The Gem of the Carnival

Castiel Writing Challenge

Prompt: Ferris Wheel

Pairings: Castiel/Dean

Rating: PG

Word Count: 2101

Tags: fluff, destiel, mild panic attack

The lilting music, rambunctious children, and loud incessant games were almost too much for Castiel. He usually enjoyed carnivals but all this was a bit too over- stimulating. He got this summer job working at the carnival because he was rather bored and lonely by himself during summer break. He just ended his junior year of high school a couple weeks ago and the isolation of being an only child had been getting to him so decided to get a job. Even if he didn’t make new friends, at least he would be able to help his parents defray the costs of his college tuition.

Castiel let the cool mid-July evening wind breezed over his face. This was much nicer than it had been a few hours ago. The sweltering heat had made him cranky and he had snapped at one of his co-workers. He had accepted Castiel’s apology later but he still felt a little bad about it.

Castiel’s shift at the guess-your-weight booth had ended so he had left to go start as next station. He would never let his boss know, but he was always purposely a little off when guessing the contestant’s weight. He enjoyed the smile it brought to their faces when he suggested they looked lighter than they were. The schedule had said Castiel was supposed to be manning the ferris wheel so he started heading that way.

The ferris wheel had been the reason Castiel chose to get a job at the carnival. He liked the view he could get from the top. Once he was up there, it made him feel detached from the world in a way that’s different than he’s used to feeling. He feels at peace looking over all the families over the top, almost like no matter how bad the world gets, there would always be something worth protecting, something worth fighting to live for. Castiel knew that was no way for him to protect such innocent children from the horrors of reality, but at the top of the ferris wheel he could almost pretend the carnival was its own little world keeping them safe.

Castiel had lost track of time because of his musings and found himself standing right in front of the ferris wheel. Tall, with beautiful soft yellow lights that made Castiel feel warm on the inside. It was a rather impressive ferris wheel considering this was just some small town carnival that opened up for a couple months every summer. You could ask anyone and they would all agree that the ferris wheel was the gem of the carnival. This is why it was weird that it was completely deserted during the carnival’s busiest hours. The sun was still up but only just about to set, casting the entire carnival in a warm orange glow.

Castiel has seen many years pass by on Earth. Some more remarkable than others. This year however had been the most important year of his life. This was the year he first experienced human emotions. The angel had come to love these new emotions he could now experience: joy, sadness, humor, and something he could still not quite identify. It was a strange thing he felt in the pit of his stomach every time he saw Dean smile or heard him laugh. This feeling was only good unless he was the one to make him to do so, however. He just filed it as a side effect of their profound bond however and didn’t ponder about it much longer.

Christmas passed by swiftly which was disheartening. Castiel much enjoyed Christmas this year. It was the first year the Winchesters decided to whole-heartedly celebrate Christmas. Probably in light of all the evil that surrounds them. Christmas with the Winchesters was easily much more enjoyable than in Heaven. The other Angels did not have that pleasant candy flavored drink called egg nog.

Not much later after Christmas ended New Year’s began.This holiday did not excite Castiel as much as Christmas did. He did not understand the significance the new year held to humans. By this point, the beginning of a new year was like the beginning of a new week for Castiel. He did not understand the cause for celebration.All this holiday did was remind him of the unstoppable passage of time. It did not bother him until he had Sam and Dean, people he could truly call family.

Sam and Dean suggested that they celebrate the holiday for real. Castiel agreed because he would do anything for Sam and Dean. “Come on Cas,” Dean had said, “this is the perfect opportunity for you to loosen up and really have fun. Plus, we’ll be able to drink rich people booze.” And now this is why Castiel is sitting on a couch surrounded by noisy partiers at a party in a nice home Dean convinced them to crash with him, to ring in the New Year.

Castiel watched all the loud rambunctious people surrounding him, guzzling down alcohol in celebration, with a tinge of regret at another year gone by underneath all their rowdy celebrating. Castiel downed the shot Dean had presented in front of him, though alcohol had little affect on him.

Castiel sips at his flute of champagne, surveying the room from his place away from all his coworkers. They all mingle in the center of the ballroom of the hotel, laughing and smiling. Waiters float between them, carrying trays of finger foods and more champagne; it’s a good year, bubbly and smooth on his tongue.

Castiel has never liked champagne.

“Hey, you,” a warm voice says, and Castiel jumps slightly at the arm sliding around his waist. He smiles when he realizes it’s Dean, and leans into his fiancé.

“Hello, Dean.”

“Hiding out in the dark isn’t usually your style,” Dean points out with a smirk; he brings his own flute up and chugs half of it in one go. He smacks his lips together and grimaces. “Wow, and people actually drink that stuff because they like it, ugh. So what are you doing creeping around back here?”

Shoe Box Full of Memories

It wasn’t a scrapbook, or a cute little decorative album bursting at the seams, or even picture frames gloriously lining a fireplace mantle. No, what Castiel had was a shoe box. It was worn at the edges, the cardboard soft from the years that it has held the fallen angel’s entire world in its confines. It wasn’t stored in a safe or placed in a glass case like a treasure; it was kept underneath his bed where his head laid at night.

The shoe box wasn’t filled to the brim; the lid was easy enough to close. When picked up, it didn’t weigh more than a hardcover novel. Sometimes dust collected in the little dip of the lid. It could lay in wait for weeks under their bed without being touched.
