I’ve gotten some asks about it, so here it is
Nothing special, just wanted a new BG

Fuck Tradition - (a new year’s fanfic)
He’d chickened out.
They’d been in a mood to celebrate, him and Sam; it wasn’t every day you, your brother, and your mom got rescued from two different alternate dimensions, only to realize not 24 hours later that the angelic best friend you happen to be in love with had been demon-knapped some time prior, and thus sent your Nephilim ward to one of Hell’s prisons to rescue him.
Yeah, Dean had had a whirlwind few days.
So yes, even though traditionally the Winchesters didn’t do much for New Year’s Eve (as in, if they weren’t on a hunt, they binged Netflix and ate junk food,) Dean and Sam decided to throw a New Year’s party at the bunker.
The guest list was easy: Jody, Claire, Alex and Donna were already crashing there anyway; Cas, Mary and Jack were finally all home, and of course they’d all insisted Kaia was now a part of their extended family and needed to remain, at least as a favour to them, so they could thank her for saving their little family.
Sam grudgingly hung balloons and streamers (‘you’re the tallest,’ Dean shrugged) and the others got to work cleaning and picking up games and running into town for snacks and party favours and supplies for the night’s festivities.
After Claire beat him at rock, paper, scissors to determine who got the honour of making the music playlist, Dean put himself and Cas in charge of the food. Some dishes like chips and dip took care of themselves, whereas others were more involved- like the homemade sweet and sour meatballs from scratch (“No, Cas- you gotta mix it with your hands, like this… Okay, now add the Worcestershire sauce… more… Little more… y’know what, just dump the rest in…”)
The party itself had been fairly low-key: a relaxed evening playing board games and poker, drinking, dancing, laughing, enjoying good food, good conversation, and good friends.
At 11:59, they’d all crowded on or around the living room couch to watch the ball drop in Times Square from the small used TV, chanting down the numbers until they got to “One… HAPPY NEW YEAR!!” and the room exploded into cheers and whistles. While Jody gave Kaia a motherly squeeze, Donna planted a huge, sloppy kiss on Jody’s cheek; Sam gave Mary a bear hug, and upon registering poor Jack’s confused (and slightly concerned) expression, Claire and Alex somehow convinced everyone to give Jack a New Year’s kiss on the cheek.
Everyone, that is, except for Dean and Cas, who only had eyes for each other.
Their eyes caught and held right as fireworks lit up the TV screen, and Dean felt heat rushing his face at the intensity in Cas’ gaze. Without realizing he was moving, Dean closed the distance between them in two long strides, until they were close enough that Cas had to tilt his head up slightly to maintain eye contact.
Dean wanted to kiss him. So badly. That’s what you’re supposed to do at New Year’s, right? Kiss the person you love? He’d wanted it for ages, and after all the shit they’d been through, Castiel’s death and resurrection, alternate universes, and so on, Dean actually felt like he was ready to do it, like he was ready to act.
He stood there, heart hammering in his throat, lost in blue eyes for far longer than he’d care to admit, while his family cheered and hugged around him. Cas was so close he could feel his soft breath, could sense the electricity between them, could watch Castiel’s eyelashes flutter and his pupils dilate as his eyes flicked down to Dean’s mouth and back.
It was the way that Cas’s tongue darted out to lick his own lips that jolted Dean and sent him into a panic.
He chickened out.
He gave Cas a big, aggressive clap on the shoulder and blurted out loudly “Happy New Year, buddy!” before ducking around him to hug his mom and brother.
He’d fucked up and totally blown his chance, and spent the rest of the party torturing himself by watching as Cas smiled and chatted with everyone else.
One by one, people kept excusing themselves to sleep, until it was finally it was almost 3 a.m., and just the two of them.
“You can go to bed, Dean,” Cas said quietly. “I don’t need to sleep, I’ll clean up.” He’d already grabbed a garbage bag and was collecting the empties.
“I… uh… I’m not tired,” Dean stammered.
Cas frowned. “You’re lying.”
Dean laughed weakly, reaching a muscular arm up to scratch his head. “Okay, yeah, you’re right.”
