Ethics And Future Of Fashion Work
For this lesson I worked in groups with:
We were informed to create three posters. One on the Importance of Sustainable Fashion, the second one on Technology in the fashion world and the third one on the Metaverse.
Sustainable Fashion: Is the creation and consumption of fashion which is positively beneficial for the world. This could entail using eco-friendly materials and fabrics, reducing the usage of water, ensuring labour is not in use and workers are payed fairly and making sure everything is animal friendly.
Technology: Is the usage and merging of fashion and digital tech. This could entail digital printing and AI usage of designs. This has recently become popular since 2020- Technology is always becoming more advanced.
MetaVerse: Is the creation of a virtual world where many people can create, trade and wear digital designs and clothing.
In my opinion, I really loved this lesson because I really enjoy and adore learning about anything sustainable and to do with the world/environment. Perhaps this is because as humans we benefit from this beautiful earth as a whole?
I think overall learning about the Ethics and Future of fashion in this lesson, was very interesting and reliable as I got to understand the ways of sustainable fashion, the ways of how large companies may make their clothing and how the future of fashion is changing and becoming more digitally invested.
Cultural Appropriation and Appreciation Posters
For this piece of work, I was instructed to make two posters: An appropriation poster and an Appreciation poster. For this lesson, I got to learn the differences between the two which improved my knowledge and understanding of the differences.
Appropriation: The unacknowledged or deliberately inappropriate act of a dominant culture taking something of another culture without regard of it's original context or meaning.
Appreciation: The respectful and understanding of the history and significance behind traditions and traditional practices. This would include not just following trends.
Examples: "Julianne Hough wearing blackface as part of her Halloween costume" - This is an example of culture appropriation because it's insulting, hurtful and derogatory.
" Rihanna at the Met Gala 2015" - This an example of culture appreciation because she credits the culture and the designer of the garment.
Overall, I feel like this lesson was good and knowledgeable as I got to learn and understand the many different cultures and the differences between Culture Appropriation and Culture Appreciation.
Clown Core Poster: Trickle-Up Theory and Trickle-Down Theory
Clown Core (also known as CircusCore) is a 'newish' aesthetic that become popular from 2020 to 2023. It drives from using bright colours, funky patterns and quirky symbols. This often portrays happiness and childhood nostaliga into fashion. Did you know that motifs of clown have been around since ancient egyptian times? Clown core is a trickle-up fashion trend which means big brands such as Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood have took inspiration from social media (Tiktok).
Trickle-Up Theory: Is the presumption that a fashion trend started among the young or lower-class income groups which then travelled and influenced the older or higher-income groups.
Trickle-Down Theory: Is the presumption that a fashion trend started among the higher-income or big fashion leaders which then moved down to fashion followers and trend enthusiasts.
From the images above you can see, I have been instructed to make a poster on a chosen aesthetic and I chose to do Clown Core. I chose to do this, as I loved the brightness and funkiness of the aesthetic. I also loved how people in the world are so creative with makeup that they are able to create fashion into art. From above, I have created an outfit I would wear based on this aesthetic using the app shoplook. I loved how this came out and how it potrays me as a person- Quirky and Creative!
Clown Core does have another side to it- some people prefer to take fashion inspiration from horror. Here are some examples:
Overall, I really loved learning about the different trickle theories and the history and facts on Clowncore as it increased my depth and knowledge on this aesthetic and the business terms in the fashion industry as a whole.
Styled T-Shirt looks and Shop looks
Today we did our first ever styling project in class!
-In my group we first chose out a theme at random. We got the theme “High-flyer business person”. After we had chose our theme, we began to think as a group about how our customer would look and be styled. We then went around in the room to collect certain pieces of clothing to begin creating 3 different looks from those chosen pieces. When the time came to the end, we then had to present one of our accomplished styled garments based on our theme. Overall, I found this activity fun and exciting as me and my group were able to communicate well to complete a beautiful styled design.
-For our second activity, we had to work independently to create our own customer profile for our chosen past theme, from the first activity. I decided to go with an aloof, hard-working and determined CEO who is so passionate about work that he rarely has time for anyone other than himself and his company. I felt like my customer profile board was able to create the image and story of the man I had in mind. We then went onto creating 3 different outfits on the app Shop Look based on the themes “Day Look” “Evening Look” and “Special Occasion/Event Look” whilst using a black or white t-shirt as the base of the outfit. I found this activity enjoyable as I loved going on the app to create digital outfits.
