Even to this day, people keep calling Side Effects ‘noise music’. This is somewhat true considering its genres are EDM and Psychedelic Trance but that’s also why it’s not ‘noise music’. Its genre contributes to the lyrics and meaning of the song. How? The song title is literally “Side Effects” so that’s what this music is supposed to feel like: Uneasy, different, abnormal, disturbing even. Take a look at the lyrics, especially the chorus: "My head hurts" which's followed by the long list of side effects. (Side effects include: Nervousness, insomnia, nausea, agitation, anxiety, sweating, visual problems, psychosis, numbness, dizziness, headaches, weight loss) You see, the music is supposed to make you feel as if you have these effects too. Lyrics also depict a person who's feeling uneasy; someone who is changing (Why am I changing, more and more?), having conflicts within themselves and their surroundings (My inside and outside are changing). They are anxious and restless, to numb it -or reverse it- they are actually taking pills that give them false confidence which eventually makes things worse and gives them more side effects. (The side effects keep coming) And finally, their vision gets blurry and they hear an anxious sound. That's why the music is not noise music. It represents an abnormal trance state which is anxious and disturbing for the individual. All that ‘noise’ has a purpose in the overall composition of the song.
