Part A - Gareth Nicholls
Last Wednesday (the 9th of October) Gareth Nicholls came to the Toonspeak offices to direct a performance workshop. Gareth was the director of Educating Ronnie and it was really fun having him here.
Throughout the workshop we wrote about a journey, before going into partners then adapting the journey and adding in fantasy moments and thoughts and feelings that we had throughout that journey.
Part D - Sharing my Skills.
Last Wednesday (23rd October) I held a workshop dedicated to Writing and character development. My workshop was influenced by Jodie Marshall the play-write I worked with a couple of weeks ago.
To start off the workshop I got everyone to think of there favorite fairy stories and write them down on a sheet of paper, I did this to get everyone ready for the workshop, for them to understand what it would be about and to ensure they would be interested in what I would be doing throughout the workshop. The next thing I did was told my participants (Jamie, Connor and Marc) the fairy story 'Cinderella' without mentioning any names or what the story actually was. Of course they could tell straight away what the story was, but it got them more interested in my workshop and excited to do more. The next I did was, I got them to write on a sheet of paper the different ingredients in a story - as you can see above - This not only got them interested in what it's like to write a story but also got them interested in character building and how they would write their own story. After we did this I set up a 'game' on which they were each given 4 sheets of paper - each a different colour - and told them to write down a character from famous and well-loved children's story's but instead of writing down the main character's I got them to write down character's from their own imagination who weren't included in the famous stories. The stories I got them to use were Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Peter Pan and Rapunzel.This activity got them to use their imaginations and really start to develop their character's giving them back stories and personalities although they weren't really fully developed yet. Next I got them to start to link character's up and I told their character to pick one of the other character's they liked and one of they character's they disliked. This got them to really delve into who their character's are and gave their character's personalities and thoughts and feelings and really started bringing them to life. After this I got them tow rite down on a sheet of paper, the structure of a story and what is involved in a story. This got them even more interested in different types of stories you can get and how you can use this type of structure in almost everything. Finally I got them to write down a short story/paragraph of their character making sure to include:
Who They Were
What Type of Person they were
What their past was like
How they would deal with things in different situations
Age, Looks, Personality.
In reflection I thought I did really well with my arts share and was really happy with the way it turned out. Even though I was quite nervous, I kept it hidden and acted confident and eventually did relax making the workshop even better. I was really happy that I got the participants interested in story writing and character building. After looking back at the comments the participants made I was really happy with how well they enjoyed, the only negative comment I got was to have more movement involved and even at that I had instantly recognised what I would have to do to improve the next time. So overall I am very happy with my Arts Share and very happy with the fact that I made people interested in one of my favorite parts of the arts.
In fact I got my participants to give me some feedback, here is what they said:

Part C - My Arts Heroine(2)
Joanne 'Jo' Rowling was born, July 1965 at Yate General Hospital in England and grew up In Chepstow, Gwent.
She left Chepstow for Exeter University and studied there before finally achieving a French and Classics Degree.
After University she moved to London and worked as researcher for Amnesty International (A charity that looks into Human Rights abuse in Francophone, Africa)
The idea for Harry Potter came to JK Rowling on a delayed train ride from Manchester to London, she says it just popped into her head, the idea of a boy who's and a wizard and doesn't know and goes to a magic school. While on the train she started thinking of teachers, subjects, the school, different magical concepts and everything else that is included in the Harry Potter world in this present time.
JK Rowling is the founder of a charity called Lumos (Which is also a spell in the Harry Potter books) which works to transform the lives of disadvantaged children.

Something I find extremely inspiring about JK Rowling is that at one point in her life she was richer than the Queen of England, but lost that status because of how much money she gave away to charity.

