Don’t get me wrong, Providence is a pretty great place but I do kind of miss the surf back home.

Don’t get me wrong, Providence is a pretty great place but I do kind of miss the surf back home.
“I used to surf pretty often when I lived in California, I mean skateboarding is rad, too, but it’s not the same.”
“ Right, but how can you think that’s even a little bit true? Obviously mermaids can’t reveal themselves because they’re like, way cooler than humans are and they’ve got these beautiful tails and, I mean, obviously humans are bastards and we’d see that flashy tail and think, ‘Whoa, yeah, I could make a bitchin’ purse out of that’. Or, ‘oh hey, I’ve got that pool out in the backyard, let’s plop her in and charge five bucks a head to come have a look’. It’s self-preservation. They’re hiding because they’re real and they’d like to stay that way rather than end up on a take-out menu. Obviously. ”
“But all I want is a cute mermaid girlfriend, why are you so insistent on taking that away from me? You’re killin’ all my hopes and dreams, here.”
“ you’re such a dick. my best friend is a dick. who knew? ” teasing cato came so naturally to winnie, almost as if it were second nature. “ you’re just using that as an excuse to be lazy. i am so disappointed in you. i’ll be over sometime soon with baskets of ingredients. we’re cooking and kicking this laziness while it’s young. ”
“Those are some harsh words coming from someone so small.” Cato enjoyed the banter with his friend, and frankly he’d missed it. “If by we you mean you then by all means. Come over, make friends with my mom. It’ll be fun.”
“ wholeheartedly. i want all the details. ”
“I’ll be sure to keep you in the loop then, friend.”
“This was then. I know the way.” She smiled as she began walking in the direction of their destination. “It’s nice to meet you Cato, I’m Sydney.” She introduced with a laugh. “So, what’re we gonna’ do if this guy doesn’t have a home to go back too?”
Cato nodded in the woman’s direction, a smile across his lips. “Probably take him myself, hide him from my mom for a while until I find a place so I can move out. This guy’s kinda growin’ on me, and honestly the thought of him having somewhere to be is making me sad.”
The man seemed unfazed by her sassy attitude which annoyed Isla a little bit. She would probably feel bad - only slightly, of course - and try to be nice to him if he was already angry. But he didn’t pay any attention at all. “It actually is.” she admitted with a nod but her smirk was still present. “Do I enjoy it? I don’t know. I’m actually trying this new thing called ‘being nice’. Quite frankly, I’m failing.” she chuckled.
“You are? I don’t know if I’ve seen it yet,” Cato mused quietly, wondering what this woman’s angle was. It wasn’t in people’s nature to be rude for no reason, so he tried to think of why she could act like this.
“If you say so, I’ll just have to take your word for it. Even though I still don’t believe it.”
“Is this your oh-so subtle way of you asking me to prove it to you?”

“ was that shade? are you trying to throw shade at me, hayes? ” winnie couldn’t help the laugh that fell from her lips, her head shaking in playful disappointment. “ you know, you really are lazy. i’m sure you’re fully capable of cooking and doing your own laundry. you are absolutely ridiculous, you know that? ”
“It might be, you can’t prove anything,” Cato chuckled, a smile along his lips. “Woah now, I did everything for myself for like, a solid four years, excuse me for wanting to take a break, missy. You’re the one that’s ridiculous.”
“Everyday is arm day.”
“I mean, I believe you, just look at those guns. I thought I’d need to buy a ticket to see those things.”
“And just who are you trying to convince of that? Me, or yourself?”
“Hey I don’t need to convince anybody, I’ve heard the reviews myself.”
How weird that I don’t think we’ve ever run into each other. Though I did move to Rhode Island shortly after I graduated high school. That’s totally understandable. It does suck being alone after a while. Maybe a roommate is what you should look for instead. I’m sure there are plenty of people around who are looking? Hell even I wouldn’t mind a roommate.
“Well I moved from Rhode Island pretty much when I graduated, so we probably just missed each other. I’m not by myself now, though. My mom does all the hard stuff for me, which is pretty cool. A break is always sweet, and when I start feeling like a burden I’ll probably look for a new place.”
❛ good !! if you need any help with doing that i’d be more than happy to help ❜
“You wouldn’t mind doing that?”
“ me? rude? that’s preposterous. ” winnie shook her head, dismissing his excuses. “ phones work two ways. who’s the rude one now? ” winnie pulled her arm back from cato’s frame, busying herself with finger-combing her unkempt waves. in her defense, she was only going for a walk and didn’t anticipate an impromptu reunion. “ why not? it’s really pretty here, and not all the people are idiotic or assholes or a combination of the two. ” her eyes rolled at his final comment. “ i don’t think i’ll ever be too good for anywhere. but, i mean, i will agree to some extent. i am pretty important. you, on the other hand, ” she proposed with a grin, “ are definitely too good for this tiny state. ”
“Hey, I’m not the one accusing people of not tweeting at me or whatever.” Cato shrugged, his tone still light and teasing. He didn’t know if she was talking about him being the exception to the rule, but he was going to take it like that anyway. “Me?” He questioned with a laugh. “I’m not too good for anything. I needed some time off to myself and couldn’t think of anywhere better to go than home. My mom’s been cooking for me and doing my laundry again, it’s awesome.”
“ the one and only, ” winnie teased, rocking lightly on her heels. “ well, i suppose i should hug you back — otherwise, it’s just awkward, ” she shrugged, proceeding to wrap an arm around cato and allow herself to be tugged into his side. “ i am honestly offended that you never took the time to tweet me and inform me of this development, ” she spoke sarcastically, giving the boy a light squeeze. “ i moved when i got tired of my dad’s shit. my mom left me quite a bit, so as soon as i blew out eighteen candles, i was gone. ”
“You better fricken hug me back, don’t be rude,” Cato teased, a smile still spread across his lips. It had been way too long since he’d seen his friend, and he hadn’t noticed just how long it had been until this moment. “I barely tweet, I have too much to say in a hundred and forty characters or less, Win. Besides, you coulda text me when you moved out here. Some pot callin’ the kettle black nonsense going on here.” Pausing for a moment, Cato adjusted the cat in his arms again. “So like, why Providence? I thought you of all people would be too good for Rhode Island.”
