Yesterday was the Mid-Autumn Festival and I finally drew the crossover I’ve been gushing about on Discord a year ago :D
Info dump ahead:
I used to be one of those bookworms with a fixation on mythology, namely ones from China since my mom never told me these stories from our culture.
My favorite story was about how the Mid-Autumn festival came to be. To abbreviate, the skilled archer, Hou Yi, saved humanity from dying of heat exhaustion by shooting down nine of ten suns.
This eventually caused a series of events that led to his wife, Chang’e, unintentionally becoming the Goddess of the Moon and unable to return back home.
The gods took pity on the star-crossed couple and decided to allow them an annual reunion on the full moon of the eighth lunar month. Hence, the creation of the Mid-Autumn Festival to celebrate this.
Here’s a link to the full story if anyone is interested: here
How does this relate to Hattercrow? Spoiler alert in the story: the fallen suns were turned into three legged crows (sanzuwu) and Chang’e has a pet bunny (the Jade Rabbit), who makes potions for the heavenly beings.
They also happened to be representations of the Sun and Moon, respectively.
So I drew Johana as a humanized sanzuwu and Janis as the Jade Rabbit in the Tang Dynasty fashion.
To summarize, I had loved this story way before I got into Hattercrow but once I got invested, I was immediately reminded of my childhood.
Hope you enjoy this long post and art.
Have a bonus sketch of their animal counterparts. :)