Before all of this had happened and she achieved her Billionaire Status there was a lot of hardhsip JK Rowling went through.
When JK Rowling was 25 her Mother died from Sclerosis and this affected her in a large way. After her Mother's death, Rowling moved to Portugal were she got married and had a child. The Marriage lasted 13 months and 1 day before she finally left taking her child, Jessica, with her.
The small family moved to Scotland where they were barely living off of Welfare, Rowling was also Clinically Depressed and hardly surviving.
Jk Rowling described her living conditions as "As poor as you can get without being Homeless"

When Did you first want to be a writer?
Always...as soon as I knew what writers were, I wanted to be one. I've got the perfect Temperament for a writer; perfectly happy alone in a room, making things up.
Have you always wanted to be a book author?
Yes. I know that I wanted to be a writer when I was six because I wrote a book then. It was a work of towering genius about a rabbit. I gave it to my Mother and she said, "That's lovely," as a mother would."That's very, very good,". I stood there and thought, "Well, get it published then". That's a bit of an odd thing for a child of six to think. I don't know were it came from.

One of JK Rowling's ideals in the Harry Potter books was to give the idea that love beats all, whether that be love between family or love between 2 people of the same gender or love between a male and a female.
She makes this clear with Lilly Potter (Evans) Harry's mother, who died for her son. Because of how strong the love was between Mother and Child, Harry survived the Killing Curse 'Avada Kadavra'. Also the love between Molly and Arthur Weasley, who's love was so strong that they had survived through 2 Wizarding wars and had 7 children. Or even when it was revealed that Albus Dumbledore was revealed to be gay. It is clear the one of the things JK Rowling value's most is love, whether that be between Harry, Ron and Hermione or Lilly and James Potter.
Another thing I love about JK Rowling is the strong sense of pride she has for her gender and being female, she shows this through the books with strong female character's such as Hermione Granger, Professor Mcgonnogal, Luna Lovegood and Fluer Delacour. Personally Hermione has always been a character I have admired and aspired to be like and JK Rowling also identify's some of her own traits in Hermione.

Part C - My Arts Heroine(1)
For my Arts Hero or Heroine, I have Chosen Joanne 'Jo' Rowling, otherwise know as JK Rowling. Author of The Harry Potter Series, Casual Vacancy and The Cuckoo's Calling.
The reason I have chosen her is because she is such an inspiration to me and has been since I first picked up The Philosopher's Stone.
The reason I find JK Rowling so inspirational is because she never gave up. When trying to get the first Harry Potter book published she was turned down by a whopping 12 publishing company's who said there was no way the books would appeal to anyone.
Finally on her 13th try she was able to get her book published but was advised to keep her gender a secret because the book was supposed to appeal to boy's and if it was written by a female author there was a large chance it wouldn't appeal to them.
Of course her gender isn't an issue at all and she shouldn't have hidden it in the first place, this is proven when soon after the book was published a lot of photograph's were taken revealing her real gender and everyone still loved it. In fact it may have made the book even more popular and as well as appealing to Boy's appealed to girl's as well.
For me as a young teenage girl who is proud of her gender and who I am, I found it quite surprising and unnecessary for her to hide her gender, because why should JK Rowling have to hide who she really is? Even just the name of the book - Harry Potter - gives the idea that the book is based upon a male character and this would appeal to boy's. Gender shouldn't have been an issue when it came to publishing because it has been proven that JK Rowling was still as - maybe even more - successful as the publisher's hoped she would be.
I also find the distances she has traveled and hardships JK Rowling has been through really inspirational.
For my research I used the internet and specifically JK Rowling's official website, which gave me all the information I needed and more.I also watched an old interview JK Rowling had with Oprah after just finishing the Deathly Hallows. When researching JK Rowling I found out what she went through and what she has won throughout her years of writing.

