Rant on the Sliding Timescale at Marvel
I fucking hate it. Okay "hate" is a strong word, but I dislike the idea that the company can casually dismiss years of storylines and cultural significance as if none of it mattered. Just because something happened in the distant past doesn't mean it has no repercussions today. Whether people like it or not, the future is built on the past and the present is simply the reflection of the consequences. So by denying it, Marvel has publicly signalled that it has no future which is reflected in their comics and cinematic universe. Everything is trapped in this stagnant, nostalgic simulacrum of the past. How many times are we going to see Steve Rodgers thaw from the ice and undergo the same plot beats and character growth? One may argue that Captain America is a timeless character and Steve's revival and adaption to the present is an important narrative lens. While I do agree, I think Steve's growth and interactions is also important because it serves as a narrative vehicle on the dichotomy of America. So when he gets reset to fucking square one each time, the importance becomes meaningless. Why should I care about anything Steve does? Why should I care about a supporting cast member who is just going to disappear in the near future? It doesn't fucking matter. Don't get me started on the MCU when they brought him back because they failed at fostering interest in their new characters. What a lazy attempt at fanfare(I am fine with Steve coming back. Not so early though. let his story sit for a bit and let Sam progress his. Then steve can come back without it looking desperate while undermining Sam in the process)
Sincerely a Captain America fan whose favorite character had most of his canonical appearances retconned out of existence.
