What’s the Ancient Civilisation? I’ve seen and heard people mentioning it, but I’m wondering what it actually is

(Although only hinted at in the designs of areas, weapons and armour, the Ancient Civilisation is an integral part of Monster Hunter Lore. They were a thriving nation made of multiple members of different races and were notable for their incredibly advanced technology. For example, Dragonators and Artian Armor are made from their blueprints. It’s even implied that they created the Hunters themselves.)

Assume the bros exist as points.  Let b be the set of locations of each bro. Maximize the size of the set b with the constraint  |b_i - b_j| >= 5 to keep the bros at a state of “no homo”. 

This problem is equivalent to finding the maximal packing of a bunch of circles with radius 5/2 where each bro is in the center of each circle. (Confused? We use identically sized circles because any two circles with radii less than 5/2 each may not be 5 feet apart, which breaks the problem equivalence. Why 5/2 and not 5? We do not use a radius of 5 because when you’ve got tangent circles the distance between the centers is the sum of the two radii. See below. )

We have existing work on how to fit k unit circles in another circle of variable size. To simplify the problem, we change the units to 5/2. Unfortunately, the maximal packing of a set of n bros appears to not have a general solution, but we have some cases proven (great) and some cases for which we only have conjectures (okay). If you noticed that this is approximately a square function of the radius but not quite, you’re correct! The area of the hot tub increases at a square rate (A=pi*r^2) as the radius increases, and you can kinda fit more and more circle units in. The noise is from the fact that the bro unit circles (bro-zones, if you will) are not tile-able without gaps, and so some variation of bro-zone density may occur.