Cas paused and looked him over, appraising, his eyes narrowed. He could tell Dean was stalling. “Are you ill?”
It was a fair question; Dean felt sweaty and clammy all over, his breathing was shallow, his heart was pounding, but he resolutely shook his head and stepped closer.
“Look, Cas,” he said gruffly, ignoring the question. “There was something I should have done earlier. Something I’ve been meaning to do, actually.”
“Oh?” Cas said indifferently, cocking an eyebrow.
“See, there’s this tradition…” Dean wiped sweaty palms on his jeans, willing himself to get it together.
“Tradition?” Cas frowned.
“Yeah, uh… New Year’s Eve, you’re supposed to- uh- you’re s’posed to kiss someone.”
Cas stilled, the intake of his breath coming out a slight gasp. “I see,” he said coolly.
“Yeah,” Dean nodded, fidgeting nervously.
“Well then,” Cas said blithely, busying himself with the black garbage bag once more. “I guess it’s too bad it’s no longer New Year’s Eve.”
Dean froze, unsure how to proceed. In his mind, Cas would get the hint, and Dean would boldly kiss him, and that way if it was bad or Cas rejected him, he could chalk his actions up to ‘tradition’ and not have to humiliate himself.
But now that Cas had pointed out the obvious, there was no way to lay one on him and blame it on it being a New Year’s Eve tradition. You blew it again, Dean chastised himself internally.
“Right! Of course!” Dean forced himself to give a casual laugh. “Well, uh, goodnight then, I guess. Don’t feel like you gotta clean all this up, I can do it in the morning.” He tried to ignore the wave of disappointment washing over him.
“I don’t mind,” Cas answered with a half-smile, his eyes tracking Dean’s movements.
“Isn’t that one of the perks of being an angel? You don’t have to do the dishes and take out the recycling?” Dean teased, trying to sound normal even though his heart was no longer in it.
“Perhaps,” Cas said, with a meaningful look at Dean. “But I suppose I’ve never been very traditional.”
“Oh,” Dean said, his pulse quickening. “No?”
“No,” Castiel repeated, stepping closer. “For example, I think New Year’s Day is just as good a time as any. For a New Year’s kiss, that is.”
“You- you do?”
“Yes.” Cas moved slowly, silently closer, until they were mere inches apart. He dropped the bag. “I think 3:02 a.m., for example, would be the ideal non-traditional time.”
“Y-you do,” Dean stammered.
“Yes,” Castiel whispered, his unfathomable blue eyes fluttering shut as he lifted his face to Dean’s once more. “I do.”
“Well, then,” Dean said hoarsely, as he tangled a hand into Cas’s unruly dark hair and joined their mouths together. “Fuck tradition.”
“Fuck tradition,” Cas agreed, murmuring against the hunter’s lips.
Dean never chickened out again.

Celebrating Dean | Week Eight | Music
Breaking Tradition
It’s almost midnight. Cas and Sam sit at the war room table, a laptop open in front of them; they’re watching a youtube video about indoor vegetable gardening. “See, Cas? We can grow all sorts of greens inside, as long as we get the right kind of light.”
Dean stands in the doorway, just watching and listening. Cas argues that nothing can replace sunlight and you’d surely be able to tell that you were eating inferior greens. Dean shakes his head, laughing softly. Only those two could argue about salad.
“I’m disappointed in you two,” Dean says. “Not surprised, but disappointed. You honestly couldn’t think of anything better to watch on New Year’s Eve than youtube?”
“Education is important, Dean,” Cas says, all seriousness.
Sam rolls his eyes. Glancing down at his laptop, he says, “Hey guys, there’s only about two minutes ‘til midnight. Get over here, Dean.”
Dean makes his way to the table, standing behind the other two. As Sam pulls up a broadcast of Times Square, Cas asks him, “What are the protocols for this holiday? I’ve never experienced this ritual with humans before. In heaven, one day is the same as the next, or the one before.”
