Tristan had always had one company he could count on, some stern voice in the back of his mind that reminded him what he was. A king. A Monarch. The protector of Scotland. That voice at times found itself able to quiet, waiting while he avoided the temptations of ordinary men until one proved itself strong enough to linger a moment too long in the forefront of his mind. Then the voice would shake clear with its constant certainty any confusion between men and kings. These last few weeks that voice had been an almost constant presence, working constantly to still muscles that sought to venture elsewhere. Impulses that wanted to take him to the girl who had a tendency to make that line between man and king blur. He had always known that there would be blood that stained his hands, such was the way for kings. And so it was not the violence of the act that startled him and woke the voice but rather the realization that in that moment he had not been a King killing a threat to his country, but a man killing a threat to a woman.Â
He had spent the weeks since the princesses recovery with his physical self as far from her as possible it seemed. Tristan knew it was not a very long term plan but he also thought that perhaps with distance he could return to the kind of harmless and innocent affection he had had for her through years of letters. In those few weeks he had gone about very regular behaviour, in fact very subdued behaviour for the king. So he found himself quite early in the night coming out of the bath, and about to prepare for sleep -or rather laying in darkness. His towel was tied loosely around his waist and his palm was pressed firmly to his forehead where he felt the beginning of a head ache. Mid step he realized he was not alone and his icy eyes turned upwards to land upon Rosalie. His tone was inquiring, question of why she was here laced into the single word, âRosalieâ.
Rosalieâs eyes met his and suddenly her words wouldnât surface. They stayed buried in her chest as the both of them stood in silence. Tristan was, and perhaps always would be, a mystery to her. Even now, nearly naked and unsuspecting, he was hidden from her. Half-shadow, half-man. How Rosalie longed to know him, now more than ever. The years sheâd spent longing for a faraway Prince with pristine and confident penmanship were nothing compared to the agony of standing in front of him like this.Â
The silence stayed because there werenât words intimate enough to express what their eyes already had. No time nor patience for âhowâve you beenâs or âIâve missed youâs. No pleasantries nor niceties.  The princess wouldnât curtsy. She couldnât expect him to bow. Even the presence of their guards and staff felt like an intrusion, despite years of experience training them both not to notice them any longer. She could have said anything still. The princess could have screamed at him, kissed him, or continued to stand and do nothing at all. Instead, three words stuck to the roof of Rosalieâs mouth, and she had a hell of a time getting them out, âYou werenât there.âÂ
âŚand I am out with lanterns, looking for myself.

hm-charles-of-france:
He couldnât remember the last time that Rosie had been so close to him without being angry at him in some aspect. He knew that sheâd pretend to not care, but he didnât miss the fact that she had still be angry with him. He dug around for a moment before producing a clean handkerchief, offering it to her with a smile. âYouâre allowed to be angry with me, Rosalie,â He said, wiping at a stray tear that clung to her cheek. âThat doesnât mean that I wonât still be here for you if you need me. Just because you donât agree with my actions doesnât make me any less of your father.â
The girl nodded then, saying softly, âI know, papa. I know.â Things had just been so difficult between them for so long, it was hard not to look back at now and regret the time that had passed between them this way. âI will always be there for you too. No one quite needs me.. but if you had, even when I was really angry, I would have been there in an instant.â A sad smile formed, âI love you, papa. No matter what. I-I do. "Â
Unsure footsteps echoed through the halls of the eastern wing as a young princess made her way towards her betrothed. Now that sheâd somewhat reconciled with one man sheâd been avoiding, Rosalie felt resolute to do the same with the other. What did it matter that Tristan had slain a man right before her eyes? He was saving her life and.. it doesnât.. well, it doesnât quite matter because it doesnât really change the arrangement of their eventual marriage. Only the King of Scotland or her father had the power to do that. Still, Rosie bit her lip sadly, guilt seeping through her for even thinking one life didnât quite matter.Â
Her hand pushed against his door, crossing a threshold sheâd really only crossed twice before. She had to admit that this was the most uneasy moment yet, her stomach flipping and falling as she searched for him through his rooms. Finally, Rosie caught a glimpse of his dark hair, eyes following down the nape of his neck, over his shoulder, down past his waist, all the way until her gaze met the floor. It suddenly fell over her how long it had been, and she swallowed hard before she said, âTristan.â
hm-charles-of-france:
He was very shocked by her sudden nearness, he knew that for sure. Wrapping his arms around her, he pressed a soft kiss to the top of her head lightly. âOf course, mon chere,â He murmured, holding her close. It was certainly the first time in a long time that sheâd sought him out (though, technically, neither had sought out the other) but at least she hadnât left him there.Â
Despite the distance sheâd been holding her father at since Victoire, something about his embrace was so soothing to Rosalie. She felt truly safe for the first time since the attacks, and she realized that in cutting her father out of her life, she wasnât just punishing him for his misdeeds but punishing herself as well. It felt good to stop punishing them both, at least for this moment. But soon enough, Rosalie was nudging herself out of his arms and quickly wiping the tears off of her cheeks. âIâm sorry, papa. I just..â, she paused, frowning, âItâs really difficult being angry with someone you still need.â

