i think it's disingenuous to say mothpool is the only reason mothwing is widely interpreted as a lesbian by the fandom. obviously she's one of the few main female characters who never canonically expresses interest in a man, but i also think a big part of why the fandom took to that reading so swiftly and easily because her starclan baggage, a central part of her character btw, has a lot of parallels with a narrative about being in the closet. the emphasis on her having a secret that she can't tell anyone because she knows it will fundamentally change the way people see her and she'll be looked down upon, hawkfrost using her fear of being outed to blackmail her and threatening to tell everyone what she is if she doesn't comply, and, yes, the one person she feels safe confiding in, who she's closer with and respects the opinion of more than anyone else, being another woman, one from a different walk of life that she's not expected to be close with at that- like. it's not just the evil lesbian fandom shippers reducing her character to shipping or whatever lol it is very easy to understand why people interpret her as a lesbian and consider it a very important aspect of their interpretation of her if you think about it for more than two seconds and her relationship with leafpool is just part of it
