The Disposability of The Precarious Worker

When working with technology it’s wise to remember that Sod’s law takes presidence over the laws of physics

A video that has been rattling in my mind for months
Particularly at 1:25, where the letter by Gustav Flaubert talks about “[An Art] that should be held together by the internal strength of its style”
That is precisely where I am at right now

In semiosis, as in biology, wholes precede parts; similarity precedes difference … Thoughts and lives both begin as wholes—albeit ones that can be extremely vague and underspecified. A single-celled embryo, however simple and undifferentiated, is just as whole as the multicellular organism into which it will develop. … It is only in the realm of the machine that the differentiated part comes first and the assembled whole second. Semiosis and life, by contrast, begin whole.
Eduardo Kohn, How Forests Think
from a footnote:
Such a mechanistic logic is only possible because there is already a (whole) self outside the machine that designs or builds it.
“The ‘I think’ is the most general principle of representation - in other words, the source of these elements and of the unity of all these faculties: I conceive, I judge, I imagine, I remember and I perceive - as though these were the four branches of the Cogito. On precisely these branches, difference is crucified.”

ENOUGH
Pride parades are typically a time for celebration, but for one group of attendees at a parade in the Philippines this past weekend, they took the time to say sorry.
“Religion has often been used to put down the LGBT community. But at a pride parade this past weekend in Marikina, a city just east of the Philippines’ capital of Manila, a group of Christians gathered to say something different: I’m sorry.
Members of the Church of Freedom in Christ Ministries stood at the main entrance of the parade holding signs that offered apologies for how the LGBT community has been treated by Christians.Their banners read, “We’re here to apologize for the ways that we as Christians have harmed the LGBT community.”
Some of the signs had more personal sentiments. One man’s stated, “Can we hug you?"According to parade-goer Kohlin Lallabban, many took the group up on the offer.
Some church members made their own signs."It was so genuine and most of us got teary eyed when we saw them,” Lallabban said. The demonstration was part of the church’s “I’m Sorry” campaign, through which members seek to apologize on behalf of their fellow Christians for the way biblical writings have been used against the LGBT community. In a statement on its Facebook page, the church wrote, “We do not need the recognition of people but the heart-warming response of those who accepted our sincere apologies motivates and encourages us to continue doing this mission of our church.”

What is an Interlocteur?
Paulo Freire’s revolutionary text ‘Pedagogy of the Oppressed’ highlighted the necessity of dialogue in emancipating the oppressed from the structures imposed by the oppressors. Dialogue is the key to freedom, not just from macro-oppression (racism, sexism, poverty, etc.) not just from the systemic oppression that we see across states and nations, but from internalised, individual psychological oppression (mental health issues, guilt, shame, etc)
Friere discusses the ‘banking method’ of education. Where the teacher/student binary is defined by those ‘with’ knowledge and those ‘without.’ The problem with this binary is that it assumes that those ‘without’ knowledge actually have no knowledge. This is incorrect, as those who do not fit in; those who are othered, who have opposing ideas, who are without the language to fight their corner, already have knowledge. The problem is that the teacher within the ‘banking method’ have to assume that the knowledge that they have is greater, or better, than the students. Therefore, it is the teachers job to shape the students into being better people, by making them adaptable to society and the knowledge that they impart.
The solution to this problem is to throw away the assumption that some people ‘have’ and some people ‘have not’, and recognise that everyone is human. We all carry our own stories which have been written since the moment we were born. Our value is not tied to the things we have amassed but to our basic nature as humans. We are all valuable and should be valued. To value these stories, we must listen and we must share.
An interlocuteur is one who speaks but speaking is much more than just making sounds with your mouth. It is giving, it is gestures, it is offering a part of yourself to your fellow humans to build a connection. The role of the interlocteur is as integral to our newly flourishing society as a doctor or a mayor was to the old. The interlocteur channels conversations, brings out the stories from the people and helps them see their own worth and value.
Thoughts: on learning
The first 9 months of my MFA has been made more difficult because of my imposter syndrome. If I had figured out earlier on that I deserve to be there, that I am good at things that others are not good at, and that’s my strength, then I could have achieved so much more. It’s not a teachers job to figure out the barriers in your brain to learning... but it should be.
A teacher should be both psychiatrist and facilitator, but never the boss
Dog Shit on The Path of Life
Walking Tweed this morning, I’m looking at the azure sky blasting through the trees branches and leaves behind the Linkie. Farm fields to my right, buzzing woodland to my left... smoosh.
I tread in a big soft dog shit in the middle of the path. Fuck.
Why would someone leave their dogs shit right where people walk. Fair enough if yer Dug shat in the grass, but the path, which has been worn down into the ground by human interaction? No. The path is evidence of other people’s activity. You KNOW people walk there because there wouldn’t be a path of they didn’t.
Some people like to leave there shit right where it can effect others. In the middle of their path. It forces us to look at the dirt instead of being amazed by the sky... just in case.
