An idea

I recently have been watching paleontology videos on youtube exploring the earliest forms of life on earth, as well as several videos on the microscopic world. These videos have given me an idea for a sci-fi story.

The story would follow the crew of a deep space explorer, one of humanities first interstellar starships, as it discovered life on a distant alien world. A world full of new and odd lifeforms with strange biology. For much of the story only simple life forms would be discovered, but towards the end of the series the ship would uncover evidence of more advances life.

Most of the series would detail these lifeforms, their physiology, biology, and anatomy. Generally exploring a realistic form of alien life, rather than the more typical aliens we see in sci-fi.

Tough little ship.

The colonial fleet came to rely on the sturdy Manticore class early in the first Cylon war to fill the roles of escort, scout, screen unit, and strike ship. The capable little vessel was built in large numbers and served with distinction.

The ships did not carry the most firepower of any ship during the colonial fleet. But they were sturdy and very capable against opponents of their size. And when utilized in concert they could take on opponents much larger than themselves.

Rapid Response

The New Orleans class USS Quetzaltenango arrives to the rescue of the merchant ship SS Aesculus which had suffered a reactor failure some hours prior and was drifting without main power. Her 2100 passengers getting desperate as the lights began to flicker.

Quetzaltenango would send an engineering team over to the Aesculus and restore power after some efforts. Then escorting the ship to nearby starbase 16 where the liner disembarked her passengers and began lengthy repairs to her worn engines. For her efforts Quetzaltenango received the thanks of those she rescued, and a commendation from the commandant of starbase 16.

USS Hamilton NCC-1894 (Deep dive) Commissioned in 2289 the Hamilton was a member of the block II Miranda class. The vessel was a light cruiser upon commissioning, and was assigned initially to the 72nd cruiser squadron as a part of the fourth fleet. Assigned to the Klingon border and based out of starbase 19. It was while on patrol in 2293 that Hamilton would make one of the first confirmed reports of the destruction of the Klingon moon Praxis. The ship later faced off against Klingon warships along the border until the first Khitomer conference resulted in a deescalation of tensions between the two powers. Hamilton was decommissioned in 2296 for a period of six years in compliance with the Khitomer treaties. She was refit over a six month period and returned to service in 2305 for an extended mission exploring the Ainxou sector, a region far in the federation's corewards frontier. This mission completed in 2317 and Hamilton was again decommissioned. The ship was again refit between 2326-2329, entering service again in the new pattern 2325 frigate pattern. The ship then served within the federation after this for the majority of the 2330s. Participating in many anti-piracy operations. Hamilton's greatest moment occured during the border wars with the Cardassian union in 2347. She was engaged over the planet Setlik III during the initial union attack. She was last seen fending off overwhelming Cardassian forces. Sacrificing herself in an attempt to save the colonists below.

Promotional image for the Koendayr manufacturing BTL-Y wing fighter/bomber. Developed for use by the Republic Judiciary forces, and first flying in 28 BBY the Ywing was intended as a long range fighter for use in the galactic rim. The type proved popular during the clone Wars, used both by the Grand Army and militia forces. Who where often lacking in more modern types and appreciated the Ywings versatility and tough frame. Quickly discarded by the new Galactic empire the fighter remained in service with many sector and planetary forces, and would later see substantial use by the Alliance to restore the Republic. By which point they were hopelessly worn out and outclassed by more modern types.