“Well, people usually toast with champagne at midnight, but we’ve got beer as a stand-in. The other tradition, besides the obvious saying ‘happy new year,’ is to kiss the one you love at midnight.” Sam smirks slightly. “You’re on your own with that one though, Cas. I love you, but I’m not big into kissing my brothers.”
The countdown begins, and Cas glances over his shoulder, probably just making sure Dean had joined them. When he sees Dean standing there, the corners of his mouth turn up in a small smile.
It’s just a little thing, that smile, but it has a profound effect on Dean. I can’t let one more minute pass without telling him, he thinks. No more wasted chances.
Cas and Sam have counted down to seven, but Dean hardly notices. He pulls Cas to his feet and crushes their mouths together all in one motion. Vaguely Dean hears Sam say, “Oh. Uh…oh. Okay,” but he pushes it out of his mind, because finally, finally, he’s kissing Cas.
And–more to the point–Cas is kissing him back.
Cas’s lips are soft, softer than the lips of a badass angel have the right to be. Dean started out holding Cas’s hands, but after a moment Cas pulls them away to card his fingers through Dean’s hair. He wimpers slightly into Cas’s mouth.
“Uh, guys? Happy new year,” Sam says, interrupting the fireworks going off behind Dean’s eyes. He and Cas separate, but only an inch or two, their breathing labored.
“Happy new year, Sam,” Cas says, his voice like gravel. He doesn’t pull his eyes away from Dean’s.
“Yeah, so this is…great,” Sam says, gesturing in their direction, “but I don’t think I actually need to watch it, so I’m going to bed.” He sounds a bit bewildered, but also happy for them.
“Night Sam,” Dean says. He doesn’t look up either. “Happy new year.”
When they can no longer hear Sam’s footsteps, Cas says, “I thought you were supposed to kiss the one you love at midnight, Dean.”
Dean looks into Cas’s fathomless blue eyes. “I just couldn’t wait.”
Other Fic Recs
Soupernabturel’s (my) AO3
In addition to my DCBB 2017 Rec List this year I wanted to try and gather up a lot of the fics I really enjoyed reading this year (not all of them as some I forgot to bookmark, damn it!) into a rec list for you all, and also for prosperities sake, to look back on and see what I enjoyed reading throughout the year. So, below is a list of 50 Destiel fics that I really enjoyed this year or that stuck with me (not including the ones, already, mentioned in my DCBB reclist).
Peruse, enjoy and don’t forget to Kudos/Comment/Recommend to others, writers love that kinda shit ;)
★ As you like it by Englandwouldfall (series) Part one Summary: There’s at least fifteen good reasons why they’re not sleeping together, it’s just that Dean can’t remember them when Cas sends him one second dirty snapchats to goad him into doing the dishes.
★ Dean Hates Castiel’s Cock by Speary
Dean Smith’s move to a little gated community on the edge of town was meant to bring him a little peace, an apple pie life. His peace is disrupted though by the noisy crowing of his sinfully attractive neighbour’s numerous roosters. And everyone else is absolutely done hearing him complain about the noisiest cocks that ever lived.
★ And Mirrors by schmerzerling
In the aftermath of a less-than-ideal end to his career in the military, Cas is leading a less-than-ideal life. Turns out he and Dean Winchester have a lot in common.
That doesn’t mean he has to like him, though.
★ For This Night and All Nights to Come by thepopeisdope
Back in the southern castle Castiel once called home, cold was used to describe a bath that had sat too long and was no longer steaming, or a room with a draft. It was cold if one had to put on a tunic with sleeves to go riding.
North of the Wall, cold takes on a whole new meaning. Here, cold means frozen rations and endless snow, frostbitten limbs and stolen breaths. Cold is steel biting at your throat in a wordless threat. Cold is when the dead rise again.
★ where the weeds take root by beenghosting
“Are you happy? Y’know. Just—being here,” Dean says, gesturing to the yard with his beer bottle. “Being with—I mean, you used to fight in celestial wars and—and save the world. Now you’re growing vegetables and talking about chickens.”
