Laura was so frakking tired. Not only was she having to fight Baltar as he ran against her in the election, but she still had to keep the government going, dealing with the Quorum's incessant questions, concerns and a desire by some to always piss her off.

Lately, she'd been spending time here and there in the Admiral's quarters, stealing moments of calm from the jaws of chaos.

On this particular occasion, when the Marines let her into Bill's quarters, he was reading on his couch, absorbed in his book. She joined him there, kicking off her shoes, and for a while, just let herself exist in the silence, listening to the ship's ventilation system, Bill turning the pages of a well-loved book, her own breathing. She didn't have to be anyone here, now, other than Laura, the human. For just a moment, there was no crisis to fix. Slowly, she leaned to her right towards Bill until her temple rested against his shoulder, and stayed there. Her headache receded, just a little, and she released a long-held sigh.

She'd never done that before. They'd never touched in that strangely intimate way, but she was too tired to worry about it. He said nothing, didn't move either, letting her rest on his shoulder for as long as she needed to. He understood the toll that being a leader of men took on a person, especially in their situation. After a minute, he started reading his book out loud too, and she closed her eyes.

Later, she would straighten up, be the President again, and go back to Colonial One. For now, she caught a break.

Little something that came to me whilst re-watching the 'Home' 2 parter recently.....

to be clear, I believe younger artists and minors can write good fics (not to say “fanfic must always be good” either because it is a hobby and I still believe that as long as it’s done with love and the artist’s joy, it is good) and I believe it’s good when younger artists and minors start making art at young ages.

that said, a lot of fanfics out there that you read and love are done by adults with kids, jobs and responsibilities. adults who have years, decades of practice under their belts. adults who don’t let life and responsibilities take away their joy in creating.

someone’s love and passion don’t suddenly go away the second they reach a certain age. so if anything, I feel sorry for people who say “adults shouldn’t write fanfics or make fan art” because what these people really say is that they expect themselves to stop having fun and finding comfort in things that bring them joy and comfort the second they reach a certain age. it’s sad that they put an expiration date on their own fun and source of comfort.

this and also the only difference between fanfic writers and writers who sell their own original works as careers is that fanfics aren’t monetized. that’s all.

being a “professional” writer doesn’t mean your works are inherently better than fanfics. I’ve read so many fics that are more professionally written than some published books.

whether or not a piece of writing is monetized has nothing to do with its quality.
