2026 is the roughest year my small clothing store has had⦠maybe ever.
i donāt want to go into the nitty gritty of it all or try to dissect all the many things that have gone wrong because iāve already done that and no amount of missteps that iāve personally made rival the Big Reason We All Know: iām an indie artist and designer that is dedicated to creating size inclusive, ethically made clothing in a world that seems determined to make that impossible for someone who is not already independently wealthy.
i havenāt talked about this publicly until now, but this year devin and i had to take substantial pay cuts just to keep the business running. we even skipped a few paychecks and seriously cut into our savings to make sure the business survived, and itās still a struggle.
money is tight for everyone (me included) and the online attention economy is the worst itās ever beenāand for a small business that relies almost entirely on internet word-of-mouth to makes sales and pay the bills, that is a disastrous combination.
iāve honestly reached a point where i feel bad even trying to post about my store because of how bad things are. it feels wrong to try to sell non-essential items in a world that is so hard. even if i love and believe in them. even if i know they are a net positive in the world.
everyone deserves clothing that makes them look and feel good, and that was made to last by people who were properly compensated to make it, regardless of their size. that is my core ethos running this store, and thatās what keeps me going. because i love and believe in what i do, even when itās a struggle.
it feels silly, sometimes, to have so many big feelings about clothingābut i guess itās normal to care about something that has made up the majority of your life for an entire decade.
i donāt really know where iām going with this. a more astute sales person would probably include some photos of their wares at the end with a call to action and a link to their store, but right now even thinking about doing that here makes me feel gross.
i guess during a time when i feel so pressured to Get Over My Feelings and be a salesperson i want at least one moment that is just for my feelings.
āOmg, I love these! They go up to size 6X AND they have pockets?! Wow!! But do you have anything longer?ā
Sure do, no problem!!
āYES these are great!!! But what about..Ā longer?ā
I gotcha!! Cominā right up!
"Now that's what I'm talkin' about! But... how about if I'm feeling like it's the kinda day where I need my clothing to be bifurcated???"
Never fear, joggers are here!

Context for anyone who is wondering: Lamine Yamal's parents won an UNICEF raffle for a charity photoshoot in which BarƧa players posed with kids, and 5 month old Lamine happened to get 20yo Messi. Which is like. Literally insane
Can't stop thinking about this post I saw a couple days ago that was proposing this kind of... sanitation work jury duty, where everyone would just be garbage men for one day a year because no one should have to work with garbage as their actual job.
I can't help but think about:
A) How much training it probably takes to even be able to operate a garbage truck, much less all the safety stuff in case someone decided to dispose of their used needles or broken glass or whatnot in a standard garbage bin. I get stressed out driving my silly little sedan. I don't want to think about how much of a hazard I'd be to myself and everyone around me on my 'garbage collector day.'
B) The number of specialists it takes to even make a place for the garbage to go. Like. You need so much stuff, so many specialists, just to make sure water runoff from the landfill isn't contaminating the groundwater. It's not a one and done thing, and that's a tiny almost tangential part of dealing with garbage.
C) That some people actually do want to work in sanitation, and that part of the point of a society is that you can trade around jobs to make things easier for everyone.
I don't know, it's like people only look at the very surface layer of something, and think that's all there is to it, or that there's only the part that they, personally, participate in.
There are a couple people in the tags saying that customer service should be the 'jury duty job' instead, and I can't help but feel like some of my point is being missed. Like, my main point was definitely 'don't undervalue sanitation work,' but I feel like 'jobs require training' and 'some people like the jobs you would hate' were strong secondary points.
I had a reblog of that post sitting in my drafts while I tried to figure out what I wanted to say that wasn't just fuck off.
Here's the screenshot
Like, tell me you think sanitation work is a low skill/no skill thing without saying you think sanitation work is a low skill/no skill thing. Fuck offfff.
I rode along with a bin lorry crew for a two week temp job a few years ago. I had to note down any house that had a non-standard sized wheelie bin or more than one of each of rubbish, recycling and organic waste bins. Over time the routes that the different crews took had changed from being roughly equal to taking massively different times to complete, and the bin count was part of the data that would be used to work out new routes that took equal time. So I got to see first hand how skilled these crews are. They work fast and efficiently, they know the idiosyncrasies of the routes, the traffic bottlenecks, how to navigate tiny London streets with a giant fucking truck. They do it well because they are experienced from doing it every goddamn day.