Ask my muse âWed, Bed, Beheadâ

hm-charles-of-france:
He wasnât sure if he was surprised by her sudden answer or not. He watched her gather her thoughts for a moment, frowning to himself. âHow so?â He asked, brushing a bit of her hair back absently, like he would have done in the past. âHow can I help?â He asked, raising an eyebrow at her. Now that sheâd said something, he wanted to help her in any way that he could, even if it was something as benign as a walk.
For some reason, the intimacy of his touch made Rosie fall against her father and bury her face in his chest. Ever since the attack, Rosalie had been trying to maintain her composure at all times. She wanted to be viewed as strong, resilient. She didnât want Tristan thinking she was too weak to be his bride. But in burying her weakness, Rosalie only allowed it to grow. âJust donât move, okayâ, she whispered against his chest as Rosalieâs tears began to spill over.Â
hm-charles-of-france:
He could tell that she was lying - he had always felt proud of himself when he could tell when she lied - but he didnât push her. He didnât want to push her away further. Nodding, he stopped in their walk and looked down at her. âDo you wish to return to France?â He asked her, raising an eyebrow. âI never intended for you to feel trapped on this trip and if you want to return home, I will arrange for it to happen.â
âNo, no.â, she countered fervently, realizing that the prospect of returning home was no longer soothing to her. The whole of it was different now. She was different now. France could console her no longer. At least, not through this. âI am not feeling trapped in the trip.. but moreso, trapped in my life?â It was a lofty confession, one that she hadnât expected to come out.. especially not in front of her father, a man she no longer felt close to. Still, Rosie knew she could trust him with the admission more than anyone. The princess looked up at her father then, looking very much like the young and frightened girl she was.Â

At her tone, he frowned a bit and looked down at her with furrowed eyebrows. âAre youâŚwhatâs wrong, Rosie?â He asked. He knew that she did not like him as much as she did at one point, and that she felt like heâd betrayed her mother (which he had in a way) but he still hoped that if she was having such a problem, that she would tell him. He still wanted to help her. âI regret a great number of things,â He said after a minute, looking away from her. âAnd I often wish to return home, however it is something we cannot do now.â
âNothing, papa.â, she lied, not wanting to seem as petty and insolent as Victoire by airing their grievances to him.. and she certainly did not want to inform him about Eoin and their.. time together. Really, all matters that bothered Rosalie at this point in her life were better confessed to her mother or sister, yet Rosie didnât wish for her father and her to drift farther apart. âI may never return home now.. unless my future husband allows me.âÂ
prncealasdair:
He gave a hearty laugh at her joke and shook his curly red mane. âOh, Rosie. You should give up being a princess and become a boat builder.â He told her, glancing back at her as she brushed her face. âAye, they were right to say so. Iâve had my fair share of falls and head injuries. How do you feel now that you are on a horse, good?âÂ
âHey now!â, she chastised, lighting hitting his shoulder with her hand, âI could be any living thing I wanted. Even a boat builder. However, your brother would have to find another suitable bride for himself.â It was Rosalieâs turn to laugh, I donât quite see Tristan as the pretty husband of a crafts-woman.âÂ
The girl nodded before realizing that Alasdair could not see her, âAs good as I used to.. I was never really fond of horses.âÂ
prncealasdair:
âI offerâd, come on piuthar-chèile.â Alsadair offered her his hand as to help her on his mount. âWandering back to France?â He asked, giving a boyish grin as he went on. âI wouldnât blame ye. Iâm homesick as well.â
She smiled up at him, not mentioning the back that she hadnât the faintest idea of what heâd said, âWhy, yes actually. I was just about to knock down one of those there trees and carve out a boat.â Once upon the horse, Rosalie let out of a sigh of relief, âBy god, I havenât ridden a horse in weeks. They said it wasnât good for my head..â The girl brushed against her scar, now fully healed.Â
hm-charles-of-france:
He didnât miss the brief tension between them before Rosie seemed to at least give him the benefit of the doubt. Or, at least a small amount of it. Instead of mentioning it, he released his hold on her arm and instead folded his hands behind his back. âIâve been quite well. Worried, of course, but well. And yourself?â He asked, looking down at her. He hated that they had resorted to basic small talk; pleasantries that heâd employ with dignitaries that he cared little about. âIâve heard youâve been better than you were, at least.â
âIâve been.. better, honestly.â, Rosie answered, her answer revealing more to her father than she had in months. Still, she ached for the closeness with him that sheâd lost when began sleeping with Victoire. Deep down, Rosie just wanted her father back. âDo you ever regret bringing us here? To England?â, she asked then, âDespite it all.. things seemed so much simpler back home.âÂ
âAre ye quite alright? Ye look lost, I could give ye a lift, weâre pretty far from the castle..â
âNot lost just wandering..â, Rosalie answered her betrothedâs brother, âI suppose I could use a ride back to the Keep. If it isnât too much to ask of you?âÂ
irishkingeoin:
He gingerly stepped forward away from the banister as Rosie spoke, walking in front of her and faced the Princess. âI would agree, Your Highness. Itâs always a pleas-itâs always pleasing to see that others are doing wellâ He spoke, fumbling over his words still. He wished he could relax around her, not feeling like he was walking on glass the entire time. âHave you seen either of my sisterâs around? I found the most wonderful spot near the water front beside the mazeâs-âÂ
âNo, I have not.â, she answered, hoping that his last remark wasnât meant as an invitation. The Princess now knew better than to go anywhere with Eoin alone. âBut if I do see either of them, Iâll be sure to mention that you were looking.â She paused then, biting her lip to avoid saying anything she shouldnât. Already Rosie felt as if sheâd been standing too near him for too long.Â
