Supernatural vs Teen Wolf
Since my parents raised wolves when I was a small child, to the point that one of them is technically responsible in teaching me to walk. (A fave story of my mums.) I have a bit of a pull to anything wolf-related. Be it literary or visual media, tv/movie. The interpretations of various lore's and how they are depicted are just downright fascinating to me. Especially when you add in that the author that coined the terminology relating to "Alpha Wolf" and pack formation, is reported to be regretting parts of his book and purported to have asked the publisher to stop reprinting his book. I can see why one would compare these two shows, on many levels.... I am sure there are more points of comparison, but this is a quick once over after seeing a FB post. Slight spoilers on Teen Wolf might be mentioned, and I tried to mark them. Teen Wolf is meant to be a teen drama, obviously due to the network its on. And in fact one of it's stars Dylan O'Brien nearly lost a role in a major movie franchise due to having been on Teen Wolf as the movie producers/casters thought him just a 'tv drama pretty boy, with sterotypical teen haircut' type of thing. But, there's more to it. The mid-level to high-level characters 20+ years of age add richness to the show. I, personally, would not put it equal to SPN on many levels, but I still enjoy and find TW entertaining, with some small teen-romance glossing over. The fact that they introduce not only various aspects of wolf-related lore, but expand the interpretations of visual (eye colour) cues is pretty cool. That they introduce the audience to different cultures of monsters, and give a bit of back story (never complete, as that's hard with any Lore), is entertaining. Adding Mythos not just within one realm, but expanding beyond a small area is enriching, and hopefully will encourage the audience to read up the mythos. They do this, as does SPN. But with fewer episodes, and with less reasons to travel, and a smaller network, it's understandable that they have less mythos and creatures introduced so far than SPN.
Lore Master - SPN’s Bobby Singer Vs TW’s Deaton & the Argents
Having Deaton, in place of a Bobby, is challenging at times to me. Because we don't see him doing as much research because he knows a lot of the "magical community", but he is a great resource. But we also see another group in place of Bobby as the "Lore Master", and that would be the Argents. Maybe more along the lines of what some would think as a knowledge collector, due to being hunters who search out information, lore, how to kill and then note all this down in a book. Both accurate comparisons, or flipisides of a coin in my eyes, as both originally saw the “humanity” and rights to be if they follow a moral code.
Hunters - Protecting the general masses from the supernatural forces
In Supernatural we have a wide, rich variety of hunters - small groups; families; people who fall into the life due to an encounter; Men of Letters and the Jewish Initiative groups formed with a purpose - the show focuses on each of these, if only for an episode. With the vast time the series has been on air, it has allowed for a rich storytelling of these groups. In Teen Wolf, we have had a more limited timeframe and a more localized area to deal with. Thus our hunters, or protectors have also been limited. We primarily have the Argents. A family self-conscribed to protecting humanity, for generations. In both shows we have watched both sets of Hunters evolve from their original “calling” and purpose to have a broader vision of what the definition of a “Monster” is, and what their “right” to existing is.
Brotherly bonds - Sam & Dean VS Scott and Stiles
In Supernatural Sam & Dean have had their relationship forged in fire from the beginning, through Hell and back in figurative and literal terms. Their family has been reunited and ripped apart in front of them, for generations - through Heavenly and Demonic forces, each time testing their brotherly bond. Yet no matter the trial, so far they have always found their way back to each other - “You and me against the world!” In Teen Wolf, Scott and Stiles may not be brothers in blood, but they are by bonds of the heart. Best friends who have gone through many hardships, and survived Supernatural influences, and continue to do so in this last season.
Daddy Issues - Everywhere, all a little different like snowflakes
Seems to be such a common theme in every single show or book, something shows up at some point, even if it’s small, am I right? Supernatural - Depending on which side of the fence you might be on, you might see John Winchester as a great father or a horrible one. Either way he prepared his sons for the ‘real’ world, and made sure they had the knowledge and resources to survive as long as possible. Henry Winchester left John. Samuel Campbell left Mary Campbell (before she married John). God left the Angels to babysit the humans and they rebelled. And many more instances of daddy issues are in Supernatural. Teen Wolf - Scott’s father left when he was young, and in the series we find out why. No spoilers, but there’s always a reason. Stiles and Mr. Stillinski have a unique relationship due to Mr. Stillinski being Sheriff, and Stiles takes so much advantage of this that is heartbreaking at times. Mr. Chis Argent and his daughter Allison Argent in the hunter’s family also have their issues that play out to the point of heartbreaking.
Mommy issues - Losses like a steel grip on one’s heart (slight spoiler)
Supernatural - Sam and Dean lost Mary, and we see this in the first episode. It’s a turning point in their lives, in their father John’s life as well. Teen Wolf - Stiles lost his mother, and that loss has a reoccurring impact on his and his fathers relationship throughout the series. (Spoilers) Alllison Argent looses her mother and it is twists her, with the help of another, into something she didn’t think she’d be.
Monsters - Werewolves, Kitsunes, Hellhounds, Oh My!
Supernatural Wolves- Werewolves have been portrayed in Supernatural in a few ways. The base existence may be the same, often tied to changing with the Lunar cycle, craving human hearts - but the minute details of community and how they live has differed over more than 4 episodes. We have seen random attacks; attacks that were on a base level due to perceived love and protection. We have seen lone wolves, and communities. We have seen bitten wolves, and we have seen inherited by bloodline wolves. We have seen religious wolves. We have seen married wolves with families. They have Yellow eyes and must be killed by a blow to the heart with silver, and they do not fully transform. Teen Wolf Wolves- Again we have seen random attacks, we’ve seen attacks for protection and revenge. But we have more lore as the show is so wolf-centric. Each level of wolf has a different eye colour - Betas have yellow eyes; Alphas have red eyes; a Beta that kills an innocent has Blue eyes. The werewolves have vulnerabilities, Wolfsbane (naturally!); Mistletoe, Mountain Ash. Supernatural Kitsunes - Survive on pituitary glands. Teen Wolf Kitsunes - Japanese Fox spirits, with various powers. Seen power of working with electricity. Supernatural Hellhounds - Demonic dogs that serve demons, usually sent after people who have made cross-roads deals, and their chip has been called. After the typical 10 years allotted from their demon deal, a Hellhound is sent to retrieve their soul and drag them to hell. Teen Wolf Hellhound - Black Dog or bearer or death, guardian of the Supernatural. Supernatural Banshees - Spirits of women who warn of impending death. Can be good or bad, can be tied to family. Can cause those they warn to kill themselves to avoid hearing the cries of the banshee. Teen Wolf Banshees - Two known live banshees. 1 implies that the gift of seeing impending death can be passed through family lines. 1 we do not have the history on. Lydia, the resident Banshee may be evolving her abilities above and beyond a typical banshee, but without a solid Lore or other banshee to utilize for reference, it’s unknown the total of a banshee’s ability in this universe.
