For all that I complain, it actually doesn’t bother me so much when I look up an item on some online retailer and suddenly all the ads I see on every site are about that item – I mean, they’re all running the same ad network anyway, so that level of targeting doesn’t even require data sharing or a unique profile, just the ability to recognise an IP address.

No, what really concerns me is when I buy an item in person, at a store at which I have no registered customer profile, using cash, and I immediately start getting online ads about that item. Like, rationally I know that often it’s coincidence, and even when it isn’t, for many common items basic predictive modelling is going to tell them approximately how often I need to restock without the need for any direct monitoring, but there’s still a part of me that seriously considers investing in aluminum foil.