★ Highwaymen. by orange_crushed
Dean closes his eyes. He is under a blanket in his memories, fabric pulled up under his chin and his face pressed near to hers on the pillow. His father is asleep, snoring slightly, hands loose and expression happy, curled around her on the other side. She’s speaking in whispers. He knows that she was already pregnant then, that Sam was on his way into their lives, even though he’d had no idea what exactly that meant at the time. He can almost see her face still, warm and orange in the light of her lumoscircling their heads like a firefly, but every now and then she blurs in his vision, like a lost thread of consciousness, something half-remembered.
Bit by bit, he’s losing her.

New Year’s Eve (2011)
Dear Dean,
This is a letter from your future self. I don’t normally do shit like this and you know it, but God knows you need to hear this, so here I am. It’s New Year’s Eve. Clock’s ticking down, or ticking up, I guess, depending on how you look at it. And I just wanted to tell you that it’s going to be OK, buddy.
I don’t know where you are - I been a lot of places - maybe you’re drinking, maybe you’re sitting with Dad and Sam in the car on the way to a new motel, there was that weird one after Dad died where it was just me because Sam got lucky early on, and I was just sitting and staring out of the motel window for hours, ran out of money for whisky.
Wherever the hell you are, I know one thing for sure, you’re hurting. And tired. And wishing you could spend the special days with someone who knew all of you, and thought - thought you were - awesome, I guess.
I know you want it not to matter, but I know that New Year’s Eve gets to you. And buddy, I know how hard it is to hold your shit together. I know you got people you’re missing and people you’ve hurt and people who’ve hurt you. I know you think that at the end of the day, you belong on your own.
Listen to me. Don’t do it. Don’t close up. I know how close I came to just deciding not to care at all anymore, I was so close… man, don’t do it, OK? Swear to me.
Because buddy, it’s New Year’s Eve. I’m sitting on the couch with my arm around Cas. We love each other, man. If you haven’t met him yet, you will. If you have met him, you know what I mean. It happens, OK? It happens. He loves you inside out and he knows it all, every single bit of it, and he loves you all the fucking same. God knows how. And you love him right back. And he’s here on the special days. And he’s here on the days that aren’t special, too.
Dean - past Dean - we’re so happy. Don’t give up. Swear to me. Keep feeling it all. It’s going to be so worth it, when you can still feel everything like I do right now.
Also, for past me in 2002, she’s actually a vampire. Don’t hook up with her.
Yours -
Dean.
SPN 11x18: Heartbroken
Despite the bad pacing, the excessive exposition, the misogynist slurs, the objectification of women (in Dean’s sexual fantasy out of context), the stereotyped trope for Arabic people, and the textual statements of what was going on necessary to understand the motivations of our characters, I think that Hell’s Angel was good in terms of Destiel. So let’s talk about Dean and his need to save Cas.
This season has been written to prove the characters in Supernatural (as well as some parts of the fandom) that Castiel is important. He’s one of the boys. HE’S FAMILY. Dean textually said it, thank you very much! Probably 11x18 will become the episode that many of us will quote every time we have to defend Cas and remind people of how much he means to Dean.
I’ve previously talked about how Dean has been singled out as Cas’ weakness. That has been clear for a very long time. But… has the show ever singled Cas out as Dean’s weakness? We know Dean’s weakness is Sam; in fact, we were reminded of that in 11x17. But in 11x18, it was very obvious that even though both Sam and Dean care about Cas, they don’t see him the same way.
Sam continues thinking of Cas as an angel. He knows very well the body he possesses is not exactly Cas; it’s his vessel. Dean, on the other hand, doesn’t think of Cas as an angel possessing a vessel. Cas is that weird, dorky little guy who he’s used to seeing. To Dean, the body is not a vessel; it’s Cas. It’s part of what Cas represents. Sam wouldn’t mind having Cas possess a different vessel, but Dean WOULD. Cas in a different body would NOT represent the Castiel that Dean knows, cares about, and loves. Dean sees Cas as a person, not as a supernatural being possessing someone who already died. That is HUGE! Some people have said that if Cas were in a female vessel, Dean and Cas would already be together. Guess what? If Cas were in a female vessel, Dean would NOT be pleased because that would NOT be his Cas. Cas is everything: his grave voice, his blue eyes, his trench coat (which Dean kept for a whole year). And Dean is NOT willing to lose Cas in any sense.