Market Level Presentation
Today we created a Market Level Presentation in groups based around all of the different Market Levels: Haute Couture, Ready-To-Wear, Upper High street, High Street and Lower High Street. We then got to choose which two Market Levels we were going to work on and I chose High street and Lower high street retail shops.
High street retail shops are typically located on main streets and are the shops which range from fast-fashion to luxury. These shops usually sell items at a higher price (around £20-£200).
Examples of High street retail shops are: Zara, H&M, Bershka and New Look.
Lower street retail shops are typically those mainstream and affordable. These shops are often engaging in fast-fashion- causing them to be cheap and come at a lower price.
Examples of Lower street retail shops are: Shein, Temu, Primark and Boohoo.
Overall, I think me and my group did an amazing job to represent and study each Market Level while jotting down each factual information of the Levels we searched the internet for onto the presentation. I think researching made our presentation come out great!
A new speciality shop has landed in York city centre selling headwear.
Offering quality British menswear in the heart of York, Clarksons of York offers a contemporary edge to traditional British fashion.
We're Mind, the mental health charity. We're here to make sure no one has to face a mental health problem alone.
YORK RETAIL SHOPS RETAIL REPORT
-Today I created a presentation retail report based off of 3 different stores I visited during my day trip to York with my group. I first went to Diltane Hatters, This store is a whimsical place filled with hats and scarfs of all sorts. While they do have a more traditional feeling to their products, anyone with a unique, creative and wacky sort of style could make these look good on them. I then travelled along York's streets and found Clarksons. Unknown to my knowledge, I was able to learn the history of Clarksons which enlightened me and made me understand how this store became located on the oldest streets of York. I absolutely loved the friendliness of this place as the owner/staff were incredibly nice. Finally, I went to The mind Shop which was a small, cozy and little charity shop. I picked to visit a charity shop last as I went to high street stores before this. I think the organisation/community The Mind is creating is wonderful as they are helping and serving people with poor mental health.
A fashion Job Research Presentation
-For this piece of work, I was instructed to make a presentation based on different jobs linking to the fashion industry. I decided to pick Fashion designers, Illustrators, Bloggers and Models. This is because these are my personal favourite jobs of the fashion industry/ world.
A career I would like to pursue in the future, would definitely be a fashion designer or a model. I have always loved fashion and everything to do with the fashion world. So one day, if I was able to meet my full potential and design/create my own collections and garments, it would be great!
Overall, I feel like this presentation came out fabulous as I decided to use pictures and videos in the pages to make it less written heavy. I also love how I personally researched each job to correctly get the points and facts down.
French Connections Group Work- Retail Report
-For today's lesson, we had to create a retail report based on companies/ brands we picked at random in a group. In my group, we got the beautiful brand French Connections. This brand is a UK-based global brand founded in 1972 by Stephen Marks to sell shirts he acquired through a French contact.
Recently in Australia, French Connections did actually rebrand in 2023 to Unison. This is because, of the 1990s "FCUK" movement which led to controversies and a decline in multiple sales. Although this did happen in Australia, In the United Kingdom, French Connections brought back the "FCUK" logo in 2016 for a nostalgic feel of the brand. This clearly shows how the same brands may work and differentiate in other regions of the world.
When researching and looking into this brand, from my perspective, French Connections consists of an elegantly chic style which any age range and gender loves.
Overall, I feel like as a group, we did a good job at capturing the essence and information known on French Connections. We also got to induce our knowledge and learn about this brand!
My Cover Letter
-This is my Cover Letter for the work experience I’ll be expected to do for my studies. I was instructed to make this so that once I find work experience I'll be able to hand the employers this.
What is a cover letter?
A cover letter is a one page piece of information sent with a CV to introduce yourself as a character/ person with interest of that specific job. This gives employers an idea of you and your dedication to the role.
When making up my Cover Letter, I made sure to be formal and polite as I want to seem professional and show my respect towards the person reading the page. I decided to make the left side of my cover Letter pink to add character and show my love for all colours especially the colour pink. This makes my page specifically unique and special.
My CV
-This is my Fashion specific CV that I’ll be needing to use for work experience for my studies. I was instructed to make this so that when I find my work experience place, I will be able to give them ( the employers) this.
What is a CV?
A CV is an elaborate and detailed piece of document of a person's academic and professional past/ history to apply to jobs and other opportunities such as: Work Experience or Apprenticeships.
On my CV I have decided to add my social media account. This is so that whoever my employer is, they can have a look at the work I have been doing and completing in class. This could also give them an idea of my skills and knowledge of the fashion industry. I have written a short summary on me so that whoever will be reading my CV will have a good idea on me as a person. I also decided to make the top of my CV pink to make it more me- unique and special.
