Carter parents headcanons

(ok so icr everything we plotted wayyyy back when, so idk if any of this conflicts with that but, anyway)

they met in college!!  

or rather @ the college, for some reason I feel like mr. c didn’t go to college but rather worked there as like a maintenance tech or something and mrs. c was constantly having problems w/ her room/bathroom and mr. c was having to come around and fix them

mrs c always felt bad but mr. c didn’t care b/c tbh he honestly had a crush on her since the first time she needed him to fix her sink

mr. c finally decided to ask her out during her junior year

he had this ~perfect date~ set up for them but mrs. c beat him to the punch when she asked him to get some food with her (her treat!) after he’d been working on her a/c for hours

he was exhausted and sweaty and so was she but they had a great time and talked for hours and mrs. c had to pull an all nighter to get all of her homework finished

dated steadily after that

he proposed to her after she graduated

her parents did not approve of him and thought she could do better but she knew that they were only seeing him as an uneducated janitor but she knew he was so much more than that and married him anyway

eventually her parents came around

his were honestly a little weary too, just b/c they had come from two different backgrounds but they treated her like family from day 1

they never had much money but they were very happy and probably should have stopped @ 1 kid but they both wanted lots of children!!!!!!

the night they died, they were going out on a date night for the first time in a long time

their daughters had put together their birthday money and babysitting money and money from the couch cushions to give their parents some time together

it was possibly elizabeth’s plan/idea which could have contributed to why their death seemed to have hit her the hardest

Aaron Donovan + Cass Carter: “do i look like a foot-rest to you?”

“I brought pizza,” Aaron announced.

“Perfect. I brought my appetite.” Cass replied, fluffing the pillows on the couch. “Can you grab the plates from the kitchen.”

“Sure thing.”

Aaron’s tiny motel room was, quite honestly, a piece of shit. The apartment that Cass shared with her sister was tiny and cramped, but it was comfortable. And it had things like multiple rooms and a stove. She hated thinking about Aaron sitting alone in that tiny, smelly cheap motel eating fast food burgers and picking the best channel out of the three options his TV had. So she and Rose invited him to their place whenever they could.

“It’s just me and you. Rose is out.”

“Oh yeah?” He asked, coming back into the living room. “What’s she up to? Studying for finals?”

“Nope. Mike actually convinced her to take a break and I think they are catching a movie. Maybe some dinner.”

Aaron didn’t say anything to that, but she knew he was upset. Or angry. Or jealous. Or something. hHe just had that look — that look he got whenever Mike was around. “Why are you guys so weird with each other?” She asked, as he sat down next to her.

“We aren’t weird with each other.” He said, brushing off her comment. “Hey, you like pepperoni, right?” He asked, but she ignored the question.

“Rose and I swore up and down that you’d be friends. But I see you guys shooting each other death stares when you think we aren’t looking.” She said, teasingly. And then, sitting up, “Wait … is it because of the Bop-It?” She joked. “Oh my god, it is, isn’t it? Remind me to never again try to use that as an ice breaker. Apparently it ruins friendships before they can start.”

He chuckled, but didn’t say anything to that. He looked down at his plate, but he wasn’t eating. It was then that he noticed that she’d put her feet up against his lap. “Hey, do I look like a foot rest to you?” He asked, raising an eyebrow.

She shrugged. “Kind of.” She paused, taking a bite of her pizza. “Also, stop trying to change the subject.”

He exhaled. “It’s not because of the Bop-It.” He said. “I just … i just don’t like the guy. You ever get a bad vibe about someone? I have it about Mike.”

“Well, he’s one of the nicest guys I know.” Cass said, “You should give him a chance. I think he’ll prove you wrong.”

Aaron Donovan & Cass Carter: “it’s just a scratch”

“Door’s open!”

Cass had been to Aaron’s hotel room once before and it had made the crappy two room apartment she shared with her sister look like the presidential suite at the Waldorf. “Okay so I know that this is only temporary until you find a job, but no one should have to live like this, so I’ve brought you some candles, some sheets that have actually been washed in the last ten years, and – “ Cass stopped short when she saw him. He was standing in the bathroom, washing out his shirt that was stained with blood. On his chest there was a fresh wound that had been crudely sewn closed.

He looked just as surprised to see her as she had been to find him like this. Whoever he had been expecting, it hadn’t been her. "Oh, Cass, I – ”

“Aaron? Oh my god, are you okay? What happened? “

He shrugged, "What this? That’s nothing. It’s just a scratch.”

“Did you sew that up yourself?” She asked, raising an eyebrow, “C’mon, you need to get to a hospital.”

“Cass, I’m fine.”

Cass eyed him suspiciously. “Aaron, is there something going on? If there is, you need to to tell me right now. I don’t need details and, frankly, I don’t want them … but if something’s going on, I can’t get caught up in it.”  If she’d only had herself to think of, she would have reacted differently. Aaron had become her closest friend since moving to New York and if he had gotten himself into some kind of trouble, she’d want to help … but she had Rose to think about and she would not let her sister get caught up in the crossfire. She’d been through too much already. All three of them had.

“Everything’s okay, Cass.” He said, “I know it looks bad, but it isn’t. I got hurt on the job. Those saws can be a real bitch if you aren’t careful,” He said, forcing a smirk to lighten the mood, but the tension still hung in the air, “Look, it was a side job … And under the table deal and I don’t have insurance so it’s just easier to do it myself. It’s okay, my uncle, uh, he was a medic and he taught me a few things … in this business it doesn’t hurt to know how to patch yourself up. I promise It looks worse than it is.” He too a step towards her, “Look, Cass, I just want you to know that I care about you both. I’d never do anything to hurt you. Nothing’s wrong, but if it was, I’d tell you, okay?”

