nicky wire big smile is so important. like if you love nicky wire big smile reblog if you love nicky wire big smile ignore if you want her to be kicked down the stairs
People who recycle and put their trash in their pocket until they find a trash can and people who pick up liter when they see it and people who still cut the six-pack rings so animals don’t get trapped or choke on them and people who move turtles out of the road and people who stop for ducks and geese to cross all have a very special place in my heart. You are so good to this world and earth. I hope you know that.

while i hope the AI boom dies out i also hope we start acknowledging data center water overconsumption as it's own unique issue because like. it's not AI itself that harms the environment it's the hardware hosting it, right? same reason nfts and cryptocurrency were also bad for the environment. the root problem isn't going away so long as we allow big companies to continue hitching their wagon to the next big tech trend. i worry if they don't get stronger regulation we'll just be repeating the same issue whenever the next toy comes along.
and I hope we start to acknowledge (and do something about, too) the fact that data center water usage/emissions/etc pales in comparison to water usage/ghg emissions/pollution/diseases/habitat loss/environmental racism/illnesses/suffering/etc of animal agriculture. Like, we can't just focus on one smaller issue that we don't consume anyway
Tuira Kayapó brandished her machete in the face of a government official who was trying to convince indigenous leaders to accept a mega-dam project in the Amazon, 1989
“Electricity won’t give us food. We need the rivers to flow freely. Don’t talk to us about relieving our ‘poverty’ – we are the richest people in Brazil. We are Indians.”
part of kayapó’s speech during this event
also! she’s still alive! that sort of thing is always worth pointing out to show that we really aren’t too far removed from events like this! here’s a 2019 photo of her:
I just checked, she passed away in August 2024 - but not before working with a filmmaker to make an hour long movie where she explains her life and her activism. If you want to hear what she has to say for herself, here’s the opportunity.
Movie is ‘Tuire Kayapó’ (First Contact) by Pınar Yolaçan, in case the link breaks
"I could be vegetarian but not vegan!"
Then go vegetarian!!!
"i couldn't go vegan, I love cheese too much"
Then go vegan except for cheese!!
"I'd go vegan but I just can't live without (non-vegan brand of cookies)"
Then go vegan except for that non vegan brand of cookies!!!!!
Ultimately everyone should have veganism as their end goal, but you NEED to start somewhere! You cannot achieve any goal if you just do nothing!
Psalms of Blood
if perfectionism is what is stopping you from being vegan, then don't strive for perfection. do what you can to live in line with your vegan morals. i promise that you trying your hardest and doing what you are able to is more effort than the average person who doesn't care at all.
and remember you are doing it for the animals. you arent living this way to impress other vegans.
It's so weird how the veganism that goes viral among the general population has literally nothing to do with the rest of vegan activism. I've had so many encounters with non-vegans asking what I think about "the vegan teacher" and I literally have never in my life saw any content from that woman despite having been active in vegan spaces online for over 8 years now.
The stuff vegans promote and what we talk about never becomes mainstream because it's uncomfortable for non-vegans to have to read. Meanwhile, "cringe" vegans is what goes viral, because it's politically correct to clown on vegans, even in leftist spaces.
I just think the huge gap between what vegans actually talk about and what non-vegans see online and decide is representative of veganism as a whole is kind of insane.
Rest in peace Dr. Jane Goodall you wonderful wonderful woman

“People want to frame violence against animals as a personal choice and violence against humans as an injustice. That’s hypocrisy. Animals are not inanimate objects - they are sentient individuals just like us with thoughts, feelings, and emotions.”
— Jamison Scala (via protect-animals)
All of my friends that work at wildlife rehab centers have had to untangle animals from this stuff, or had animals brought in that died in it. This is especially nasty for small owl species.
Why would you put fake spiderwebs outside your home anyways? Do what my family does and use them as indoor decorations, it's easier to clean up that way and it makes the living room look cool.
Good to know for us animal lovers, if you’re going to use them please keep it to decir inside the house, not out!
Oh shit had no idea!! Thank you!! Source:
The classic Halloween decor can be a silent threat to furry friends if displayed unsafely.
"As autumn advances, leaves begin to fall from trees and a chill runs through the air, making it increasingly clear the spooky season is upon us. But as people decorate for Halloween, they may be setting up a trick rather than a treat for surrounding critters: That fake spider webbing commonly seen across the country every October is just as effective at trapping critters as a real web is.
Kathryn Dudeck, the wildlife director at Georgia's Chattahoochee Nature Center, told Snopes via phone that fake spider webbing, normally made out of a synthetic, fiber-like polyester, is similar to tightly woven fiberglass.
"The webbing actually adheres to the skin of a toad," she said. "For raptors and songbirds, it sticks to their feathers and then settles in between them, almost like velcro." ...
Dudeck said that animals most at risk with fake cobwebs are small birds, including hummingbirds and small owls, bats and reptiles, like toads...
The danger of fake webs doesn’t immediately go away after Halloween, either. A 2019 article from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation explains that if not properly disposed of, birds might use the material to build their nests. In a worst-case scenario, the webbing could catch and trap any chicks in the nest. The solution to all of this is fairly easy: stop using fake webs outside.
Instead, consider moving the webbing indoors, perhaps behind a window so it’s still visible. If you are set on creating a web outdoors, Dudeck recommended making one out of rope and ensuring you've left ample space between strands to mitigate the risk to wildlife."

if i see these outdoors anywhere within walking distance i go there in the middle of the night and i take them down. im not bragging, im saying this is easy to do and everyone should

Octopuses belong in the wild. Don't let them capture and kill these beautiful creatures.
You are one of many sentient species on this earth. Many of whom came from the same ancestors as you.
There is no hierarchy of life and you are not at the top.
Humans are another kind of animal.
Once more, some of y'all have no idea what veganism means. It is an ethical objection to using animals for our own selfish purposes. It has nothing to do with how nice you are to the animals.
