you got any/know anyone with experience with lupron as an antiandrogen? i'm looking into it, but i want other transfemme's wisdom on it.
gnrh ant/agonists my beloved. the receptors in your brain can be agonized or antagonized (these terms have no business being this cool), which usually makes a large difference. heroin is an opiate agonist, narcan is an opiate antagonist. gnrh agonists work exactly the same as gnrh antagonists, afaik all we can tell you about that is "isn't that weird?"
I've done monotherapy from the jump, so I have no idea, but I've heard nothing but good things about lupron et al. if you have more specific questions I could try to find answers for you, but for the moment well
[you are reading this on your dash I am looking at you]
do you have any advice for her?
I actually did some work modelling how these work as part of the PhD I was on! (before mental health meant I dropped out)
Basically, the pituitary gland receives pulses of GnRH and then the frequency of these pulses determines the pulse frequency of leutenizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), which are then what triggers the release of sex hormone from your relevant gonads (testes or ovaries).
Antagonists work as you would expect, stop the pituitary gland receptors for GnRH from working and so the downstream impacts also stop and so no sex hormone is produced.
Agonists work because they provide a constant stimulation to the GnRH receptors in the pituitary gland. These receptors are designed to receive pulsatile signals and so become overstimulated (I feel you there receptors), and the pituitary gland then will ignore the signal from them. This means the pituitary gland is functionally no longer receiving a GnRH signal and so no longer produces LH or FSH, and so nothing drives the release of sex hormone. Same as for the antagonists.
This method is also achieved by using GnRH analogues such as goserelin, which do the same thing as agonists like lupron, but instead use something that works like GnRH to bind to the receptors to get the continual GnRH signal that causes desensitisation.
This method of stopping testosterone production is the standard practice over here in the UK, and is proscribed alongside pills, patches, or gel. And is also what is used as 'puberty blockers' here too both for cis kids going through early puberty and trans kids who want to stop theirs (but it's *really* hard, and currently illegal for trans kids to get full HRT. And puberty blockers have been banned for kids here too now for the past couple of years), so I can confirm that they do work incredibly well for their purpose of stopping endogenous hormone production.
The only 'bad' side effects you'll hear about are those relating to bone density etc that are actually a side effect of not having any sex hormone in your body at all. And since you'll be supplying oestrogen, that will never be a problem for you.
The other minor downside is that it's arguable that it keeps your T level too low, as it is good to have some testosterone in your body and it will suppress T production more fully than monotherapy will. But that extra suppression is unnecessary, and sadly we don't have the research on what is a healthy minimal T production in women.
Basically, it's incredibly effective and will do the job better than any other T blocker. But monotherapy (if you can do it) does probably leave you with a healthier level of T while still sufficiently suppressing it.
Also, worth saying I have been on goserelin personally for about 8 years now and it has been fine. Injection every 12 weeks, which makes it not much of a bother, and have no complaints about it personally.
I come from a maths background rather than biology so there was a lot of learning and I don't have the breadth of knowledge around it, but it was very cool being able to make some models of the drugs I was actively taking and understand how they worked.
decided to voice two of my poems

hey everyone. i know a lot of you have also come to love nora through my posts and pictures. i'm sorry to say it wasn't good news and there isn't much we can do; this is one of those health issues where once it's noticeable, it's not getting better. today seemed to be the first day it was bothering her but it was going to be her best day from now on, and i didn't want her to suffer & be confused. nora said goodbye peaceful and feeling safe, resting on my shoulder in her favorite spot.
thank you all for loving her with me. hug your animals a little tighter for me, and if you feel like it, leave a glass of water out for nora as she goes.
i could still use the help if anyone can spare. thank you all for making me -- & nora -- feel loved.
Without fail
This also applies to celebrities that white ppl perceive as white or close enough to whiteness (e.g. East Asians)
Without looking them up, ask if you know these ppl and why I’m putting them on this post.

