okay but like. cogs turning .. last holiday truthing cwt maxxing… the sheer difference in dialogue between the script and the episode is killing me. the deliberate choices made to change said dialogue and even the ending…

like am I alone in thinking that this whole exchange in the dungeon was very oddly disjointed? very “nobody fucking talks like that” core. they just say shit but it doesn’t land with the other’s response.

and especially when you compare it to the draft:

for some reason or another, the writers deliberately cut out jack’s lamentation that he is still dangerous, that mrs butters is right to be doing what she’s doing, and that nothing has been the same between him and the Winchesters since he’s come back. they deliberately cut out dean saying “you’re one of us, and you have a chance to make it right.”

there’s also the glaring difference between how sam and dean defend jack in the episode vs the draft. in the draft, they say this:

D: “You said you didn’t want to destroy this family, but Jack is our family.”

S: “You hurt him, you hurt us.”

Mrs B: “No, he’s infected you. I have to keep you safe.”

D: “By trying to kill the people we care about?”

Mrs B: “No, he’s a monster!”

D: “Aren’t we all?”

not only do sam and dean say that jack is their family and someone they care about, but they also explicitly hold themselves on the same monster totem mrs butters holds jack to (much like what dean said in tombstone, “we’ve all done things, so if you’re a monster then we are too,”

…which all then gets cut and turned into “He can save the world.” no, don’t kill jack, he’s our family and we care about him and he is good despite his mistakes -> no, don’t kill jack, he can save the world.

the explicit choice to center jack’s worth on his usefulness rather than his inherent value as the winchesters’ family and even just as a person, rlly speaks so much to the way he’s essentially narratively doomed to be dehumanized as a tool/weapon/device.

and the fact that this is all eventually preceded by Cas saying “you never needed absolution from sam or dean or me. we don’t care about you because you’re useful or because you fit into some grand design. we care about you because you’re you,” (which in turn is preceded by jack fitting into a grand design and fucking off to the raindrops forever), makes it seem either a painful inconsistency or some weird twisted inside joke between the writers (cough season 16 cough cough puke).

I haven’t posted about it a lot but I truly think there’s some vast trapped-in-the-narrative horror working around jack constantly being dehumanized both within the show as a living weapon and by the writers themselves as a plot device.

on the flipside of the genre aware Dean coin I've always had this idea that sam is genre-resistant, he is oblivious or disdainful or both. I mean obviously with moments like 'you peed yourself!' or 'there aren't even words in this newspaper dean!' the joke is that he's not participating in Dean's self-conscious vaudeville act. first scene of him as an adult is him telling Jess he doesn't want to dress up for Halloween, he resists being costumed, he doesn't pick the music and all the music he is shown genuinely enjoying the joke is that it's out-of-place, too whiny or modern. his pop culture touchstones don't mesh with the show's very strict aesthetic sensibilities. also in comparison to Dean who is such a chameleon Sam is kind of allergic to pretense. like thinking abt in it's a terrible life where Dean immediately adapts to the contours of his new role vs Sam who is thrashing around like a trapped animal.

The thing that gets me about the Haley 1.02 Wendigo and Dean parallel is that Haley's brother is missing but Haley has TWO brothers and no parents, and Sam is more like the angsty younger brother, Ben. John's parallel is as the older of Haley's two brothers—the missing one—Tommy. And John not being a missing dad and instead being a missing brother is kind of what Dean's life is actually like honestly (in a literal sense, both of Dean's parents aren't dead like Haley's are, but in a metaphorical sense, John as a father died along with Mary). John was Dean's father in terms of authority but in terms of the obligations of a father to his child, those were all deeply warped and even reversed such that Dean was more of an emotional support to John, taking care of him along with Sam (as John himself admits in 2.01 and as is also brought up in 5.16).

