Let me tell you about Moonbase Theta, Out.
Set in 2098, the last moonbase (Moonbase Theta) is being shutdown. The first season follows the 20-week shutdown sequence via short transmissions from the comms officer, Roger Bragado-Fischer. Each episode ends with a short message for Roger's husband Alex, who's waiting for him to come home. The entire first season is about 1h45min long (and there's actually an episode in the feed with the entire combined season to make it easier to listen straight through).
The second season then revisits the exact same timeline, but this time via private personal messages from Roger, his husband Alex, as well as from the four other crewmembers who are helping with the base shutdown. Those crewmembers are:
Nessa Cheong - Agriculture
Ashwini Ray - Astrophysics
Michell L'Anglois - Security
Wilder - Base Maintenance
Tumnus - Dr. Ray's computer (and Artificial Consciousness?)
It's absolutely incredible how much that second season adds to the story, given that we already know what happens. It fleshes out the rest of the crew so much (and without Roger's added biases) as well as gives an added dimension to Roger, and a look at what's going on down on Earth.
The third and fourth seasons carry the story forward from that point, and each season sees the cast growing as the action escalates, both on the Moon and on Earth.
There are also a couple of bonus mini-series (Before the Moon & All Your Base) which give even more context and background into Base Theta crewmembers before they went to the moon, and crewmembers from other moonbases, respectively.
One of the recurring themes throughout the seasons is the poetry exchanged between Roger and Alex. There are lovely and heartbreaking quotes from beautiful poems. There is also some original poetry shared between the two. It adds such a lovely element to the communication between the couple, and is something I haven't really seen in an audio drama so far.
Finally, the thing that I love the most about this podcast is the heart. This show and these characters have so much heart. It's about people connecting and moving forward, despite the obstacles, despite the state of the world, despite the seeming hopelessness.
Other high points: the actors are fantastic, the show is incredibly queer, the locations of focus on Earth are not just in North America or Europe, and capitalism is the enemy.
The fourth season is the final season, and the finale aired on Sept 3rd. Now we're just waiting for the epilogue and a few final bonus episodes before we say goodbye to the story for good (or in my case, start your re-listen for the umpteenth time).
