My reread of the comic has been brought to an absolute standstill for several weeks because I’m up to the dancestors and I simply don’t have the strength to face them. And like yes I could just skip those parts but every completionist bone in my body will vibrate into dust if I do that.

Dipping my toe very very cautiously into the Trans Egbert waters, in part because of some Good Tags that I saw vis a vis the thematic consistency of a nonbinary Egbert, which is an idea I've had rolling around for a hot minute and now that I’ve seen someone else say it I gotta talk about it more.

First off, I really like the idea of an Egbert gender experience driven by and centering baffled euphoria rather than suppressed dysphoria. One J Egbert, and their wide-eyed exploration of previously unknown options.

At first, they just don’t think about gender. Not in a repression way, just in a “no thoughts, head empty” way. It’s the path of least resistance, and until a point, the only path they ever thought existed. And then they find out there are people who think Really Hard about gender. And now they do have Thoughts; curious, puzzled thoughts which beget questions which lead to answers which lead to more Thoughts.

And as they learn I feel like J would find the breadth of identities people subscribe to compelling, but also overwhelming. And eventually, frustrating—that despite having a venerable encyclopedia of queer vocabulary available, the feeling in their chest that bubbled up when they first realized “wait, you can do that??” refuses to resolve into something that neatly slots into the constraints of any combination of labels they’ve encountered.

Eventually (look out folks here comes the projection) I think they decide they’re sick of thinking so hard about it. They return to the path of least resistance, but now empowered with the knowledge that they’re doing it on purpose, and armed to the teeth with joke fodder. Full “my gender is whatever makes the joke funniest” mode.

Paleontology is very rarely offered as a full undergraduate degree, rather it’ll be a component of a broader geology major. And I very much see Dave as one of those undeclared students who’s trying to figure out how the fuck to fill out his schedule, and after perhaps being subjected to some wry remarks about “harkening back to one’s childhood passions,” reads the course description for Geology 101.

There's a passing mention of trilobites. It fits with his other classes. Problem solved.

By the end of term his classmates have complied a hefty google doc of Striderian mnemonics, which are a hearty mix of “incredibly catchy and helpful” and “incomprehensible to any outsider to the point of actually making it harder to remember the information”

Also absolutely crucial to this is the knowledge that there are, hand to god, minerals named dickite and cummingtonite.

having vriska the thief’s core emotional journey be about forgiveness (forgiving the self and desperately seeking forgiveness) is so beautiful because, despite vriska’s efforts and beliefs to the contrary, it’s something that CANT be taken no matter what. like it doesn’t matter whether the reader thinks vriska “deserved” forgiveness because forgiveness can’t be earned, only freely given. what matters and the point of it all is that terezi forgives her, not because of anything vriska did to prove herself or win back favor but because terezi loved her enough to want to forgive her.
