after ten years, and from Dean in the past, in which the heartache is balanced out with sweet and passionate moments. The flashbacks illustrate the happiness and profound love Dean and Cas have for each other, so we are at a loss trying to figure out what precipitated Cas leaving ten years ago, which will definitely leave you in tears.

I also adored how perfectly Cas fit into Dean’s family and found people who welcomed him into their lives before Cas left. Everyone in their lives were so well characterized, enriching what we learn about Dean’s life and how they treated Cas as a member of their family. Some of the scenes I enjoyed greatly were Jo threatening Cas to defend Dean, protective Sam and his strong relationship with his brother, and Charlie being the ultimate best friend to Dean. Particularly lovely was Ellen and Bobby as parents to Dean and Sam, I also could not stop laughing at how hysterical and fitting Balthazar was portrayed, and he quickly became someone I absolutely adored. However, a warning to potential readers that in the present Dean is dating Aaron, but we get the impression that their relationship is on shaky ground and nothing explicit is described between them. I did feel a bit sorry for Aaron knowing that he could not hold a candle to Cas in Dean’s perspective.

The author writes a story that is full of meaning, such as the beautiful tattoos that are special to Dean, and readers will be in for a treat in the later chapter that ties back to an important moment from Dean’s flashbacks. Another dynamic that readers will be riveted by is that Dean and Cas also communicate through music and that adds further depth to their bond. Closing Time is a story about forgiveness, choice, and family. I have a strong feeling that you will quickly fall in love with this, and this story will become one of your favorites that you will come back to relive the moments between this version of Dean and Cas!

The awkward, hoodie-clad homeless man has already disappeared from his rearview mirror yet something draws Dean back. Maybe it’s the fact that the guy looks lost in more ways than one, or maybe it’s something behind those intense, ocean blue eyes, but either way, Dean can’t leave the guy stranded in the impending downpour. Castiel Novak is running away from his problems. Far away. It’s a decision that made sense at the time, but with his resources running low, no place to stay, and the sky about to rain down on his head, he’s beginning to rethink his life choices. All seems lost until a green eyed local offers him a place to stay dry for the night. This chance meeting between two strangers shifts the course of both their lives in a way that neither could’ve ever expected, and as they struggle to deal with the secrets of their past while navigating their relationship into the future, they come to find that maybe together they’re the perfect storm.

First off, I have to issue a fair warning when it comes to this fic. You will get sucked in and there is a very high risk that you will end up binging this all in one sitting. Like, one very long, start the fic before bed and end up finishing it with the sun rising, type of sitting… you know—the best kind. This is the type of fic you read over, the type you read when you should probably be working, the kind that stays on your mind long after you’ve finished it. 

Drops in the Ocean truly has everything you could love. Dean is incredible in this fic, especially if caretaker!Dean is your thing. He’s relentless in his pursuit to help Cas and give him a place to stay, and you’re rooting for him the entire time, because Cas… well Cas is reluctant and even resistant at times, despite how desperately he wants someone to trust. Cas is in a really hard spot in this fic, and if your heart went out to Season 9 Cas, then this is definitely the fic for you. 

I’ll never stop recommending Drops in the Ocean because not only are Dean and Cas written incredibly well, but so is the entire ensemble cast of characters that we all love, each one written like they just stepped out of canon. Every voice in this fic is clear as day and you’ll enjoy all of the relationships this fic provides which are all fleshed out and written to compliment the story the entire way through. Hello, everyone! A few months ago we reached 1k followers and the blog also turned 1 year old🥳 We didn't do anything back then but now the time has finally come! So starting this Monday (June 26th) and for the next five weeks, the blog will be dedicated to this celebration.

This fic has every single piece of awesomeness in it you could possibly want.  Intellectual Castiel with family drama (twin Jimmy is so not a winner) but a close relationship with his troubled but awesome niece.  Dean has an everchanging rainbow of hair colors and a little pet walking business (and yes, he walks Cas’ pet pig).

Castiel struggles to find his way in the new life he is making in New York, but with the help of his niece and the eccentric bike messenger/pet walker Dean, he settles in, working to reinvent his uncle's bookstore and himself.

Meanwhile, Dean’s got some seriously messed up shit going on with his own family, both John and Sam, and struggles with his history of alcoholism and self-worth issues.  Underneath all of his loveable bravado is a man too scared to trust and too broken to try.  The question is, is Cas enough to do the hard thing for?
