Story time! When I used to do wildlife rehab volunteering, the clinic director once told me something that happened to him at another wildlife clinic where he previously worked. He was there late one evening, finishing paperwork after everyone else had left. The room was mostly dark, and he was focused on his task, when he hears a soft, strange voice from behind him.

“I see you!”

He jumped and spun around, but there was nobody there. Just a bunch of covered cages with mostly-sleeping injured birds. He double-checked that the room was secure, then tried to go back to work. 

“I see you!” the voice said again. But once again, there was nobody else in the room. At this point, many genre-savvy people would have noped the heck out of there and possibly called a priest and/or the Ghostbusters.

Fortunately, this guy happened to remember that the clinic had recently taken in a starling, which didn’t seem as afraid of people as most wild birds. He knew that starlings could theoretically speak, though he’d never heard one do so. He checked the starling’s cage and found it awake. After a bit of observation, he caught it saying “I see you!”

Presumably this starling had previously been somebody’s pet before it escaped or was turned loose and got itself hurt. Back around people, it chose the creepiest possible time to bust out one of its phrases. No paranormal crisis, just an invasive species with a hidden talent.