i think taylor swift wishes she was bisexual because she knows it would make her slightly more money. whereas sabrina carpenter wishes she was bisexual so she could have sex with someone who looks exactly like herself. and ariana grande wishes she was bisexual because she did too many designer drugs on the set of wicked and now she has kin memories of being glinda for real
hey, transfem eggs? let yourself receive love. let yourself be loved. please. don't push others away, be a girl and be loved for who you are. people care. they care so goddamn much, and please, let them care for you. it is more worth it than you could ever imagine, i promise you. you'll be so lovely. so so so lovely. you will be loved. it is never too late.
personally I am of the opinion that vegans who are like “the way our food system currently works under capitalism on a large scale is exceptionally cruel to all animals including humans and is not sustainable, so I’m doing what I can to make the most ethical choices available to me about what I eat and encourage others to do the same” are generally very reasonable people who I agree with in spades. but vegans who seem to think human beings are not themselves animals who are ultimately also part of the food chain but instead some kind of other paternalistic higher entity that can never engage in ethical and sustainable hunting practices (and especially the fringe I’ve seen who think other carnivorous animal predators are also evil and need to be eliminated) are people I regard as foolish at best if not actively anti-indigenous and racist
I made a battle axe out of monster cans
Pretty fun weapon to draw
Is it entitled to ask a person of color how you were being racist if they tell you you are? Is there an alternative?
Sorry if this sounds like it's in bad faith... I'm not sure how else to phrase it.
my pinned has a magic phrase that casts Make Lily Be More Patient With Me ;) it's definitely a little bit in bad faith, but I don't think you mean for it to be. the misrepresentation seems unintentional, at least
in the post you're asking about, he was (angrily) insisting that people shouldn't get mad at him for being racist and should teach him what he did wrong. he is not entitled to an explanation, the burden of responsibility is his.
whether or not asking for help is appropriate entirely depends on the situation. I typically err on the side of not doing that, I think about it on my own and (if I need to hear a racialized person explain it to me) I use Google. there's no shortage of material.
notice that you couldn't help but come into this conversation a little bit hostile. a person who just heard you say something racist isn't going to be half as sympathetic as you want them to be, you have to learn how to cope with that.
it's just exhausting having to explain shit to people all the time. have you looked into white guilt at all? you can do that right now instead of having to confront it for the first time in a tense moment.
Okay, I’m going to answer this one in the hopes that it will mean that at least one racialized person will have at least one fewer exhausting interaction in their life about this kind of thing.
Generally speaking, if someone you have a casual relationship calls you out for being racist, it will be in direct response to you doing or saying something that was, in fact, racist. Individual people will phrase it differently, but you will also likely recognize a tone shift or drop in comfort/openness in the conversation from before vs. after.
Pause and rewind to what you just said or did to cause that response. Chances are, it will be relatively clear. You can apologize gracefully (a simple “my bad, won’t do that again” will suffice) and move on.
I will also say that even if it doesn’t feel/seem racist to you, that’s not your call to make. One class with systemic power over another does not get to determine what is or isn’t hurtful in to that oppressed class, within that context. For example, I am able-bodied and if a disabled person tells me something I said or did was ableist, even if I don’t exactly get why, my understanding in that moment isn’t the point.
If you want to know more, look it up. There are about a bajillion resources out there from academic historical and sociological analyses to microaggressions 101 via Instagram graphics. I promise they are not hard to find.
If the callout is coming from someone you’re closer to and you genuinely want to learn about their perspective, approach it that way. A few ways to show your openness is to 1) admit you don’t know what you don’t know, 2) share that you want to learn so as to not hurt them or others going forward, 3) limit interruptions on your end during their explanation, 4) ask thoughtful follow up questions if invited to do so, and 5) express appreciation that they’ve taken the time to share.
Trust is built over time. The first sign that someone trusts you enough to continue a relationship with you is often by letting you know that you hurt them. They are trusting you to take on what they said with humility and to do better. Your ability to take on constructive criticism about hard topics, your willingness to do the work of independent learning, and your ability to not take yourself too seriously along the way are also huge steps to earning that respect from others.
I know this kind of thing can feel weird and embarrassing because we genuinely can’t know everything and that is inherently an emotionally vulnerable position to be in. But just like with any other social or cultural barriers, I believe we are better people — and better to one another — when we try anyway.

if you decide to become a police officer then that outweighs any other marginalised identity you can rustle up like. not sorry, who asked you to willingly become a pig
I have heard of black people warning their kids that the race of a police officer is cop and you should not expect solidarity from them. The same applies to other types of minorities.
The sexuality of a police officer is cop.
The gender of a police officer is cop.
When you become the enforcer and protector of capital, you are making the deal to be slightly favored by the system over others like you, in exchange for being its servant. Your solidarity is with the system that you serve, even if it hates you.
If you want solidarity with those the system hates, you cannot be the system's servant and defender.