Part A - Stanislavski
Stanislavski was a Russian actor and theatre director, in the late 19th century and early 20th century. His work, after so many years, still influences actors and performers around the world. He is sometimes described as the first really prominent theatre practitioner.
His work is used so much because he created a system of teaching acting through a variety of techniques and disciplines. His Techniques are:
The Magic If
Given Circumstances
Imagination
Emotional Memory
Super Objective and Through Line.
The ones we used the most were Given Circumstances, Imagination and Emotional Memory.
Given Circumstances are all the factors that affect a person and there thoughts and actions. If an actor was to play a character they would have to take the character's personality and surroundings, also the plot of the play, the setting, director's instructions and technical effects in the performance.
Imagination is the ability to think creatively beyond the confines of a script. So things like the character's past and there future, also the things we don't know about the character. "Imagination is key to turning a scripted play into a little piece of reality."
Emotional Memory, is using one's own experiences and feelings to make a performance more realistic and believable.
To do these techniques we used a script called "Men Should Weep" where we explored the characters Jenny, Maggie and John, looking at there feelings and emotions and connecting them with our own, also thinking of there past and there future and using our imagination to expand on the characters and really, be, them.
In reflection I think using Stanislavski's techniques really helped with the acting exercise we did and made me more confident throughout the activity. Also relating back to my own Arts project I think it really helped when writing a story, it really helped me build up and develop character and also really helped to develop a plot as I thought of connecting with a plot and imagining it in my head and then developing and expanding on it more.
PART A
The final place we visited was GOMA, the Gallery of Modern Art, and although GOMA is about art and not Theatre or Music or Drama, it was really nice to visit a place that is about a different aspect of The Arts rather than just acting, directing or writing.
I really enjoyed visiting GOMA because as I said before it's nice to find out about different aspects of The Arts and trying to understand, paintings and sculptures than Dram Texts and performances. Personally I really like looking between the lines in Drama texts and figuring out what they mean but it's really refreshing to do that with paintings instead and of course its different as well, because the way I see it the actual artist may have aimed to paint it in a different way.
As I have visited GOMA before it was really nice to see all of the new artwork and also the old artwork and try to work out what it means again, and that is my favorite part of The Arts, expanding on things and trying to figure out what they mean, of course I love performing and writing as well but it's also really cool to see what things mean and how a person can adapt on them as a writer or an actor.
PART A
After The Arches, we walked over to The Briggait were we met Al Seed. He talked to us about Physical Theatre and why he got involved with it, why he loved it so much, what his inspiration was and also gave us some advice for if we ourselves ever wanted to take part in Physical Theatre.
Visiting The Briggait was a really fun experience and the architecture of the building was really beautiful, also meeting Al Seed was really interesting.
What Happens In The Briggait?
Rather than being a Theatre Production company, The Briggait helps actors around the country with anything they would need whether it be with set or funding, and I find that really interesting because in The Briggait they were different.
PART A
The second place we visited was The Arches where we met George Mackenny and we were then given a tour around the different rooms and told how each room can be used for something completely different. We were also told about the variety of performances The Arches offers, for example, they hold really modern Theatre shows and then the same night can switch to a type of club/dance night with a DJ.