The very idea that "each of us would have to do sanitation work for about one day every seven years" makes my blood boil from the ignorance and dismissal of the skilled people who do that job and do it well.
No industry, whether it's sanitation or farming or customer service could possibly function with every employee essentially being on the first day of the job every day. They are all skilled occupations and skills come from training and experience.
Also worth saying: the guys I spent two weeks with liked their job. The hours suited them, the physical aspect of the work suited them. I, personally, would not have survived another week of getting a bus at 5:20am every day without having a breakdown, and they would not have lasted more than two weeks in an office job working on spreadsheets all day.
I really hope the driver of the crew I was with still enjoys breeding parrots in his spare time.
I am honestly baffled when people say, "Who would want to do a sanitation job" because... in a better world? Honestly? A lot of people???
You tell me how many people wouldn't want a job that:
A) Takes them right out of high school
B) Teaches them everything they need to learn on the job, so they can
C) Be employed there for their whole lives, while
D) Getting well paid with benefits and
E) Working in safe conditions?
Yes, sanitation work can be disgusting, but people can handle disgusting. It is all the surrounding awfulness, like low pay and hazardous conditions, and low social status, that makes it actually horrible.
Who would want to work sanitation in an utopia? Plenty of fucking people, if we make it worth their time.
The Oregon Zoo has released more than 1,300 Oregon silverspot caterpillars to coastal habitats in a major effort to bolster the threatened b
This is really exciting news from my corner of the world! The Oregon silverspot (Speyeria zerene hippolyta) is a highly endangered subspecies of the zerene fritillary that is only found in northern California and Oregon, and once ranged in extreme southwestern Washington. It is found in coastal meadows, most of which have either been developed, or closed in by forest due to repression of natural and cultural fires.
The silverspot is an excellent example of how insect herbivores tend to have very limited diets. Plants don't want to be eaten, so they produce chemicals that deter and poison herbivores that eat them. It takes a long time and many generations for an animal species to develop a tolerance for these chemicals, so insect herbivores usually only manage to overcome a small number of toxins. Some species, like the silverspot caterpillar, can only eat the leaves of a single species of native plant, and if that plant disappears, so does the insect.
This also illustrates that "save the pollinators" isn't as simple as planting some flowers for adult butterflies and moths. You have to also consider what the caterpillars will eat, and around here planting a bunch if butterfly bush or other non-native species isn't going to cut it. If you aren't feeding the caterpillars, you certainly aren't going to get the butterflies.
Why preserve a single species that is so dependent on one other species? Well, for one thing, every species deserves to exist regardless of whether we consider them to be useful to us or not. Moreover, when we preserve habitat for these isolated species, we also preserve habitat for many others who live in the same place. And we ultimately know very little about the intricate connections species have among each other; when we lose a single species, we have no idea how far-reaching the negative impacts will be across the entire ecosystem.
So while it may seem like a waste of resources to breed and reintroduce the caterpillars of one butterfly species, the potential benefits across the board are more than worth it.

Dungeon crawling game set in a domain where the law of the land states that all hoards, troves, sacred relics, cursed rings, talking swords, and other unclaimed treasures are the property of the Crown, with the retrieving party being entitled only to a modest finder's fee, and also it uses XP-for-gold advancement specifically pinned to the percentage of retrieved articles' value the character in question is able to legally claim; much of play thus consists of fabricating legitimate-seeming provenances for retrieved treasures in order to obscure the fact that they were pried out of a dungeon and thereby defraud the King.
(No, this is not "yet another tax fraud premise". Circumventing state ownership of unclaimed hoards is a different thing ā more forgery and less math, for one!)
The 'ingredients you can pronounce means it's healthy' line implies a world in which the kind of nutrition a person requires scales with their biology education and grasp of phonics. Which isn't true, of course, but sure would imply some interesting worldbuilding if it were
