The Sound of Music really did teach me a lot from a young age about the importance of knowing the implications of your boyfriend's political beliefs, his moral character, and choosing someone you're aligned with, not just someone who's good at dancing with you. Also, to be wary of blonde men.

I hate being asked: "How are you?"

I hate being asked: "How are you?", because my answer is always: "Bad."

And if I say: "I'm doing bad", then I'll be asked, "What's wrong?" Which isn't what the other person wants to ask but they ask anyway cause it's the polite thing to do.

Then I'll be expected to explain. I don't want to explain, but, of course, it'd be rude not to. So then I'm traumadumping about how shitty my life is when originally all I was asked was "How are you?"

And the more this happens, the more this person wonders: "Why am I around this person who feels bad all the time?" Because I make them feel bad, feel pity. And they don't like to feel pity, so they stop asking. Stop talking to me.

So, instead, whenever I'm asked: "How are you?" I say: "tired." Because it's true, I am tired, of everything. But the other person, doesn't know that. They hear a relatable statement and go: "Me too." And for just a second, just a moment there's a sense of community that I never feel.

Because I'm not the only one that's tired.

One time I'm asked, by the dishwasher at work. He says: "You're always tired, why?"

I don't dread the question this time.

And I go: "Isn't everyone?"