The Arches Live, is really interested in the "underdog" performer, or the people who aren't well known and need a lucky break. They stray away from tradition and give the other people, with different, new, refreshing ideas a chance to have the spotlight and show the public what they've got and how great they are.
I really enjoyed visiting The Arches, it really gave me an insight into modern performances and how great straying away from tradition can be.
While there I picked up a few leaflets of things happening in The Arches and also things around Glasgow and Scotland. I was really amazed with the variety of performances there were and how fast the performances can change, from a theatre show to a club.
What Happens In The Arches?
In The Arches, there is a lot of different things going on sometimes all at once, there have been singers, bands, theatre performances, club nights and Magic shows. But we can't forget the rumble of the trains from above.
PART A
Yesterday (16th of October) we went on a tour around Glasgow, visiting different places dedicated to the Arts.
The first place we went to was The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, a University dedicated to studying the arts.
At the RCS we visited The Stevenson Hall and seen were all of the Students would graduate. We also visited the Drama corridor and Music corridor, and got to see how students mingle and relax in the school. We visited The Library and got to read a few of the music and drama texts, we also got to look at different CD's with drama scripts on them, but sadly never listened to them. On the way around we took loads of pictures, and I was really surprised to see how welcoming and inviting some of the pupils were and how relaxed the atmosphere was.
What Can You Do in The Royal Conservatoire?
After exploring we found out that you can take a number of courses, for example, Contemporary Performance Acting, Musical Theatre, Opera, DFTV, Acting for the Camera and Technical Production Arts. There are also a number of short courses you can take on the weekend or throughout holidays, and these are for all ages. For example, there is a drama group for over 60's held at the weekends, and there are drama and dance classes for kids under 10. So the courses have a large variety of age, The Royal Conservatoire is very welcome to everyone, of all ages.
Why Would You Want To Come Here?
Personally, I would like to attend The Royal Conservatoire because of the variety of courses they offer, I think I would go for an Acting For The Camera or Musical Theatre course, because even though I am a writer Acting and Music I feel really passionate about as well. Also I think it would be a great help if I knew how to act, so that if I was writing a script, I would know what limitations to put down and what to put in for an actor to really get the part right.
Part A - The Arts in Glasgow(1).
Today (16th of October) we went on a journey around Glasgow to find out about The Arts opportunities. We went to:
~The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. ~The Arches. ~The Briggait. ~GOMA (Gallery of Modern Art).
We got a tour around each and where given some great advice about being a performer/Director/Writer in he Arts.
I think my highlight of the day would have to be visiting The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and seeing how student life is like for people interested in the arts and also how different classes are run. I especially liked finding out about how young people can get involved in the Arts.
When touring The Arches we got to meet George Mackenney the duty manager of the Arches and he gave us a tour And was also kind enough to give us some advice and tell us how The Arches worked.
When we where touring The Briggait we met Al Seed, who is a performer of Physical Theatre. He told us about how he got involved in Physical Theatre and why he wanted to be involved in this part of the Arts, it was really cool meeting him and hearing a Performers point of view.
After reviewing and looking back on today’s events I don’t think I can say anything was wrong with it, I enjoyed everything.
Part A - Making a Script.
When working with Jodie after we had went over everything she gave the chance to create my own little script. I decided to go with quite a cliche idea and write about a King and his Daughter, so using a Fantasy Genre. After giving the Script a read through Jodie helped give me some tips and told me how to make it better and how it could be improved on.

