"You hear that? They're saying The Odyssey doesn't even have nobody!"
"They've got nobody in the Odyssey?"
"No I'm saying they don't got nobody."
"Nobody's there?"
"Nobody's not there!"
"So everyone's there?"
"Everybody but nobody!"
it's kind of crazy climate change has occurred at such a remarkable pace that I and everyone else around my age can remember a completely different climate in our childhoods. I truly watched winter gradually disappear in my life.
"You're too young to remember this, but there used to be so many insects outside that you would have to clean them off the windshield after a long car ride" is the kind of sentence that would have been in a cheesy scifi short story earlier in my life, perhaps submitted to a literary magazine and accepted to show support for its environmentalist message - now it's something I've said in earnest.
always some new bullshit in the ocean
Why is it always orcas or dolphins
Why can't a salmon do some bullshit for once

Context for anyone who is wondering: Lamine Yamal's parents won an UNICEF raffle for a charity photoshoot in which Barça players posed with kids, and 5 month old Lamine happened to get 20yo Messi. Which is like. Literally insane
a few doors down from me my neighbors have a squirrel bar nailed to the tree in front of the sidewalk, not exactly this but something like this:
it's been there for years and they never "stock" it so it's just sitting there. anyway, i thought it would be cute to make a little squirrel out of sculpey and leave it on one of the stools in the middle of the night. i also made a little sculpey beer bottle with its own label.
it lasted exactly one day and now it is gone. it didn't fall off, i stuck it on with tape. what do you think happened to it? your most fantastical and wrong answers only, please
HUGE NEWS HUGE UPDATE
squirrel REAPPEARED today... NOW PAINTED
i wanted to provide another update because there has been more activity at the nut bar
a few weeks ago i sculpted a new patron:
and put him in the bar. the next day he was gone. a couple weeks later he reappeared painted... but with ANOTHER new guest: a 3D printed squirrel based on the first one i sculpted (with a bottle!)
:)
The whole photo is gold but I especially like that the automated feeder is taped to the fucking floor.

“Omg, I love these! They go up to size 6X AND they have pockets?! Wow!! But do you have anything longer?”
Sure do, no problem!!
“YES these are great!!! But what about.. longer?”
I gotcha!! Comin’ right up!
"Now that's what I'm talkin' about! But... how about if I'm feeling like it's the kinda day where I need my clothing to be bifurcated???"
Never fear, joggers are here!

Also people being obsessed with Greek mythology as kids wasn’t invented by Percy Jackson. My dad read the Iliad and the odyssey in high school because one of his friends was super obsessed with Ancient Greek lit and he was like “well I can’t let him be smarter and more well read than I am I’ve gotta catch up”
Moment of silence for all the centuries of Greek mythology enjoyers who didn’t have online databases of fragments and different translations and had to physically hunt down the texts at libraries.
Also shoutout to Princess Anna Comnena one of the first known woman historians for sneaking into the archives at night to read the epics because her family thought they weren’t appropriate for women. Dedication.
Can't stop thinking about this post I saw a couple days ago that was proposing this kind of... sanitation work jury duty, where everyone would just be garbage men for one day a year because no one should have to work with garbage as their actual job.
I can't help but think about:
A) How much training it probably takes to even be able to operate a garbage truck, much less all the safety stuff in case someone decided to dispose of their used needles or broken glass or whatnot in a standard garbage bin. I get stressed out driving my silly little sedan. I don't want to think about how much of a hazard I'd be to myself and everyone around me on my 'garbage collector day.'
B) The number of specialists it takes to even make a place for the garbage to go. Like. You need so much stuff, so many specialists, just to make sure water runoff from the landfill isn't contaminating the groundwater. It's not a one and done thing, and that's a tiny almost tangential part of dealing with garbage.
C) That some people actually do want to work in sanitation, and that part of the point of a society is that you can trade around jobs to make things easier for everyone.
I don't know, it's like people only look at the very surface layer of something, and think that's all there is to it, or that there's only the part that they, personally, participate in.
There are a couple people in the tags saying that customer service should be the 'jury duty job' instead, and I can't help but feel like some of my point is being missed. Like, my main point was definitely 'don't undervalue sanitation work,' but I feel like 'jobs require training' and 'some people like the jobs you would hate' were strong secondary points.
I had a reblog of that post sitting in my drafts while I tried to figure out what I wanted to say that wasn't just fuck off.
Here's the screenshot
Like, tell me you think sanitation work is a low skill/no skill thing without saying you think sanitation work is a low skill/no skill thing. Fuck offfff.
I rode along with a bin lorry crew for a two week temp job a few years ago. I had to note down any house that had a non-standard sized wheelie bin or more than one of each of rubbish, recycling and organic waste bins. Over time the routes that the different crews took had changed from being roughly equal to taking massively different times to complete, and the bin count was part of the data that would be used to work out new routes that took equal time. So I got to see first hand how skilled these crews are. They work fast and efficiently, they know the idiosyncrasies of the routes, the traffic bottlenecks, how to navigate tiny London streets with a giant fucking truck. They do it well because they are experienced from doing it every goddamn day.
The very idea that "each of us would have to do sanitation work for about one day every seven years" makes my blood boil from the ignorance and dismissal of the skilled people who do that job and do it well.
No industry, whether it's sanitation or farming or customer service could possibly function with every employee essentially being on the first day of the job every day. They are all skilled occupations and skills come from training and experience.
Also worth saying: the guys I spent two weeks with liked their job. The hours suited them, the physical aspect of the work suited them. I, personally, would not have survived another week of getting a bus at 5:20am every day without having a breakdown, and they would not have lasted more than two weeks in an office job working on spreadsheets all day.
I really hope the driver of the crew I was with still enjoys breeding parrots in his spare time.
I am honestly baffled when people say, "Who would want to do a sanitation job" because... in a better world? Honestly? A lot of people???
You tell me how many people wouldn't want a job that:
A) Takes them right out of high school
B) Teaches them everything they need to learn on the job, so they can
C) Be employed there for their whole lives, while
D) Getting well paid with benefits and
E) Working in safe conditions?
Yes, sanitation work can be disgusting, but people can handle disgusting. It is all the surrounding awfulness, like low pay and hazardous conditions, and low social status, that makes it actually horrible.
Who would want to work sanitation in an utopia? Plenty of fucking people, if we make it worth their time.
Kids sitcom about a group of friends where all of them are a part of secret magical or superhero based underground society that don’t know about each other and they all think that the others are ignorant normies that they have to protect from their magical shenanigans.
The witch kid, the superhero sidekick, the cryptid hunter, and the half fairy kid are all unknowingly trying to hide the same talking cat from the principal of their school and the talking cat doesn’t tell any of them about each other because it’s currently getting many extra helpings of treats in exchange for its silence.
During the episode where they all find out about each other’s secret lives there’s obviously a slow look over to the cat who’s like “well you never asked. Anyways, completely unrelated but I’ve gotta go.”
As more seasons pass, it's eventually revealed the rich kid who bullies the main cast is secretly child of some dark lord all the societies fear and eventually the bully works with the main cast to defeat them in the series finale or movie