Description The Intrepid class was developed as a replacement for the troublesome Cheyenne class cruiser. Like the latter vessel Intrepid was intended as a fast scout and patrol ship for the fleet, but using the most advanced technology available at the time and a more traditional hull layout than the four nacelled Cheyenne. When initially commissioned in 2370 USS Intrepid was the most advanced, and fastest vessel in the fleet. Incorporating numerous new and experimental technologies which were tested aboard the class before being introduced into the entire fleet. The ship also incorporated a nacelle arrangement which meant subspace was not disrupted while the ship traveled at warp. In service the Intrepid served well, though the expense of the class and its complicated design kept out from entering widespread service in numbers initially intended. During the Dominion war the ships often served in diplomatic and support roles behind the front lines. Easily the most famous member of the class is the USS Voyager which became trapped in the Delta quadrant in 2371 and made an arduous return voyage to Federation space over several years. Empire day celebrations, 2 ABY Begun early on empire day was celebrated on the anniversary of emperor Palpatine's declaration of the new order. While early celebrations focused on a message of peace and prosperity this would change to a more militarily focused one in later years. Showing the power and might of the empires armed forces. By the time of empire day 2 ABY this trend was in full display as across the empire cities witnessed fly overs of imperial warships and parades of imperial troops throughout their streets. Pictured is the fleet review over the planet Tion, where the 342nd battle group conducted operations over the planet. Just over a month later the 342nd would be engaged by forces of the Rebel Alliance in a string of brutal skirmishes throughout the sector.

Unnamed D7 cruisers pictured in Federation space circa 2254. While precise dates cannot be nailed down it is likely the D7 began its development late in the four years war as a replacement for the D5 and D6 cruisers which then made up the bulk of Imperial task forces. Likewise it cannot be known for certain when the first D7 entered service, though 2250 is an often cited date. What is known for sure about the vessel however is that it first became known to starfleet in the Xian incident of 2254 when a pair of the new class, pictured above, penetrated Federation space along the border and made several sensor sweeps of the Xian system before they were met and escorted out of the system by USS Holmes NCC-1227. The captains of the two new Klingon ships apologizing and claiming sensor malfunctions, though it was obvious the move was a deliberate probe of Starfleets defenses. The existence of this new and powerful class sent shockwaves through starfleet and led to immediate efforts to upgun the then building Constitution class heavy cruisers as a precautionary measure. However it was soon judged the new ships would be more than capable of matching the D7 in any likely combat scenario. An enduring symbol of the UFP-Klingon cold war of the late 23rd century the D7 remained in production until 2274 at the latest, seeing over one hundred vessels built and remaining in service well into the 2290s before it was gradually phased out.

Description The Harrower was a class of capital ship produced in many variations over an extended period by the Sith Empire and often seen engaging Republic vessels during the myriad of wars between the Sith and Republic in the period 4500-3500 BBY. Among the first vessels to utilize a wedge design primary hull so as to maximize the firepower in the forward arcs the Harrower was initially lethal in combat. Combining the roles of battleship and carrier with large hangars available to carry fighters and bombers. The ships design did not directly influence later vessels of the Republic or Imperial navies, but rather similarities are a result of convergent evolution as both navies were facing similar problems with their designs.

USS Takao conducts a flyby if a Cardassian Galor class along the border, 2372. In the build up to the Dominion war Cardassian vessels began to probe the Federations border defenses to find potential weak points, colonies and listening outposts were attacked and civilian shipping was raided, culminating with the destruction of the SS Heart of Oak, which the Cardassian union claimed entered their space but whose own distress call and wreckage were located well within Federation territory. In response starfleet deployed the 72nd cruiser squadron consisting of brand new Akira class ships to beef up defenses along weak points on the border. These vessels immediately found themselves regularly engaging first Cardassian, and then Dominion vessels across the border. Takao would be among the first casualties starfleet suffered in the Dominion war, the ship being destroyed when a Dominion task force struck the colony of Sayshasa. The ship was destroyed in a delaying action trying to buy time for evacuation efforts to rescue everyone they possibly could.

YT 1200 freighters predated the iconic YT 1300 by almost a decade. Although it failed to achieve the market sales of its successor for its time the YT 1200 and YT 1250 series of light freighters were considered a major success for CEC. Produced before the Naboo crisis, and continuing in production under various smaller yards under license until well into the imperial era over one hundred thousand ships are estimated to have been built. The vessel remained a common sight throughout the Galaxy for decades after its introduction, often in a heavily modified state. With some mechanics even offering refit packets which brought the ship more in line with the YT 1300 in appearance and performance.