Little Secrets | Aaron & Cass

Cass liked summertime in New York. She'd laugh and tell you it was because she could sleep till eleven and eat ice cream for breakfast and not have to worry about going anywhere if she didn't want to. Summer was just around the corner for her: but had been dragged out because of all of the snow days her kids had gotten this winter. 

Even though she was still working, it was summer now: the temperatures were in the 80s and most of the wealthy New Yorkers had abandoned the city for their summers in the Hamptons. 

It was Saturday afternoon and Cass was waiting around for her sister to finish her shift at the coffee shop and then they were going to spend the evening together (Cass had promised that they'd actually go out -- yesterday had been payday, afterall -- and do something more than just stay home and watch Netflix.)

She had spent the morning sitting in the cafe, grading (something she had thought would have taken until Rose got off), but finishing she grabbed a smoothie to go and walked around aimlessly, trying to settle on somewhere to grab lunch when she saw Aaron Donovan.

"Aaron! Hey!" She called. "God, I feel like I run into you all the time," She laughed. "Stalker."

She hadn't seen him since the fiasco that was last weekend's get together. She and Rose would have bet anything that he and Mike Moretti would really hit it off (she did not see their game night concluding with an especially intense round of bop-it). From now on, they vowed to keep their friends separate. 

"Wanna grab some lunch with me?" She asked, "I'm debating getting pizza at Alfonso's or doubling back and grabbing a sandwich, although what I really want is to go to Sam's back in Boston and get some clam chowder."

Okay, but like when they met in the bar, I kinda want him to have said, "I was looking for you, of course." And Cass is just like, "... that's a terrible pick up line." And idk probs teased him about it and later she'll just be like, "...oh, he legit was telling the truth??!?" 

ALSO ALL OF THESE ~JOBS (crying b/c artist ;DD) CAN I INTEREST YOU IN SOME KNIVES. ;DDD But I think either the contractor (OR LOOKING FOR FAMILY CRYING) sound about right?? 

Anyway, we are doing dinner soon-ish, but afterwards do you want me to start them? (unless you think there's anything else we need to figure out first??)

I have very mixed feelings about how to proceed???????? Bc on one hand, I feel like starting out with a rapport makes it easier on rpers ngl hahahaha but on the other hand, how DID they meet??? I think we talked about it. I know at one point we were like, “What if Mike recognized him?” and approached him basically like, “Amateurs might not see you following them, but I do, and I want you to stop” and then the next time Mike saw him, he’d insinuated himself into their circle and was just like, “Nice seeing you again, Moretti,” basically. But we didn’t go with that (my bad) so yeahhhh. I can actually see the reverse happening, though. Like, Aaron notices Mike Moretti seems to know them, so instead of plain following them, he approaches them (or probs just Cass to make things easier for ~comments) and is like, “Let me buy you a drink,” or whatever. And like casually inserts that he’s from Boston and they just kinda start talking or something idk????? Thoughts?

OKAY SO I KINDA LOVE THE IDEA THAT HE NOTICES MIKE AND IS LIKE ~what and basically goes from just watching them (creeper ;) ) to actually being a part of their life. And so I like the idea of them being out one night and Aaron buying Cass a drink and basically I can def see where she'd really like him, especially since he's from Boston and they'd talk about home. <3 So, I feel like they've probably been friends for a couple weeks at this point then? Basically, she knows him well enough to a) invite him to her apartment and b) have him over w/ Mike AND ACTUALLY THINKS THAT THEY WOULD BE FRIENDS, TOO ~CRYING. 

But oh! So, why does Cass think he's in NY, btw? And what does she think he does?

Cassandra “Cass” Carter (23) jennifer lawrence relationships: Sarah Carter, Lucy Hart, Rose Carter (sisters), Mike Moretti (friend)

Cass is the the second youngest of four girls.

When she was eleven years old, her parents were brutally murdered in the subway station. 

Her eldest sister, Sarah, was eighteen at the time and was able to take custody of her sisters.

Her parents’ life insurance policies helped them out some, but life was hard: both financially and emotionally for all of them. 

None of them took it quite as hard as Elizabeth did and when Cass was twelve, Elizabeth ran away.

Cass is currently working as a fourth grade teacher at Midtown West in downtown. 

She started working as a teacher’s aid, but when the fourth grade teacher went on maternity leave, Cass took over on her own. 

Its hard work - and some of the kids are a real handful - but Cass loves her job. 

She is all about encouraging the kids to want to learn and she takes them on field trips as often as the school will let her. 

As soon as she finished college and got a job, Cass moved to New York permanently. Her younger sister, Rose, was also going to school there, so they have had an apartment together for the last two years.

They don’t have a lot of room (or money) but Cass loves her life in New York. She loves her independence and she loves the city, but mostly she likes that it doesn’t remind her so much of all the bad memories. As much as she loves Boston, she’d rather spend her time elsewhere. 

The only thing New York doesn’t have, is Sarah. 

Cass has tried to convince her sister to move, but Sarah is firm: she stays in Boston, but its clear that she wants her sisters home. 

The Carters visit each other all the time, but Cass knows that this won’t be forever — three hours + traffic is too far when you’ve lost as much as the Carters have and eventually she plans to move back to Boston. She thinks that her sister is missing them more than she’ll admit and that solving murders and living alone can’t be good for her.

Cass firmly believes in the “life each day like it’s your last” policy, because heck it just might be. 

She’s also very protective of her sisters, in her own way. Do not mess with them. 

She can be impulsive: she doesn’t believe in planning too much for the future because most likely those plans will fall through anyway. She tends to live in the moment. 

She has a great sense of humor and tends to use it to make boring and awkward situations better (she’s never boring, but sometimes the awkward situations just get worse)

She’s loud and energetic and honestly has no filter.
