Intro post (I figure it's a good idea since more than 2 people from ao3 have been sent here by me :) ): Hi I'm Florian, this account is about as active as my ao3, that is it comes in bouts of utter insanity!

I don't talk all that much about my writing unprompted but if you have questions don't hesitate to message me/send me an ask, I love talking about what gears spin in my brain!

i think something that is often lost in “aroace people can still date/have sex”/“being aroace is a spectrum” arguments when it comes to shipping aroace characters, and ryland grace specifically, is that, like, yeah! aroace people (and therefore characters) sometimes do want to date/have sex, and aroace experiences do lie on a spectrum. but is that true of this specific aroace character?

grace wasn’t declared aroace by word-of-god, either by andy weir or ryan gosling or anyone else involved in the movie’s production. he’s aroace because he’s portrayed in the novel as a character whose thoughts on sex and romance range from “uninterested” to “active dislike.” he’s aroace because his life and story reject amatonormativity in the same way that many aroace people’s lives do. he’s aroace because, in the film, he feels isolated when he sees people hooking up at a party, and states that he likes to “keep a wall up” in relationships. this is all subtext and coding, but it DOES give us a pretty good idea of whether ryland grace, specifically, would want to date or have sex - and the answer is “probably not”!

so like… yeah, sure. some aroace people do date and/or have sex, but based on the text, grace isn’t one of those aroace people. and sometimes aroace characters are declared to be aroace by writers/artists/performers even when their story does not demonstrate that/provide context by which to intuit how they, specifically, feel about dating or having sex - but grace isn’t one of those aroace characters, either. his existence as an aroace character is a conclusion drawn because he doesn’t really desire sex or romance, and because his happy ending involves neither, just like so many real aroace people. his place on the aroace spectrum, as far as we know, is that he’s fairly averse to both - so it can be disheartening when that element of his characterization is ignored for shipping purposes!

This isn't intrinsic to OPs point—which I agree with, even with somebody who is still a fan of sex-favourable Grace!—but a part of this conversation that I feel like also needs to be repeated again because it seems to keep getting lost is: even when you consider the option that an aroace character would like to take part in sex or romance, that experience is going to be vastly different than that of an allo person. I think especially when people decide to write demi identities it's important to remember that just because somebody is demi doesn't suddenly mean they're like an allosexual/alloromantic individual The Second they befriend somebody. They still have the lived experience of being on the ace/aro spectrum, it's still going to affect their thought process, and unless the story is from another POV that's not something you can ignore without the identity feeling like a cheap excuse to write sex but still have an ace character.

Grace never knowing a Rocky who hasn't been through 50 years of isolation and terror, slowly coming to realize when they get to Erid just how badly his friend has been doing all the time they were together because he had no baseline for what was healthy and what wasn't, kicking himself for not picking up on it earlier and grieving the version of Rocky that died with his crew.

Rocky never knowing a Grace who hasn't had all but the most necessary memories taken from him, slowly coming to realize that there are decades of his life missing that he has no way to get back, that there are massive blank spots where core tenements of his personality used to be, unable to help and unable to provide comfort because this situation is so unheard of, grieving the version of Grace who died in his coma.

Disabled people belong in the environmental sciences. Disabled people can and should be ecologists, zoologists, biologist, botanists, etc. There are ways to accommodate your disabilities. There are ways to do field work while disabled. It is good for the planet to have disabled people in environmental science, as their lived experiences create unique lenses to experience and analyze problems through. Disabled people are also disproportionately impacted by environmental changes. By studying and fighting for our planet, we are fighting for the other members of our community.

Eridian Grace, as in culturally Eridian, not the species Eridian, is so important to me.

Grace who does jazz hands and taps when he's asking a question and says some words three times like Rocky. Grace who makes chirps and trilling noises when he's happy.

Grace who starts thinking and dreaming in Eridian, who sometimes has dreams that are just sound, no visual. (Grace who, if he ever goes back to Earth for whatever reason after years on Erid, forgets some words in English and speaks in the sentence structure of Eridian because he has to translate from Eridian to English when he speaks outloud).

Grace who does scarification (even if Rocky protests at first) - I've read some fics where he does the Voyager pulsar map, or dots and lines showing his route from Sol, to Tau Ceti, turning around towards Sol, and then the line going all the way back to Erid. Even though he already has the scars from Rocky saving him, maybe Rocky's family crest. A scar showing his rank as Captain of the Hail Mary - maybe something to represent her, too.

Grace who wears Eridian gems, as earrings, in a chain for his glasses, in strings draped over him that clink together when he walks - the most important ones, like the earrings he wears all the time, the color of the blueish-green gems (or spots?) in/on Rocky's carapace.

Grace who wears a bracelet on each arm that have ribbed marks like on Rocky's arm so he can properly say goodbye (not something he had to do, but something that felt right to do, something that made him feel more like himself), sound included.

Grace who considers himself an Eridian!! Grace who IS an Eridian!!
