I wish I had Kit Tanthalos as a child. I wish I could have sat on the sofa with my mum and dad and watched as a Disney princess was the one doing the rescuing.
I wish we could have watched together as Kit and Jade navigated their relationship from best friends in love with each other but scared to say anything, to admitting to each other how they feel.
I wish we could have seen people notice the relationship between Kit and Jade without telling either of them that it was wrong, or not allowed.
Boorman clocks that there’s something going on in episode one, and all he does is give a little smile, raises an eyebrow and nods towards Jade and Kit sleeping close to each other, he never says that its wrong or that it wouldn’t ever work.
Elora give’s Kit advice on what to say to Jade, she calls Kit out on how she’s behaving, because everyone can see that there is something to Jade and Kit, but again, Elora never says its wrong, she encourages Kit to be brave, to talk to Jade about how she feels.
Willow calls Jade out on the real reason she’s willing to throw herself off a cliff. It’s not for Tir Asleen or Sorsha, it’s because she loves Kit, and she protects Kit. He says it with a smile on his face, and yeah Jade looks embarrassed to be called out on her feelings at first, but knowing there’s no negative impact coming, she embraces it.
So yeah, I wish I had Kit Tanthalos as a child. Because I could have seen myself on my screen so much sooner than I did.
Any media I had as a child that showed love between two women, was either in the light of its wrong and they had to hide who they were, or one or both of them ended up being killed in the end.
I am so so happy right now that little kids can watch Willow (2022) and see themselves on the screen, in a positive light as well.
Thank you for giving us Kit Tanthalos, and Jade Claymore, and letting them be in love and it not be shown as something they have to hide from anyone.