King (bored)
Well you are acting like one. What is wrong now?
Princess
Your-Your Guards tried to lock me in a tower like-like some helpless princess!

King stand and glares at Princess.
King
You are a princess! a princess who cant be trusted! Why must you insist on leaving our Wonderful Palace?
Princess Glares.
Princess
Because this isn't Who I am. I hate this castle and most of all...I-I hate you.
Princess storms away.
King flops onto his throne and rubs his face tiredly sighing.

Well if I am such an adult why did your guards try to lock me in a tower and keep me prisoner like some-some child.
Princess starts pacing.
King rolls eyes eyes and stands up with a cold expression.
King
Stop acting like a child. where there bars on your window? no and you know you are grounded, remember what happened last month when you turned up to the Duke's ball in nothing but a pair of scruffy jeans and dirty shoes. You clearly cannot be trusted to fulfil your princess duties. Why would you embarrass me like that?
Princess crosses her arms across her chest and huffs.
Princess
Because that isn't who I am, Im 15, a teenager, I want to do what normal 15 year old's get to do, I want to have a phone and an actual social life and have freedom. I DO NOT want to go to stupid parties with OAP's and talk about how watery the soup is! I am sick of being made up like a ridiculous Barbie Doll! I want to wear jeans not puffy dresses that look like pastries. I hate this life! I hate this castle! and most of all, I hate you!
Princess storms away.
King flops onto his throne and rubs his face tiredly.
This clip above would be described as the conclusion.
This would be described as the conclusion, firstly because it is the end of the film. But also because after 3 intense movies the Dark Knight trilogy has finally been wrapped up and finished.
This clip ^ would be described as the Antagonist or the barrier.
In no way at all is Alfred a bad man, he is described as The Antagonist because he is trying to stop Bruce from making the same mistakes. he try's to explain that Bruce is no longer physically capable or mentally capable of being Batman. All Alfred wants is for Bruce to be happy and for him to have the happiness and for him to not continue and kill himself for Gotham, like he has already done.
Gotham has already taken too much from Bruce and Alfred is trying to stop him because he knows this, Alfred knows that Bruce has already sacrificed enough and should stop because Batman is no longer who Bruce really is.
This clip would be described as the Inspiration.
At the start of the clip we see a young Bruce Wayne being picked up out of the hole by his Father and his father says. 'Why Do We fall?' an expression that seems to have been used by both Alfred and his Father.
When Bruce is in the pitt he has no hope, or any way of seeing himself getting out, this flashback is the inspiration and is what gives him the strength to get out and save his city - Gotham - just like has has done for all these years, and right now Gotham needs 'Batman' more than ever.
That is why this clip would be described as the 'Inspiration'.
With Jodie we worked on how to create a script and this is using a 6 point plan.

I have made a link to this clip, as in Batman it uses the exact same 6 point plan even though this is a big Hollywood Blockbuster Film.
The fight between Bane and Batman (Tom Hardy and Christian Bale) is pinned as The Lowest Point.
Batman doesn't realise that he is now too old to fight and defend Gotham and he doesn't realise he will be beaten, this fight with Bane does. It opens his eyes and makes him realise that he isn't the same man he was 8 years ago, when he was fighting The Joker and Two Face or even before when he was training with Ra's Al Ghul.
In the fight Bane breaks Batman, both physically and spiritually(By breaking his back and his hope) before taking him to the pitt, the place in which Batman thinks Bane grew up.
That is why this is described as the lowest point, because Batman is beaten and broken and it seems like there is no hope and no return.
Character Development [Writing Skills](1)
With Jodie we worked on Character Development and she gave me some good techniques that writers and play writes all around use. For Example, the technique I found most useful was using domino's in a hat and coming up with different characters (Minor characters) from other fairy stories that are not as important.
One of the fairy stories we used was Cinderella and we came up with a few characters, some of which where 'The Farmer Who Lost His Pumpkin' and 'The Lonely Rat' also 'The Prince's Best Friend'. Another Fairy Story we used was Peter Pan and some of the characters we came up with were 'Peter's Parents' and 'Nana's Therapist' also 'The Indian who doesn't get to Hunt'.
Character Development is quite tricky, especially if you aren't given a plot or idea to go from, using the dominoes was really helpful as it gives you the chance to fiddle something in your hand and think about, expanding your thoughts, although it seems strange, fiddling with something definitely helps you think about different ideas.
What really helps is when you are given a story to go off, like using the fairy story and expanding on character's that we have cam up with, because although the story only gives you the main characters we can imagine our own minor characters within this 'universe. It really gives you a chance to expand and develop character's and really make them your own.
Another thing you can do to develop character is taking an already made character and changing them a little bit to fit into what you are using them for, for example, if you took Little Red Riding Hood and made her a little more independent, smarter or more cunning. Developing a character to your own specific taste really helps if you are doing a twist or Alternate ending to Fairy Stories or Fantasy Stories.
On the 14th of October, in the Toonspeak offices. I met up with a play-write called Jodie Marshall. We worked together for 2 hours on a specialised writing project. throughout the 2 hours we worked on 'Character Development' and 'Constructing Narrative' and she also gave me help on writing my own little script.
Working with Jodie was definitely a big help she gave me some good tips and techniques for when I will be writing my own story/Script.