When Dean wanted to put Lucifer into a different vessel in order to protect Cas, Sam said they always screw themselves when they make the “heart choice” instead of the smart one. In other words, he told Dean that his wanting to save Cas was a heart choice. What was the advice that Dean got in 11x11? Wasn’t it something like “Follow your heart”? Dean was trying to do that despite Sam’s objections.
If you want to die a slow death, just listen to Dean calling Cas’ name when he realizes the one saying “Dean?” is actually Castiel. It’s so soft and tender until it isn’t anymore. When Dean realizes that Cas is losing control of the vessel, his voice turns desperate. And then when Lucifer reminds him that Cas invited him in, Dean shouts Cas’ name (and that’s when Lucifer mocks Dean).
Once we get a glimpse of Cas’ mind, we find him in the Winchesters’ kitchen. He could be anywhere, literally anywhere, but he’s watching TV (trying to cope with his depression) in the kitchen at the Bunker. In literature, a kitchen usually symbolizes domesticity, but it doesn’t take much to get to “domesticate”. That’s what’s happened to Cas, and it’s sad. Castiel is a powerful being, an angel that was tamed and kept as a pet. That’s what he thought when he said yes to Lucifer. He was tired of being expendable, wasn’t he? He was tired of being a pet, of being used by the Winchesters. That’s why he’s not in any kitchen. He’s in the Winchesters’ kitchen.
Many people have described Cas as broken when they saw that scene in the kitchen. I have to agree with them. The thing is that when I read those comments from other people, I immediately remembered something I asked one year and three months ago in this post:
The question in season 9 was “who do you love?” Whereas I think the questions in season 10 are “what kind of love do you feel?” and “whose heart are you gonna break?”
Since the beginning of season 10, I said that Dean was going to be a heart-breaker. Whose heart did he end up breaking? Who’s broken now? Who’s depressed enough to let Lucifer possess him and not believe that Dean actually wants him back? I think we already know whose heart Dean broke. The answer to the other question is missing: what kind of love does Dean feel? I think that’s something season 11 has been trying to give us –that’s why Sam mentioned romantic love in 11x04 and we were told Dean’s pining for someone in 11x11. Then we were given a romantic false lead (Amara) presented as Dean’s darkest desire, something that is totally out of his control. But guess what happened in this episode? When Amara showed up and Lucifer tried to kill her but failed, all Dean cared about was Cas.
Dean’s connection to Amara didn’t make him worry about her. He never called her name; in fact, he looked surprised and scared when he realized Lucifer couldn’t kill her. And when Amara had her hands in Lucifer, Dean called for Cas. He was afraid for his angel. He didn’t care about anyone or anything, just about Cas. Look at that scene again and tell me who Dean’s pining for.
Since 11x13 aired I’ve been saying that only true love will get Cas out of where he is. Who is going to show him true love? The Winchesters? Not exactly. This episode made it clear that it has to be Dean. So, what kind of love does Dean feel? True love? I don’t know if they’ll give us the answer this season (even if they should), but I do know that everything’s going to be alright. Why do I say that? This was the first thing we heard playing on the TV in Castiel’s mind:
Announcer: Is it going to be all right?
Crowd: It’s going to be all right!
Announcer: [Laughs] Oh, you bet! Dear friends, it is going to be all right. It’s going to be all right tonight. (x)
That’s a promise. We might think that everything is darkness right now (no pun intended), but everything’s going to be all right in the end.
Dean will go find that idiot and bring him home. Let’s just remember that home is where the heart is. One day Cas will call the Bunker home and truly believe it.
When Dean thinks so strongly about Cas that Cas picks up on it...
source: @charlie-bradcherry. 12x23, right after Lucifer mentions virgins and sex, one episode after Dean is re-virginised.
source: @charlie-minion. 12x09, right as Dean realises his time is up and he is about to die, then sends Cas what can only be described as a wistful, disconsolate look.