New Republic E-wing fighter pictured in an official news release, circa 17 ABY. Following the victory of the Alliance to restore the Republic over the Galactic empire at the battle of Endor alliance, now New Republic, personnel began work on a new fighter series to standardize around. The new fighter flew first in 9ABY, but major issues establishing production lines, and ongoing conflict against imperial remnant forces delayed the crafts introduction into widespread service for years. The issues with entering full production, as well as the high cost and frequent maintenance requirements of the E-wing meant that it served much of its life alongside the very types it was meant to replace. Namely the X-wing and A-wing fighters. Ignoring these issues the E-wing was a capable and deadly craft, superior to anything else in the New Republics starfighter corps when introduced and enjoying superiority over most imperial types for over a decade. A favorite of its pilots the craft enjoyed a reputation for being able to take damage and keep flying, assuming a regular maintenance cycle was maintained by ground crews.

USS Anand (Deep dive) Named for the Indian author Mulk Raj Anand of the 20th century USS Anand commissioned into the fleet in 2294, participating in relief efforts in the Klingon empire following the explosion of the moon Praxis. These efforts lasted until 2298, afterwards the ship undertook a cadet training cruise in Vulcan space, completing this in 2300 the ship was then in refit until 2305. The ship next participated in extensive tactical exercises near starbase 5 which took up three years from 2306-2309 and resulted in significant reforms to starfleets tactical doctrine which held until the border wars with the Cardassian union. During these exercises Anand distinguished herself for her accurate firing and prompt maneuvering while in formation. Despite her good marks for her tactical proficiency Anand spent the 2310s and 20s largely in scientific, diplomatic and colonial support missions. The early 24th century being a time of unprecedented peace and stability for the Federation there was precious little for the ship to do combat wise. It would not be until 2346 that the ship would first fire her guns in anger, a full fifty two years after she first entered service. The vessel was engaged by a flight of Cardassian Elkoor class vessels while patrolling the federation-cardassian border. However after this initial bout the ship played very little roles in the successive border wars with the union. Anand spent much of the 2350s on police and law enforcement missions within Federation space, running missions from one starbase to another and generally continuing in the peacetime missions which had till this point typified her career. Sadly the Anand would become a victim of the brief Klingon-Federation war, being destroyed when ambushed by a pair of Klingon K'tinga class cruisers. However the ship would take one of her attackers down with her.

In this exercise the 58th were successful, surprising the defenders and forcing them to flee with heavy casualties while sustaining no serious damage. Oddly enough in 2268 USS Hornet would find herself the victim of a similar attack by Klingons in the border system of Ok for, where two D7 cruisers and a C9 light cruiser attacked the ship and attempted to claim the system for the Klingon empire. Although she took 70% casualties Hornet managed to hold the system until reinforcements could arrive and relieve her.

Description The Keldon class cruiser is a derivative of the Galor class cruiser in service with the Cardassian union which fills the role of a heavy hitting strike cruiser. The ship began development in the 2260s as a means of increasing the firepower in their formations in response to starfleets introduction of more modern cruisers. However the design entered service to late to see service in the border wars with the federation. The vessel was initially intended too be used by the Cardassian fleet, but many members of the class would instead be used by the obsidian order. With many lost in an ill fated attack on the dominion homeworld. During the dominion war the Keldon often served as a flagship of Galor wings, or in some cases, heavy squadrons entirely of Keldon colas ships. Naturally the ships were the prime targets of allied attacks during the war, and suffered very high losses. Post war very few ships have survived, and have been handed over to allied commissions.

USS Galaxy leads the charge in the climactic battle of Cardassia, the wars final and most lethal battle. Galaxy had served as a flagship throughout the war, and taken part in many of the wars most pivotal battles, often as a flagship for her division.

Excelsior- excellence in motion

Confession, when I first saw the Excelsior I didn't like it, which was natural I suppose. The ship wasnt portrayed very flatteringly in the first film it was in. A big expensive dud is what it seemed.

However the design grew on me the more I saw it. By later tng it had become one of my favorite designs. Much the same thing happens to me with alot of ships. Enterprise D is a good example, I thought the ship looked fat at first, but later I came to see it as graceful and even elegant. I have noticed that the longer I see a ship the more I tend to like it.

Has that happened to any of you? Was there a ship design you hated at first, but later grew on you to become one of your favorite designs? Any ships you genuinely don't like even after several years?
