ok because like. ok this is probably embarrassing for me to post bc i have no vidding skills myself but the BEST fanvids are truly Transformative Works in every sense of a word like while they do not speak a word of "analysis" in the conventional sense (like textposts explicitly breaking moments and scenes and themes down) they actually ARE hyperanalytical works like you take a song and you're like I am going to recontextualise this within [the self-hatred that forbids dean from speaking his capacity for love] [the inherent tragedy of the godstiel arc] [the self-referential madness of heaven and the angelic family] [insert theme here] AND you take clips from this terrible cw show and you're like Okay i'm gonna recontextualise these clips within this song. like good vidding is PRODUCTIVE ANALYSIS it brings two texts into conversation (more than two if you consider spn itself as like a complex overlaid multitext imo) and says Okay you know what i am going to produce a synthesis!!!!!!!
e.g. ok let's say you're tumblr user jurisffiction and you're like I am going to bring taylor swift gold rush and destiel into conversation and IN DOING SO i will bring both texts more meaning. the line "i don't like that anyone would die to feel your touch" is overlaid with these scenes of dean touching cas but ONLY in moments of violence, hitting him or stabbing him or pushing him against the wall, and so that line becomes rewritten as "I WOULD die to feel your touch, without question, and i hate that i feel that way, and i hate that so many others feel the same way and there is so much competition for the simple dignity of being touched by your hand" and that reinterpretation is like. understood by both the viewer and the vidder without that interpretation being explicitly spoken or written or said. idk i think it's in the introduction to anti-fandom: dislike and hate in the digital age that melissa click makes the distinction betweet transformative fandom (which engages in transformative works like vidding, fanfic, meta writing, etc) and affirmative fandom which by and large just like affirms or rejects the authorial interpretations of characters and the story and engages in the narrative at face value (think like straight men who watch game of thrones) and like!!!!!! WOW what is even the POINT of affirmative fandom when some of the most talented people on the internet are out here doing THEORY from that which they love
anyways some of my favourite vids along these line are spn angels: runs in the family and @jurisffiction's destiel: gold rush and @markantxny's godstiel: oh ana and @katebushstandean's destiel: strawberry blond because WOW. wow