the thing about sam my best friend sam is that he is so so so oblivious. i genuinely think he doesn’t find out about dean and cas until maybe seven years after they get together purely because nobody ever outright tells him. this is my truth

dean and cas move in together and sam is like yeah that makes sense because they’re friends and living alone is rough and also cas just died and came back again so of course we’re all feeling a little clingy. about a year in it crosses his mind to ask if deans alright with his confirmed bachelor lifestyle and so he asks if dean is happy and dean says “yeah i’m real good sam” with such obvious affection that sam is like Woah dean is truly happy for the first time ever this is huge. on one occasion he notices that only one bedroom is in use but when he asks cas about it cas is like yes??? of course??? and sam is like (thinking about sharing a room with someone for most of his life and how he finds it comforting to hear someone else’s breathing at night and how this is probably the same for dean) yeah ok that’s not that weird actually. you don’t get sick of dean though? and cas is like. “no”. at a local diner the server asks dean how his partner is doing and dean says cas is doing just fine thanks and sam is like “wow dude i’m really proud of you. twenty years ago something like that would’ve really gotten to you” and this isn’t like a situation where everybody is in on it and hiding it from sam because they think it’s funny this is literally just sam being so incredibly poorly tuned to what dean looks like when he’s in love. everyone else assumes he knows. one time dean calls out honey i’m home when he gets back and sam literally does not bat an eyelid because those are the kinds of jokes dean makes???? i don’t know what exactly tips sam off in the end but i DO know that he has to swear eileen to secrecy about the entire thing because it is too mortifying to admit he was in the dark for seven years and i DO know that the first thing eileen says at the next get together is “sam wants to congratulate you on your new relationship btw” and then he never lives it down ever ever ever

My favorite thing is both extremes of this.

Either Sam is fighting for his life dealing with their cluelessness/fighting for his life dealing with their obnoxiousness (depending on if they have figured it out themselves)

Or Sam is the clueless one and he literally could walk in on them in bed together and still not get it.

I love both scenarios. If there’s ever a reboot/continuation I want one of those two scenarios to be a main running joke.

Why choose? We can have both. Sam fighting for his life dealing with their cluelessness while trying to make them realize they are in love with each other. And when they do and are each other he's the most oblivious one because they were already acting like a couple for years so nothing really changes.

the iconic turning and looking back moment in tmwwbk gets used for orpheus and eurydice parallels pretty often, but really, i think lot’s wife is a much better fit. dean isn’t losing cas in the act of looking back, he’s already lost cas. but he can’t stop caring, so he looks back and lingers when he should be fleeing. when lot’s wife turns, it’s about watching what you love burn because you can’t stand not to see it one last time, you can’t walk away, immobilized by grief. and that’s dean every goddamn time.

when orpheus turns, on the other hand, it’s about losing what you love because you love it too much to pretend you don’t, even if acknowledging it means you lose each other. it’s the brief, blinding moment of joy of love seen and recognized, immediately torn away leaving only silence and absence behind. when cas confesses his love in despair? that’s orpheus turning.

in the world of supernatural, cells like nerve cells and muscle cells that permenantly stay in G0 phase but technically remain in the cell cycle do that so that angels (and other magic users) can force them to undergo mitosis when needed. in the supernatural universe those cells can be taken out of G0 but ONLY when prompted by an angel or smth

also when rebuilding a body all an angel needs is one cell with undamaged DNA. it only needs the sequence of nucleotides and its got it from there. it needs to do the hard work of making stem cells and has to manually differentiate cells into their proper roles. and it is easier to do with more of the body left in tact. but. it can be done

cas can rebuild/help rebuild jimmy novak's body with no cells left over bc he's memorized the DNA sequence. he also has deans memorized bc of how much time he spent rebuilding dean. he is at least partially annoyed at this

angels fucking hate putting together bodies. DNA has a lot of misleading info so parts of the translations need to be cut and spliced. angels, preferring direct and uncomplicated instruction, can not stand this bullshit that organic biology came up with. why on earth would their father do this what was the point

cas took a few tries to get the splicing right. there were a few rough drafts of deans body that did not look anywhere close to right bc he just didnt exactly know what had to be spliced

back when cas didn't necessarily like sam, when he'd heal him, he wouldn't replace lost red blood cells. this is because red blood cells don't have DNA (they need the room for oxygen), so they don't undergo mitosis, and cas wasn't about to differentiate and artificially mature bone marrow stem cells for some guy he doesn't even like. if the wound was severe ok he'll replace enough of them to make sure he'll live. but not one cell more

this would sometimes leave sam lightheaded after losing blood and getting healed. he thought it was a side effect of being angel healed for a while until he mentioned it and dean went "wtf? that's not what I've felt." sam then thought it was the demon blood until cas started actually liking him and, subsequently, going through the effort to replace the red blood cells

there is a much easier way to replace red blood cells, this being some morbius type artificial blood synthesis where angels just make the red blood cells of the proper type out of their chemical components and shove them in the human. cas, a critter not meant to be gentle, did not know or care about this method
